Background / History
Tang Wulin enters Eastsea Academy as a work-study student and initially believes that Yao Chuan, a celebrated novelist, is physically frail. When he sees Xie Xie apparently attacking Yao Chuan, Tang Wulin intervenes out of chivalry, only for Yao Chuan to effortlessly pin both boys down with one hand. The misunderstanding ends when Tang learns that Xie Xie is Yao Chuan’s subordinate. 19
He is assigned to Class Five alongside Xie Xie and Zhou Changxi after the dormitory fight. His gratitude toward Yao Chuan quickly becomes admiration: after losing an eating contest to him, Tang asks whether he may call him “Big Brother.” 20 21
Tang is a blacksmith apprentice under Mang Tian. At age nine, he completes a Thousand-Refined Heavy Silver during his Level 2 Blacksmith examination, only to learn that Yao Chuan had achieved the same feat three years earlier. Rather than giving up, Tang uses the disparity as motivation to improve. 24 25
During special training, Tang, Xie Xie, and Gu Yue repeatedly fail to overcome Yao Chuan even when he suppresses his strength. In their final attempt, Tang’s Golden Dragon King bloodline first manifests through the golden-scaled transformation of his right arm. 34 35
Tang later discovers a sealed Golden Dragon King within his body and encounters the resident consciousness calling itself “Old Tang.” Because Old Tang’s manner and demands resemble the villainous remnant soul in Yao Chuan’s novel Soul Breaking the Firmament, Tang becomes convinced that he may be facing an Evil Soul Master seeking possession. 36 37
Yao Chuan purchases the three spiritual items needed to open Tang’s first seal, describing them as a loan. Tang follows Old Tang’s instructions to use them, breaks the first seal, and gains a strengthened body and evolved Blue Silver Grass. 40 41
Personality
Tang Wulin is straightforward, kind-hearted, and strongly driven by gratitude. He instinctively defends people he believes are being wronged, as seen when he attacks Xie Xie to protect Yao Chuan despite barely knowing either of them. 19
He is highly competitive but not resentful. Learning that Yao Chuan completed Thousand Refinement at six years old devastates his confidence briefly, yet he turns the shock into motivation rather than jealousy. 24 25
Tang’s trust in Yao Chuan becomes exceptionally deep. He seeks Yao’s advice after meeting Old Tang, accepts his forging supervision, and openly rejects Tang San’s accusations against him. 37 38 40 41
Despite his initial naivety, Tang develops caution toward Old Tang and recognizes attempts to manipulate his emotions. When Old Tang tries to provoke jealousy toward Yao Chuan, Tang condemns the tactic rather than accepting it. 45
Abilities & Skills
Blue Silver Grass
Tang’s primary Martial Soul is Blue Silver Grass. Though commonly dismissed as weak, his vines are unusually tough and resilient.
- First Soul Skill: Bind — Releases Blue Silver Grass vines to restrain opponents. 19
- His vines withstand strikes from Xie Xie’s Light Dragon Dagger, producing sparks and resisting being cut through. 19
- Following the first Golden Dragon King seal’s release, the grass develops a golden glow and becomes visibly more robust. 41
- Wu Changkong criticizes Tang for relying on physical strength rather than properly incorporating his Martial Soul into combat. 28
Golden Dragon King Bloodline
A sealed Golden Dragon King exists within Tang’s body, bound by eighteen seals. Old Tang claims that each seal broken will produce a qualitative rise in Tang’s physique, potential, and strength. 36
- Golden Scale — Golden scales cover Tang’s right arm and grant explosive power during battle. 35
- His transformed punch manifests a faint golden dragon-head phantom, though Yao Chuan overwhelms it with his Black Dragon Martial Soul. 35
- Breaking the first seal strengthens his body, muscles, bones, blood, and soul power. 41
- The power can leak unconsciously under emotional or physical strain; Yao Chuan is able to absorb traces of this leaked energy. 37 38
Physical Strength
Tang possesses unusual raw strength even before fully unlocking the Golden Dragon King’s power.
- Defeats Zhou Changxi in a direct strength contest with clean, powerful punches. 28
- His physical power supports his forging work and contributes to his ability to wield heavy hammers. 24 39
- His early combat style is overly direct; he must learn adaptability, Martial Soul use, and tactical awareness. 28
Blacksmithing
Tang is an exceptionally talented young blacksmith trained by Mang Tian and later supervised by Yao Chuan.
- Completes a Thousand-Refined Heavy Silver at age nine and passes the Level 2 Blacksmith examination. 24
- Receives intensive training from Yao Chuan, who teaches him to sense a metal’s structure and rhythm through spiritual perception rather than sight. 39
- Passes the Level 3 Blacksmith examination after completing another Thousand-Refined Heavy Silver. 39
- Xie Xie expects Tang to forge components for his future mecha. 39
Mysterious Heaven Skill
Tang uses the Mysterious Heaven Skill to guide the ice and fire energies needed to break the first Golden Dragon King seal. 41
Relationships
- Yao Chuan — Roommate and trusted “Big Brother.” Tang admires Yao’s strength, forging talent, composure, and support; he trusts Yao more than Old Tang, unaware that Yao secretly absorbs leaked Golden Dragon King power. 21 37 38 40
- Xie Xie — Classmate and friend. Their first encounter is hostile because Tang mistakes him for Zhou Changxi’s accomplice; they later train and compete together. 19 20 35
- Gu Yue — Classmate and training partner. Tang fights beside her and Xie Xie against Yao Chuan; her jealousy over Tang’s closeness with Yao Chuan leaves him confused. 34 35 39
- Old Tang / Tang San — A divine consciousness within Tang’s Sea of Consciousness that guides him toward unlocking the Golden Dragon King seals. Tang remains suspicious of his motives and rejects his attempts to turn him against Yao Chuan. 36 41 45
- Mang Tian — Tang’s blacksmithing master. He entrusts Yao Chuan with supervising Tang’s forging progress during the academy term. 24 38
- Wu Changkong — Tang’s strict homeroom teacher and combat instructor, who pushes him to fight with greater tactical awareness. 26 28
