Background / History
Torchic originates from the Pokémon World and manifests in Douluo as Ye Chen’s Shiny, Fire-attribute External Martial Soul. While villagers initially mistake it for an ordinary poultry Martial Soul, Ye Chen recognizes it as a Torchic with multiple evolutionary forms and considerable growth potential 1.
Unlike ordinary beast Martial Souls, Torchic can separate fully from Ye Chen’s body, act independently, and display its own emotions. Su Yuntao initially judges it to be a useless mutation because of its chick-like appearance, but its golden Shiny aura gives it physical attributes far beyond those of an ordinary Torchic 2.
Torchic’s growth is driven by continual fighting. It trains against wild animals and Soul Beasts, refining the martial arts knowledge inherited from Ye Chen’s memories while feeding combat experience back to its host 6 9. Its first Soul Ring enables its evolution into the humanoid, Fire- and Fighting-type Combusken; after the third Soul Ring, it is later referred to in its Blaziken form 24 41.
Appearance
Torchic initially resembles a small golden chick, but evolves into increasingly humanoid combat forms.
- Shiny Torchic form — Small, chick-like body; short wings, yellow beak, and a golden radiance when summoned 2 3.
- Pre-evolution size — By the time of Ye Chen’s final Holy Soul Village spar, it stands roughly 40 centimeters tall and weighs about 2.5 kilograms 10.
- Combusken form — Human-chicken hybrid physique; yellow upper body, deep-orange lower body, long wing-arms, and enlarged claws and legs 24.
- Shiny effect — Its golden light marks it as comparable in rarity and physical potential to a golden beast Martial Soul 24.
- Blaziken form — Its later evolved form is capable of fighting ten-thousand-year Soul Beasts and performing advanced aerial combat 41 43.
Personality
Torchic is intensely battle-oriented and becomes visibly excited when ordered to fight. Its Jolly Nature favors speed over energy-based offense, fitting its preference for fast, physical combat 5.
Despite its eagerness to fight, Torchic is protective of Ye Chen. It instinctively intercepted Tang San when he attempted to bypass it and attack Ye Chen directly, then retaliated with a sustained barrage of kicks and strikes 4.
It is also emotionally expressive: it resents being called a useless chicken, becomes disappointed when its evolution fails, and readily cheers up when Ye Chen reassures it 2 17. It can be friendly toward other External Martial Souls, offering Luo Sanpao a handshake after learning that it was not a Soul Beast 14.
Abilities & Skills
External Martial Soul Physiology
Torchic is an External Martial Soul capable of manifesting independently from Ye Chen.
- Can be summoned, retracted, and directed separately from Ye Chen’s body 3 4.
- Possesses independent awareness, emotions, and the instinct to protect its host 4 17.
- Shares Soul Power consumption with Ye Chen; excessive skill use drains his reserves 6.
- Its externalized nature and Ye Chen’s Body Martial Soul create the basis for a potential Self Martial Soul Fusion Skill 6 23.
- Tang San’s modified Blue Silver Bind can restrict its summoning and retraction 32.
Shiny Physical Enhancement
As a Shiny Pokémon Martial Soul, Torchic’s physical attributes are doubled relative to an ordinary Torchic and remain enhanced through its evolutionary forms 2.
- High speed, physical strength, and durability from the outset.
- Gains substantial increases to speed, attack, defense, and overall quality upon evolving into Combusken 24.
- Its physical fighting style is further suited to its Jolly Nature, which favors speed 5.
Speed Boost
Speed Boost is Torchic’s innate acceleration trait.
- Increases its speed by 10% after each combat round 4.
- Continues stacking until it reaches the body’s physical speed limit 4.
- Lets it overwhelm opponents who fail to end the fight quickly; after twenty rounds, Tang San could no longer keep up 4.
- Its stacked speed also enhances the power of Fire-type attacks while Blaze is active 23.
