First Appearance Chapter 3

Background / History

Teron Gorefiend was an orc warlock of Gul'dan's Shadow Council. After Orgrim Doomhammer killed the Shadow Council, Gul'dan returned Teron to life by placing his soul in a human corpse, making him the first Death Knight. He and the other resurrected warlocks were expected to fight for the Horde in their stronger human bodies. 3 4

Though Orgrim killed him, Teron remains loyal to the Horde and believes its powerful Warchief will lead it to victory. He considers personal resentment secondary to the Horde's future. 6 7

Teron had been Maicomarlon's friend since their time in the Shadow Council. When Malone takes control of Maicomarlon's body, Teron initially interprets his strange behavior as illness or difficulty adapting to his new human frame. 3 19

Appearance

Teron inhabits a heavily decomposed human corpse and conceals much of his face beneath a hood. His appearance is frightening even to fellow Death Knight Malone. 3 5

  • Tall, gauntleted figure with pale dark-green skin. 3
  • Split skin around his ears and jaw, with fluid seeping down his cheeks. 3
  • Shattered dark-purple lips and a severely damaged jaw that leave him with an eerie grin. 3 24
  • Pupil-less, rotted eyes described as holding both wisdom and malice. 3 7
  • His decaying body and old clothing carry a strong rotting smell, which he cannot detect himself. 5

Personality

Teron is fiercely devoted to the Horde and accepts sacrifice as an unavoidable part of war. He views both his death and resurrection as costs he must bear for the future of his people. 6 24

He is protective of the Death Knights under his command and treats Maicomarlon as family. Even after recognizing that something else has been added to Maicomarlon's soul, he chooses to trust and help him rather than expose him. 19 24 27

Teron can be blunt, proud, and intimidating when dealing with Orc officers. He dismisses Tabek as an inexperienced warrior and challenges Orgrim directly during the dispute over Tiffany. 25 30 Beneath his grim demeanor, he is unexpectedly considerate: he obtains warm water and boots for Tiffany, and agrees to train Malone so he can survive outside the Horde. 23 36

Abilities & Skills

Death Knight Physiology

Teron's undead body does not experience ordinary physical needs or sensations.

  • Does not feel pain from burns. 17
  • Does not eat; he believes food left in a Death Knight's body accelerates decay. 18
  • Does not tire during prolonged combat. 39
  • Has lost his sense of smell due to the condition of his body. 5

Rune-Enhanced Shadow Magic

Teron bears black runes on his arms, originally used during his life as a warlock. He tattooed them onto his Death Knight body to make shadow magic easier to cast. 7

  • Uses runes to compensate for the limited magical aptitude of his human corpse. 7
  • Explains that Death Knights can use magic effectively at close range, where opponents have little opportunity to evade. 37
  • States that their damaged voices make complex spells difficult to cast. 37
  • Describes Death Knights as capable in both melee and magic, but not absolute masters of either discipline. 37

Command of the Death Knights

Teron commands the Death Knights in the Orc camp.

  • A piercing howl serves as a call to his companions. 25 27
  • His summons bring roughly one hundred Death Knights to surround Tabek and the Doomhammer's Guard. 27
  • His subordinates follow his orders strictly, including guarding Tiffany's camp and refusing entry until he returns. 34

Melee Combat and Instruction

Teron is an experienced close-range fighter and combat instructor.

  • Uses a long staff fitted with a gemstone. 5 37
  • Demonstrates proper weapon grip, two-handed sword handling, movement, and the danger of telegraphing attacks. 38
  • Can evade Malone's straightforward attacks despite Malone's far greater physical strength. 38 39
  • Trains Malone to combine instant rune-cast spells with melee attacks rather than relying on either alone. 39

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Long staff with a gemstone at its tip. 5
  • Hood and gauntlets. 3 7
  • Armor and clothing taken from corpses. 5
  • Warm-water basin and boots acquired for Tiffany. 23

Relationships

  • Malone / Maicomarlon — Former Shadow Council companion whom Teron considers closer than a blood brother. He worries about Malone's abnormal body, protects his secret, helps with his plan to leave, and trains him in combat. 19 24 36 39
  • Tiffany — Human captive associated with Malone. Teron helps protect her and unexpectedly provides her with warm water and boots. 23 25
  • Orgrim Doomhammer — Horde Warchief who killed Teron before his resurrection. Teron remains loyal to him for the Horde's sake, but later criticizes his leadership as weak. 6 33
  • Gul'dan — Former master who created the Death Knights by placing dead warlock souls into human corpses. 3 4
  • TabekOrgrim's adjutant. Teron confronts him after Tabek arrives to investigate the Death Knights, then forces him to disclose the Warchief's actual orders. 25 27
  • Kaldara — Burning Blade Blademaster. Teron is wary of Kaldara but later travels and debates with him; their interactions include frequent dry bickering. 34 46
  • Other Death Knights — Subordinates and companions who answer Teron's call and obey his authority. 27 34

Story Role / Major Arcs

Malone's Arrival

Teron is the first Azeroth native Malone encounters. He identifies Malone as Maicomarlon, explains the origin of Death Knights, and attempts to guide him through his new existence. 3

Tiffany and the Orc Camp

Teron becomes entangled in Malone's effort to protect Tiffany. He initially opposes Malone leaving with her, fearing the loss of his closest companion, but ultimately agrees to help Malone pursue the life he wants. 19 24

When Tabek's forces surround their shelter, Teron shields Malone and calls a large Death Knight force as a precaution. 25 27

Horde Political Tensions

Teron accompanies Malone to Orgrim's camp to address the dispute over Tiffany and the growing strain between Orcs, Trolls, and Death Knights. He speaks sharply to Orgrim, defends his actions, and later voices dissatisfaction with the Warchief's indecisive leadership. 28 30 33
