History
Chu Yuan first obtained the artifact as the Soul-Seizing Scroll. His system detected the scroll as convertible, and its conversion produced the Ten Thousand Souls Banner. The transformation erased or consumed the souls previously contained in the scroll, leaving the newly created banner empty. Chu Yuan immediately identified aberrations as suitable material for rebuilding its strength 217 218.
The banner’s internal black mist erodes captured souls, grinding down their wills through prolonged agony. Chu Yuan initially filled it with sea-beast souls, but their diminished intelligence made them unsuitable for maintaining order. He therefore placed Li Hong inside as the first Soul-Refining Envoy, giving the banner an intelligent overseer for its wraith population 237.
During the Soldier Soul Mystic Realm conflict, the banner trapped Dream Moth and Hundred Butcher, then accumulated souls from the devastated Nightmare City and surrounding cities. Its soul population rose into the millions, and Chu Yuan began ordering its inhabitants to devour one another to improve their quality 257 260.
The banner became increasingly important to Chu Yuan’s combat methods. It captured Ninth Realm cultivators, released soul storms, and harvested large numbers of high-realm souls from the Legacy Secret Realm. After refining the Void Domain Heart into it, Chu Yuan also gave its inhabitants a coordinated combined-attack formation rather than relying solely on mass assaults or self-destruction 288 333 371.
By the Myriad Races Continent conflict, Chu Yuan described the banner to Lord Lisi as a war-growing artifact: each captured enemy could become a new combatant without requiring the wielder to master Soul Law. Lord Lisi recognized that widespread production of such banners could alter the balance of war against the bizarre race and provoke fear among other races 434 435.
Appearance
The Ten Thousand Souls Banner resembles a scrap of dull black, tattered cloth suspended from a long bone shaft. Faint black qi coils around its surface, creating an unsettling presence that affects even Chu Yuan when he stares at it 218.
- The banner contains an independent internal space filled only with rolling black qi. 218
- Its black mist specifically targets souls and gradually erodes their wills. 218
- At full battlefield deployment, it can expand to tens of thousands of miles, resembling a river of stars in the void. 800
Abilities & Characteristics
Soul Imprisonment and Refinement
The banner captures souls and aberrant spirit-body lifeforms, then subjects them to black mist that erodes their consciousness and reshapes them into resentful souls under its authority 218 258.
- Captured souls can retain their original realms, though they lose part of their strength after becoming resentful souls. 434
- Aberrations cannot evade the banner by dispersing and reforming their bodies; its soul-specialized black qi can erode and annihilate them directly. 258
- Ordinary attacks do not permanently destroy its resentful souls. Unless the black mist is fully purified or soul laws directly erase them, they can re-form within the banner. 257
- Souls destroyed through the banner’s commanded self-destruction do not return. 333
- A sufficiently powerful Starry Sky Sovereign-level aberration can devour resentful souls and sever their connection to the banner. 596
Command of Resentful Souls
The banner serves as both a prison and a means of troop deployment. Its inhabitants can be released in swarms, used to besiege enemies, or recalled through the banner’s black smoke 257 405.
- The banner can directly pull souls out of living targets and imprison them. 288
- Its inhabitants can be ordered to devour other souls to strengthen themselves. 260
- Soul Refining Envoys coordinate and manage the wraith population, while Soul-Serving Envoys assist them in combat command. 237 398
- Control is not equivalent to absolute Soul Enslavement: resentful souls may retain hidden motives unless their consciousness is erased. 493
- Resentful souls cannot safely roam far from the banner and are harmful to the living when released without restraint. 547
Soul Storm and Self-Destruction
Chu Yuan can order the banner’s inhabitants to self-destruct simultaneously, creating a devastating soul shockwave 332 333.
- The technique can affect souls across multiple realms at once, from low-level Martial Artists to Myriad Dao and Dao Evolution Realm beings. 428
- Self-destruction produces irreversible losses among the banner’s soul population. 333
- Chu Yuan later uses captured Sovereign-level Eerie Ones as expendable detonators against a void barrier. 658
Thousand Strikes in an Instant
After upgrading the banner with the Void Domain Heart, Chu Yuan modifies the Thousand Strikes in an Instant grand formation for its resentful souls 371.
- Resentful souls share a common origin and obey commands, avoiding the law-conflicts that make the formation inefficient for ordinary Warriors. 371
- Li Hong, Lan Feng, and A Liu coordinate the formation as Soul Refiners. 371
- World Realm souls can combine their power to unleash attacks at Creation Realm intensity. 371
Refinement and Evolution
The banner can be refined and improved rather than remaining a fixed-use artifact 434 435.
- It accepts soul-type strengthening materials. 326
- Its growth is tied to the number and quality of souls it contains; it is described as naturally evolving as its population increases. 434
- Any living being can wield it without first mastering the laws of the soul. 434
- Chu Yuan demonstrates its refining method before Lord Lisi, successfully forging a weaker new banner in front of him. 435
- Chu Yuan later teaches the refining method to Yi Meng, and Chu Ying also refines a banner of her own. 771 766

- Li Hong — First Soul-Refining Envoy; manages and disciplines the banner’s resentful souls. He rises from the Fifth Realm to the Twelfth Realm while within the banner. 237 371
- Lan Feng — Soul Refiner who recovers consciousness after entering as a remnant soul; later receives authority over the Hundred Spirits Banner for underworld administration. 361 733
- A Liu — Soul Refiner placed under Li Hong’s training and later assists with the combined-attack formation. 361 371
- Han You — Aberration who submits and becomes the first Soul-Serving Envoy, assisting the Soul Refiners in commanding attacks. 395 398
- Camellia and Fu Ling — Soul Refining Envoys tasked with gathering additional resentful souls during the Fifth Battlefield campaign. 548
- Hundred Butcher — Nightmare Insect Race captive taken into the banner after being defeated by Chu Yuan; subsequently subjected to Li Hong’s “discipline.” 257
- Dream Moth — Captured during the Soldier Soul Mystic Realm confrontation and imprisoned with the resentful souls. 257
Story Role / Major Arcs
- Acquisition and conversion — Replaces the Soul-Seizing Scroll as Chu Yuan’s highest-grade artifact, though it begins without souls. 218
- Soldier Soul Mystic Realm — Becomes the means by which Chu Yuan traps aberrations, captures Hundred Butcher, and harvests millions of souls from Nightmare City and other settlements. 256 257 260
- Legacy Secret Realm — Releases a soul storm, sacrifices resentful souls, and gains more than forty Martial God Realm souls from the aftermath. 332 333
- Eighth Battlefield expansion — Functions as Chu Yuan’s “monster spawner” strategy, feeding on captured aberrations and supporting the Ghost Clan’s growth. 392 400
- Myriad Races Continent conflict — Its self-destruction tactic is used against Jue Xue’s Returning to the Origin ritual; Chu Yuan later reveals its refining and evolution potential to Lord Lisi. 428 434 435
- Eerie and primordial war — Chu Yuan deploys captured Sovereigns for Soul Explosion and later uses the banner on a vast scale against incoming Eerie Ones. 657 658 800
Trivia
- Despite its name, the banner held at least several million resentful souls after the Nightmare City campaign. 260
- Chu Yuan once considered it comparatively unimpressive when he first acquired it, because its later upkeep and soul accumulation were costly. 424
- Zhao Zheng identifies it as an artifact that “nourishes war with war,” since defeated enemies can become future combat assets. 278