Martial Arts and Fighting Techniques
Torchic inherited Ye Chen’s knowledge of martial arts, combat sports, and fighting philosophies during its awakening, making it a natural combat specialist 3.
- Uses complex footwork combining pendulum, sliding, butterfly, and fencing steps 3.
- Employs kicking, strikes, flying kicks, and techniques comparable to Inch Punch force delivery 8.
- Gains the Fighting attribute after evolving into Combusken 24.
- Can imitate opponents’ martial arts; it recreates Xiao Wu’s Explosive Eight-Stage Throw as the Explosive Eight-Stage Kick 31.
- Later incorporates Fire Punch, Blaze Kick, and aerial kicking combinations into its style 43.
Fire-Type Techniques
Torchic’s primary attribute is Fire, granting it a broad set of ranged and close-combat flame attacks.
- Ember — Fires small flames from its beak; can be weakened deliberately to avoid seriously injuring an opponent 12 48.
- Fire Spin — Compresses and expels Ember to form a rotating flame attack; can destroy Blue Silver hidden weapons and mitigate impact damage 27 30 31.
- Flamethrower — Its later high-powered ranged fire attack 43.
- Flame Claw — A planned technique combining Fire-type Soul Power with Slash 26.
- Fire attacks can burn away poison mist, including Dugu Yan’s Jade Phosphorous Purple Poison 48.

- Enhances decisive attacks against vital points 8.
- Commonly paired with Slash, Double Kick, and close-range assaults 15 36.

Blaze is Ye Chen’s first Soul Skill, obtained from the Blazing Bird Soul Ring and applied to Torchic rather than Ye Chen himself 23.
- Lasts 30 minutes 23.
- Raises the power of Fire-type skills by 70% 23.
- Gains an additional 10% Fire-type power for each Speed Boost stack, until its speed can no longer rise 23.
- Allowed Combusken to withstand and counter Xiao Wu’s Explosive Eight-Stage Throw 31.
Flash Fire
Flash Fire is Ye Chen’s second Soul Skill, acquired from the Blazing Sun Eagle Soul Ring 36.
- Lasts 30 minutes 36.
- Makes Combusken immune to Fire-type attacks and Fire-type recoil damage 36.
- Doubles the power of its next Fire-type attack 36.
- Absorbs ambient light and heat to restore injuries, stamina, Soul Power, and mental power 36.
- Cannot cure abnormal conditions such as poison or paralysis 36.
Aerial Mobility
Combusken develops aerial options through experience and physical training.
- Bounce — Enables aerial movement 37.
- Air Walk — Allows it to fight airborne opponents 37 43.
- Can combine Air Walk with a fire-enhanced Explosive Eight-Stage Kick for decisive mid-air attacks 43.
Sword Dance
Sword Dance is the third Soul Skill gained from the Sword-Horned Fire-Explosive Dragon Soul Ring 40.
- Its specific effect has not yet been described.
- It was obtained alongside Ye Chen’s successful absorption of an eight-thousand-year third Soul Ring 40.
Relationships
- Ye Chen — Host, trainer, and closest partner. They share tacit coordination, combat experience feedback, and a potential path toward Self Martial Soul Fusion 8 23.
- Tang San — Repeated opponent. Torchic defeats Tang San several times and becomes a major focus of Tang San’s counter-strategies 4 8 32.
- Luo Sanpao — Fellow External Martial Soul. Torchic initially mistakes it for a Soul Beast, then offers friendship after Ye Chen explains its nature 14.
- Xiao Wu — Combat opponent. Combusken defeats her with an Explosive Eight-Stage Kick after adapting her own martial arts 31.
- Dugu Yan — Opponent in a spar arranged by Ye Chen. Blaziken effortlessly burns away her Jade Phosphorous Purple Poison with Ember 48.
- Su Yuntao — Initially dismisses Torchic as a useless chick Martial Soul, then is shocked by its evolution into Combusken 2 26.
