Advancement
In a room in Fran's house.
The Steam Engine has been sitting here ever since it was last started; it hasn't been touched.
Fran placed her hand on the flywheel, gently squeezed it, and spun it a few times, feeling the force required to turn it.
Then, two magical fluctuations began to emanate from her hands, and she placed her hands on the flying wheel.
The two magical fluctuations began to fluctuate rapidly before disappearing quickly, and Fran lowered her hand.
The sound of mechanical movement arose, and the flywheel seemed to be acted upon by an unseen force, beginning to spin rapidly.
However, this force seemed to be only temporary; the flywheel's speed slowed down after a short while, and it stopped spinning after a short time.
Fran looked at the scene before her and thought: It's finally done.
"Let's call this spell Energy Conversion."
Although the spell she designed could only convert kinetic gas into mechanical energy and then release it, Fran simply named it that to save time.
However, if she continues to delve into mechanical engineering in the future, she will definitely add more functions to this spell, and only then will the spell truly live up to its name.
Fran glanced at the Steam Engine and decided to let it run freely until it stopped automatically; she had something more important to do.
Fran went to the basement, cast a Poison Mist Spell, and then quickly canceled it to prevent herself from inhaling the poison mist in the narrow basement.
[You cast Poison Mist Spell once; Poison Mist Spell Proficiency +3]
Then Fran silently recited the Panel and hurriedly looked at the attribute bar in the Panel.
[Attributes: Constitution 3.0, Spirit 3.5]
I've finally met all the requirements for becoming Formal Mage. Now I can proceed with the promotion...
Suddenly, Fran felt a thin membrane right in front of her, as if she could puncture it with a single poke.
She did nothing at first, making no movement on the thin film, and naturally nothing happened.
She released her Mental Power, rushing towards the thin membrane. With a slight exertion, the membrane receded a little distance outward.
It turns out that promotion requires her to 'confirm' it herself; she originally thought that as long as the conditions were met, she would be promoted directly.
She even deliberately controlled the pace of her spell practice to prevent her Mental Power from increasing too quickly, so as to avoid advancing directly without creating a second spell and thus missing out on the specialization.
But now that everything is ready, she specifically asked Harbos if there was anything else she should pay attention to after completing the three tests, just in case she missed something and suffered a big loss.
Harbos stated directly that as long as the three tests are completed, the candidate can be promoted without any possibility of failure, at least not when promoting to First Order Mage.
Having arrived here, Fran wasted no time and immediately unleashed her full Mental Power to pierce through the thin membrane.
Then Fran felt a force pushing her toward the gap in the membrane in front of her. She even felt her hand touch the membrane, but the force quickly sent her to the other side.
Opening her eyes, Fran found herself still standing in the same spot, with no apparent change in her surroundings.
But Fran noticed the changes within herself; she felt her Mental Power had become exceptionally vast and powerful, surpassing anything she had ever possessed before.
She could vaguely sense the tiny dust particles on the floor and the fine grain of the wood on the door...
However, we'll have to see what new changes there are on the Panel. We don't need to look at the Arts section; there probably won't be anything new there.
[Name: Fran
Profession: Formal Mage (Forge, Sword Song School) (One Star)... (omitted)
Attributes: Constitution 3.0, Spirit 9.1
Trait: Steam Engine Spell Specialty (When using Steam Engine -related spells, you increase the efficiency of energy conversion and reduce conversion losses.)
Sword Chant Mage Specialty (When you use swordsmanship, it slightly increases the casting speed of spells and reduces casting cost.)
...(slightly)]
When Fran first saw the Profession section, she was a little confused as to why her "Formal Mage" profession had a suffix followed by the names of two different School.
After reviewing the traits, Fran understood. The fact that her mage Profession had the Forge skill meant that she had likely created the Forge School's advancement system, and the Panel simply displayed the School's name.
This means that although mages who advance from different School are all mages, they have many differences, just like multiple sub-branches of a Profession.
But why is the Sword Chant School's insignia on it? Fran didn't advance according to the Sword Chant School's methods, and even obtained a skill that seemed to belong to the Sword Chant School.
"Advancement is the sum of the School's knowledge and School magical system..."
She looked up abruptly and realized why this had happened.
She speculated that the knowledge of the Sword Chant School might be replaceable by swordsmanship, while the spell system could be satisfied as long as it involved Sword Dance.
Her Elven Swordsmanship had reached mastery, and she had long since mastered Sword Dance, thus naturally meeting the requirements for advancement.
"The Panel will recognize the advancement requirements for different School, and once I meet them, I'll be considered a mage who has been promoted to that School?"
Regardless, this is good news, allowing her to increase her attributes by combining different School's advancement methods.
She felt that if she had only advanced one School of thought normally, her Mental Power should have been around 7 points, instead of reaching 9.1 after advancing two School.
Also, she gained two specializations after her promotion, which she had anticipated would be displayed in the trait section.
The description of this Steam Engine's specialty is a bit peculiar. What does it mean to reduce conversion losses? Does this Talent also improve the Steam Engine's thermal efficiency?
The Sword Chant School is easy to understand; it means that wielding a sword gives you additional spell power.
"Wait... it seems I can also meet the advancement requirements of the Transmutation School!"
If she wasn't mistaken, the Transmutation Studies could be considered the knowledge of the Transmutation School, and Fran had already acquired the Transmutation School's spells, but they were too weak for her to practice.
As long as she increases her proficiency in these spells, she can not only gain points in her Spirit attribute through this new branch of the Profession.
Furthermore, she will gain a unique specialization from the Transmutation School.
She remembered that it was easy to tell whether someone had a feat or not; you could even tell if someone had a feat for a particular spell just by looking at them casting it.
Of course, for those Transmutation School, it's easy to tell whether a corpse has been handled or whether the person who handled it had any expertise.
Fran glanced at the body bag beside her and muttered to herself:
"Let's take a section of the spine off and take a look."
