BOOM!
A massive pillar of water erupted from the lake surface in front of Li Tong, the upward force terrifyingly powerful. This was the Water Style: Violent Explosion Flow Technique! Li Tong had obtained this from a Kirigakure spy he killed yesterday. Over the past half-month, Li Tong had killed a total of sixty-seven spies. By consuming the dropped cards, he had acquired nineteen types of C-rank ninjutsu and over a hundred D-rank ninjutsu, with more than thirty of those being duplicates!
Li Tong had asked the Card Emperor Sprite if there was any effect to consuming the same card repeatedly.
The answer was yes!
And the effect was terrifyingly potent!
For the same ninjutsu card, such as Wind Release: Great Breakthrough, consuming a second card would double the technique's power; consuming a third would double it again, and the fourth would do the same!
In other words, if Li Tong were to consume four Wind Release: Great Breakthrough cards in succession, the power of the "Great Breakthrough" he unleashed would be eight times the base power!
If he consumed a fifth!
That would be sixteen times!
Consuming a sixth would be thirty-two times!
It was a staggering, almost outrageous improvement! However, the Card Emperor Sprite also mentioned two limitations: first, one could consume at most six cards of the same ability type; second, the more one consumed, the lower the drop rate became!
For example, Li Tong had already consumed three Hidden Mist Technique cards. If he wanted to obtain a fourth, the drop rate would be extremely low; he might never obtain a fourth Hidden Mist Technique card in his entire life.
Of course, nothing was absolute. If Li Tong had the ability to go to Kirigakure and slaughter people on a massive scale—specifically killing ninjas who had mastered the Hidden Mist Technique—even with a low drop rate, if he killed enough, he would eventually get it.
Returning to the subject, although there was a six-card limit, Li Tong still felt this rule was incredibly broken!
Normally, he only needed to consume the third card for a C-rank ninjutsu's power to rival a B-rank ninjutsu, and if he consumed the sixth card, its power would inevitably rival an A-rank ninjutsu, or perhaps even an S-rank!
And that was just for C-rank!
What if he consumed six B-rank ninjutsu cards?
What if it were A-rank?
It was simply unimaginable!
Currently, Li Tong had mastered over twenty types of C-rank ninjutsu. Among them, he had consumed a second card—meaning double power—for three of them: Wind Release: Great Breakthrough, Water Style: Water Replacement, and Earth Style: Petrification. There was one more C-rank card he had already consumed a third time!
Fire Style: Flame Bullet!
One of these three cards came from a reward for killing an enemy above his level. Because Li Tong's strength was increasing, killing elite Chunin still counted as "above his level," but the rewards were not as good as before. The other two came from drops! Those two spies had both come from Amegakure!
Amegakure was a complex place. Although the ninjas there were mostly proficient in Wind and Water Style, there were also those who excelled in Fire, Lightning, and Earth Style. For instance, the leader of Amegakure, the man known as the "Demigod," the "Salamander" Hanzo—though he was world-renowned for his swordsmanship, the Fire Style: Explosive Flame Formation he had mastered was also extremely famous!
The reason for this situation in Amegakure was that it was a haven for assassins, a village of sin. Many famous rogue ninjas throughout history had ultimately chosen to defect to Amegakure.
Li Tong estimated that his current strength had reached the level of an elite Chunin. If he fought with his life on the line, utilizing his Kekkei Genkai and healing cards, he might even have a chance to kill a Jonin!
To have such an improvement in half a month could only be described as insane!
However, Li Tong was not satisfied!
Firstly, his chakra reserves could not compare to an average Chunin. While there were shortcuts to increasing chakra, Spirit Enhancement Cards were too rare. Li Tong hadn't even used a second one yet, as the Prestige Shop hadn't refreshed with one!
Secondly, over the past half-month, Li Tong had never obtained a B-rank ninjutsu through a kill drop; he only received C-rank, or lower-level D-rank and E-rank ninjutsu.
Generally speaking, ninjas capable of mastering B-rank ninjutsu were essentially at the Jonin level, though some younger elite Chunin might also master them. As for so-called geniuses, they could not be judged by common sense; some geniuses might even master B-rank ninjutsu while still in the Ninja Academy!
Li Tong craved B-rank ninjutsu. Although his chakra reserves meant he might exhaust himself after using one B-rank technique, B-rank ninjutsu were a form of accumulation. As long as he mastered enough of them, and obtained a few more Spirit Enhancement Cards, Li Tong would instantly possess Jonin-level strength!
Currently, Li Tong only mastered two B-rank ninjutsu: Lightning Style: False Darkness and the Shadow Clone Technique! He was very dissatisfied. Relying solely on these two techniques, even if he increased his total chakra, he wouldn't reach the standard of a Jonin!
On the lake, Li Tong darted and shifted, sometimes creating clones, sometimes drawing his blade, sometimes weaving hand seals!
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM-CRASH!
The lake surface shattered again and again. Li Tong was training. Recently, he would train for two hours every morning, then go into town to eat and hunt spies, leaving early and returning late, repeating the cycle.
In the past half-month, Li Tong had discovered as many as six foreign spies, including two Amegakure assassins, but he hadn't dared to strike, fearing a failure!
The consequence of failure wasn't that Li Tong would die!
It was that the Anbu would intervene, either capturing or killing the targets!
Li Tong would never allow such a thing to happen; those people were treasures to him! Either kill them, or ignore them for now and kill them when the opportunity arose! Letting the Anbu kill or capture them was a waste!
"Water Style: Water Clone!"
On the lake, Li Tong suddenly split into three. The original body held his blade and turned to ambush the clones, shattering them in succession! Both clones turned into flowing water and merged back into the lake.
"That's enough!" Li Tong stopped, breathing heavily.
His chakra had been depleted by 9%. His morning training could end here.
Sitting cross-legged on the lake surface, Li Tong began to close his eyes and recover.
Because the danger of being assassinated while in town was high, Li Tong always recovered at least 5% of his chakra before heading out.
The rippling lake surface gradually returned to calm.
Li Tong floated steadily on the water, his aura restrained and stable. He was now able to maintain his buoyancy on the water using the absolute minimum amount of chakra.
Time passed, and the sun had risen high!
Whoosh—
An obscure fluctuation of chakra suddenly arrived, followed by a thick white mist. Fog had risen on the lake, and within a few short seconds, it had shrouded the entire area.
Li Tong was suddenly startled!
This is the Hidden Mist Technique! But it wasn't cast by him!
From a tree in the distance, Chen He watched the mist-covered lake, his expression unchanging. He knew Li Tong possessed the Hidden Mist Technique, and Li Tong had often practiced it on this very lake before!
He assumed this technique was being cast by Li Tong!
Splash!
Amidst the thick fog, the sound of water erupting exploded behind Li Tong. A pitch-black figure lunged from beneath the surface, wielding a katana overflowing with cold light, transforming into a blur as it closed in on Li Tong!
Li Tong could not see; he spun around and drew his blade to defend purely on instinct!
The opponent was too fast. Blinded by the thick fog, he was unable to make any other reaction.
In a split second!
Puchi!
The cold blade pierced straight through Li Tong's heart from the front!
