Background / History

Yu Xiaogang was an old friend of Nuoding Academy’s Dean Ding Yuan and stayed at the academy temporarily. His own Blue Lightning Overlord Dragon Martial Soul underwent a malignant mutation, becoming the permanently external Luo Sanpao. This shared status as an External Martial Soul user led Ding Yuan to ask him to assess Ye Chen’s unusual Blaziken Martial Soul 13.

As a Martial Soul theorist, Yu Xiaogang published the Ten Core Competencies of Martial Soul at Martial Soul Hall. When examining Ye Chen’s Innate Full Soul Power, he argued that a malignant mutation could not produce such power; he considered either Twin Martial Souls or a beneficial mutation more plausible 13.

He initially agreed to consider Ye Chen as his sole disciple, declaring that he would only devote himself to one student with godlike potential. Ye Chen instead demanded that Yu Xiaogang first defeat Blaziken, treating combat strength as a prerequisite for becoming his teacher 14.

Yu Xiaogang lost the ensuing duel despite escalating from a self-imposed restriction to full Soul Power and Soul Skills. Luo Sanpao’s injuries fed back onto him, leaving him beaten and humiliated; Ye Chen refused his apprenticeship afterward. Yu Xiaogang departed Nuoding Academy’s grounds in anger after their argument 15 16.

Tang San later chose Yu Xiaogang as his teacher. During their first Soul Hunting Forest expedition, Yu Xiaogang guided Tang San in hunting a Datura Snake and tested his Martial Soul Mimicry Theory by having Blue Silver Grass absorb the snake’s Soul Ring. The successful absorption supported his theory, though Yu Xiaogang was poisoned through Luo Sanpao’s backlash and fell into a coma before recovering under Tang San’s care 19 21 22.

Personality

Yu Xiaogang is highly analytical and places great faith in Martial Soul theory. He methodically evaluates mutations, innate soul power, Soul Ring compatibility, and a disciple’s potential, believing tailored instruction is more valuable than accepting many students 13 14.

He is also proud and sensitive about his weak combat performance. Ye Chen’s defeat of Luo Sanpao and subsequent criticism of his theory provoked visible anger and humiliation, particularly because Yu Xiaogang’s public reputation rests on scholarship rather than battlefield strength 16.

Tang San’s Mentor

After Ye Chen rejects him, Yu Xiaogang becomes Tang San’s teacher. He leads Tang San into the Soul Hunting Forest, educates him on Soul Beast hunting, and directs the Datura Snake Soul Ring experiment that validates his Mimicry Theory 19 21.

Datura Snake Poisoning
