Story Role / Major Arcs
Ye Chen's Enrollment and Yu Xiaogang Proposal
After reviewing Ye Chen's enrollment information, Ding identifies his Innate Full Soul Power and permanently external Blaziken Martial Soul as extraordinary. He summons his old friend Yu Xiaogang, believing their shared experience with External Martial Souls could make Xiaogang an ideal teacher for Ye Chen. 13
Ding observes the duel intended to determine the proposed master-disciple relationship. Blaziken defeats Luo Sanpao, leaving Xiaogang injured through martial-soul backlash; Ding subsequently tries to preserve the arrangement, but Ye Chen refuses to accept a teacher weaker than himself. 15 16
First Soul Ring Hunt
Rather than withdraw support after Ye Chen's refusal, Ding commits to personally hunting a Soul Beast for him and loans him a manual to prepare. 16 17
He escorts Ye Chen through the Soul Hunting Forest, teaches him survival principles, and joins him in capturing a Blazing Bird over five hundred years old. Ye Chen successfully absorbs its Soul Ring and gains the skill Blaze, while his Blaziken Martial Soul evolves into Combusken. 19 20 22 23 24
Ye Chen's Solo Training
Although initially opposed to leaving Ye Chen alone in the forest, Ding ultimately lends him a pass after Ye Chen insists that real combat against Soul Beasts is necessary for growth. 24
Nearly two months later, Ding meets Ye Chen at the forest entrance and returns with him to Nuoding Academy. He expresses his hope that Ye Chen will remain an academy student through graduation, so the academy may share in his future reputation. 27
Trivia
- Ding initially believes Ye Chen's martial soul may be a benign mutation rather than a malignant one because Innate Full Soul Power indicates high martial-soul quality. 13
- He asks Ye Chen not to reveal Yu Xiaogang's defeat to the other students, fearing Xiaogang's embarrassment. 17
- Ding recognizes that Ye Chen's rapid physical growth after forest training may be connected to his unusually powerful first Soul Ring, though Ye Chen conceals the true cause of his advancement. 27
