Luke was still wearing the clothes he had before crossing over. The setting of Era was a world where steam, Magic, machinery, alchemy, and supernatural powers coexisted, with an anime-game fashion style modeled after modern Europe.
The woman before him was Shelley, codenamed Black Mamba. With a "one hundred percent" case-solving rate in Cape District of Raging Wave City, she was extremely popular among Players.
It would not be an exaggeration to say so.
Cape District had become the most chaotic district in Raging Wave City. Besides being a gathering place for the city's lower-class residents, Shelley's distinctive investigative methods had also contributed greatly.
The Shelley before him was not dressed very differently from the one in the game.
She wore a black strapless crop top and a brown leather jacket whose buttons could not fasten because a certain part of her was too large.
She had on tight leather shorts. A black thigh strap circled her pale left leg, with a holster tied to its side.
Lower still, the blade attached to the heel of her leather boot reflected a cold glint that stung Luke's eyes.
Luke looked at Shelley and asked, "What's today's date?"
"April 24th, Century Calendar 2647."
The day Era Game began. It looked like some of the guides might come in handy.
"I'm the newly appointed Detective Chief of your Cape District Secret Intelligence Bureau Branch."
"Are you screwing with me?" Shelley extended her leg a little farther forward. "Kid! Even lies need to sound believable. What you just said, I'm afraid not even Pisco would believe."
Unexpectedly, Pisco beside her said, "Sis! Our Detective Chief died in the line of duty last month. Headquarters said they would send us another Detective Chief.
He knows so much about you and me. He might really be our Detective Chief."
"Shut up, Pisco." Shelley stopped her pig-headed teammate. "I know headquarters is sending us a new Detective Chief, but there's no way it would be this... this pathetic excuse for a man. I bet he wouldn't survive three days alone in Cape District."
Shelley turned to Luke and asked, "I'll give you one last chance. Talk! Who exactly are you?"
"I'm your new Detective Chief."
Killing intent appeared in Shelley's eyes, and the blade beneath her shoe pressed closer.
"My patience is limited... You don't have any letter of appointment on you at all."
Luke stared at Shelley. "Of course I have a letter of appointment. You just don't know how to read it. Untie me."
Luke's response made Shelley somewhat uncertain.
"Where is the letter of appointment? I'll get it."
"Untie me first... You're not afraid a pathetic man like me will escape from here, are you?"
Shelley considered it for a moment, withdrew her leg, then gestured to Pisco.
Pisco immediately untied the ropes binding Luke and removed his handcuffs.
Luke flexed his wrists and said, "Give me all my things."
After receiving Shelley's nod, Pisco went out and returned with an evidence bag, handing it to Luke.
Luke opened the evidence bag.
His keys, phone, and several cards were all inside.
Luke took out his phone.
Shelley asked warily, "What is that? It seems to be a Magic item. I tried opening it, but it requires some kind of password."
"This is an experimental alchemical device newly developed by the Imperial Scientific Alchemy Engineering Bureau. No one but me can open it. You wouldn't understand even if I explained."
Luke unlocked the phone with his fingerprint, then searched through the video collection.
"Here. See for yourselves."
Shelley and Pisco leaned in to look at the phone screen.
When a woman appeared on the screen, Shelley shot up from her chair.
She stood at attention in a standard military posture.
"Greetings, Your Highness the Grand Princess!"
Agatha, the Grand Princess of the Golden Shield Empire, was a legendary woman who possessed beauty, courage, and wisdom. She was ruthless and decisive in her actions, wielded authority with a firm hand, and possessed an unyielding character and the bearing of a monarch.
Her exceptional abilities allowed Grand Princess Agatha to hold several posts, one of which was overseeing the Imperial Secret Intelligence Bureau. She was Shelley's highest-ranking superior.
Therefore, when the Grand Princess appeared on the screen, Shelley did not dare show the slightest disrespect.
She stood respectfully, waiting for the Grand Princess's reprimand.
Though Pisco had never met the Grand Princess, seeing Shelley's reaction, he too stood at attention.
"Greetings, Your Highness the Grand Princess!"
Yet what made Shelley and Pisco's eyes nearly pop out was...
The Grand Princess Agatha on the screen actually said tenderly, "You... you're leaving tomorrow?
It must be very dangerous there... I-I'm worried about you, but I believe in you. With your abilities, there is nothing in this world you cannot accomplish.
I'll miss you. I'll miss you every day.
Tonight... can't you stay... I want to look at you... because I don't know when we'll see each other again..."
Luke put away his phone and said to the two people who had already gone dumb, "What happens next isn't something you two can watch."
Era had perfectly grasped the tastes of XP enthusiasts. Its storyline was packed with finely produced interactive CG animations, teasing Players into digging ever deeper into the plot.
Moreover, as affection levels kept rising, the boundaries could be pushed further and further along the edge of the line.
As an Era content creator, Luke had stored an enormous number of CGs and guides on his phone for the sake of making videos.
Forget spending a night with your Grand Princess.
I even have CGs of spending a night with your Empress.
Seeing Shelley and Pisco's expressions, Luke knew these two so-called geniuses of the Cape District Secret Intelligence Bureau had been bluffed by him.
Their mouths hung open for ages without a word coming out. Judging by their expressions... their heads were probably buzzing.
At that moment, a prompt suddenly appeared in Luke's mind.
[Charge the phone?]
Luke looked at the phone's battery level... 57%.
It was time to charge it.
But how was he supposed to charge it?
Luke could only try answering in his mind, "Charge."
The phone instantly vanished from Luke's hand, and at the same time, its interface appeared in his consciousness.
An icon displayed: [Charging]
The phone's disappearance from Luke's hand finally jolted Shelley out of her buzzing stupor.
"That person just now... really, really was Her Highness the Grand Princess."
Luke crossed one leg over the other.
"Shelley, you've met Her Highness the Grand Princess. You should know very well whether it was real."
Of course Shelley knew.
The person she had just seen was indeed Grand Princess Agatha, and the location had been inside the Grand Princess's bedchamber.
But how could Her Highness the Grand Princess, always so stern and self-disciplined, say such things... How could she make such an expression?
Her image had completely collapsed!
More importantly, who had the Grand Princess been saying those sweet words to?
Shelley could not help examining the man before her.
He... he slept with Her Highness the Grand Princess!
