Background / History

Sunagakure fought Konoha and Amegakure in the Land of Rain while suffering from the Land of Wind's drought, food shortages, and low troop morale. Its leadership considered changing the terrain of the Land of Rivers to address its water and food crisis, but judged the undertaking impossible. Chiyo proposed trade with Konoha, while Ebizo warned that Konoha was exploiting Sunagakure's weakness to buy time. 451

Ebizo arranged a wartime grain agreement with Kirigakure through the Land of Bears. The trade briefly eased Sunagakure's food crisis and was publicly announced to pressure the Land of Fire, but it ended after Hoshigakure threatened Kirigakure. Sunagakure was then hit by Hoshigakure air raids while Konoha and its allies waited for shortages and exhaustion to force a retreat. 452 455

The village ultimately withdrew from the Land of Rain. Its leadership rejected sacrificing the Kazekage or Ebizo as a rear guard, instead adopting Chiyo's plan for a month-long staggered evacuation meant to mislead enemy scouts. 457 458

During the conflict, the Third Kazekage, Chiyo, and Ebizo dominated Sunagakure's leadership. Their strategic failures generated resentment among other senior officials, but neither the Kazekage line nor the puppet masters' faction could be openly challenged. 456

After the Third Kazekage's disappearance, Sunagakure fell into lockdown and internal suspicion. Rasa, the designated heir, was politically weaker than Chiyo and Ebizo, whose influence had expanded to near-total control of the village government. Konoha predicted that the village would seek war with the Land of Fire to restore unity. 655

Sunagakure launched a 100,000-man surprise assault on Konoha's Western Forest Region. Nawaki used intelligence from a Sunagakure Anbu branch station to prepare a lure-and-ambush operation; approximately 40,000 Sand Ninja were killed and more than 60,000 captured, while Rasa escaped. 658 673

Konoha subsequently invaded the Land of Wind. Sunagakure relied on guerrilla warfare, civilian support, and its newly developed air force, but Sasori's revelations undermined public trust in the village. Its guerrillas lost local support and were driven from Konoha-held territory, while Rasa replaced Chiyo and Ebizo as the Fourth Kazekage. 675 680

Kirigakure later invaded the weakened Land of Wind. Sunagakure mobilized 40,000 shinobi alongside its Kazekage and two advisers to resist, then secured a secret rescue treaty with Konoha. 826 Its later cooperation with Kirigakure was exposed by Yagura, leaving Sunagakure isolated and encircled by Konoha. 897 917

To preserve the village, Sunagakure publicly recognized Konoha's proposed one-country, two-village system and the legitimacy of Wind Ninja Village. Konoha then lifted the encirclement and withdrew its occupying forces. 917

Political Structure

Sunagakure's political power is concentrated in two entrenched inheritances rather than a broad clan system. Clan shinobi hold comparatively little influence within the village. 456

The Kazekage line's Magnet Release originated from research on the One-Tail; the Second Hokage implanted the bloodline into an ancestor of the Third Kazekage. Rasa inherited the same bloodline. 456

Chiyo and Ebizo's puppet lineage commands widespread loyalty through its disciples and the Puppet Corps. Their influence endured across multiple Kazekage administrations, though both lost prestige after Sasori's actions and Rasa's political rise. 456 680

Magnet Release

Sunagakure treats Magnet Release as a strategic-level asset, particularly within the sandstorms and desert terrain of the Land of Wind.

• The Third Kazekage's Magnet Release was considered comparable in battlefield destructive power to a Tailed Beast Jinchuriki. 379

The Puppet Corps consists exclusively of puppeteers and represents much of Sunagakure's elite combat strength.

The One-Tail

Shukaku is regarded as the foundation of Sunagakure's continued existence.
