Geography and Resources

• The Land of Wind is a vast nation in the west of the Shinobi World. Before its climate changed, most of its territory was desert, and settlements depended on oases or underground rivers 528 560 572.
• Its widely separated towns served as homes, resource hubs, and transportation junctions. Travel through unsettled desert was difficult even for locals familiar with the terrain 560.
• Mountain ranges in the neighboring Land of Rivers blocked moisture-bearing air currents, contributing to the Land of Wind’s long drought. The country has gold reserves and gold-mine output, but suffered severe food shortages during Konoha’s blockade 451 466 567.

History

War, blockade, and territorial loss

Sand and Rock forces joined the invasion of the Land of Whirlpools, operating together in its southern war zone. The distant Land of Wind could not maintain its own sea supply line, so the invading forces relied on plundering local resources 104.

During the later war against Konoha and Amegakure, drought and Konoha’s economic blockade put the Land of Wind at risk of famine. Sunagakure arranged grain purchases from Kirigakure, but the route through the Land of Bears collapsed when Hoshigakure seized ships and supplies. Air raids, disrupted production, and falling military morale deepened the crisis 451 452 453 455.

Nawaki subsequently invaded with the airborne Tianxing Fortress. Its ability to bypass desert guerrillas and strike settlements built around water sources undermined Sunagakure’s defenses. After the Third Kazekage was captured, the Land of Wind conceded defeat 560 566 567. The peace terms required it to sever ties with Uchiha Madara and cede territory near the Land of Rain and Land of Rivers. Sunagakure retained the One-Tail under an annual lease arrangement 567.

Climate change and renewed conflict

Nawaki later opened two enormous passages through the Land of Rivers’ mountains. Rain-bearing air reached the Land of Wind, bringing its first rainfall in years; the initial downpours lasted half a month and became hazardous themselves. Although the climate normalized, restoring the long-established desert would still require decades of planting and other work 572 573 574.

In a subsequent war, Konoha occupied parts of the Land of Wind but initially struggled against Sunagakure guerrillas supported by hostile civilians. Public opinion shifted after revelations about the Third Kazekage’s assassination, allowing Konoha to consolidate its gains. The Daimyo government then demanded that Sunagakure end the war 675 680 681.

Kirigakure later invaded the weakened country, devastating settlements along its advance 801 828 866. After Konoha captured Sunagakure, the Land of Wind’s Daimyo agreed to a one-country, two-village system: Pakura would lead the new Wind Ninja Village alongside Sunagakure 914 915. Wind Ninja Village joined the Konoha Alliance as an affiliated village. Sunagakure formally recognized it, and the new village was established on the southern coast with support from local residents, the Daimyo government, and Konoha 915 917.
