Background / History

Kabuto grows up at Konoha Orphanage under Yakushi Nonō. Around age ten, he recognizes that Hokage Uchiha Genya and Orochimaru have come there specifically for him. When he fears the visit will endanger the children, he offers to serve them in exchange for their safety 221 222.

Genya funds the orphanage and assigns Kabuto to Orochimaru at Hozuki Castle, advising him to study medical ninjutsu. Kabuto becomes a valuable research assistant, contributing ideas to experiments while sending regular reports to the Hokage. Despite Orochimaru’s punishing training schedule, letters from Nonō and the orphanage—and the knowledge that their lives are improving—help him persevere 222 280 282.

Nonō’s apparent death drives Kabuto to investigate Genya and seek power for revenge. He poisons Orochimaru, takes the Ryūchi Cave summoning scroll, and undergoes its dangerous senjutsu trials. Kabuto does not know that the poison failed, Nonō is alive, and Genya and Orochimaru engineered his path to Ryūchi Cave 332 334 335 349.

After Kabuto masters senjutsu, Genya confronts him at Ryūchi Cave and treats their battle as a graduation exam. Kabuto later learns the truth about Nonō’s staged death. He remains resentful, but accepts an undercover assignment: posing as an S-rank rogue ninja who hates Genya while spying on the Akatsuki for Konoha 345 346 349 351.

Kabuto and Hidan infiltrate the Akatsuki, and Kabuto passes intelligence to Konoha. After their role in its failed attack on the village is exposed, Genya sends Kabuto back to the weakened organization with a Rinnegan and an Impure World Reincarnation army. Kabuto secures Obito’s cooperation and proposes a wider war against the other ninja villages 353 411 422 425 444 445.

His attachment to Nonō and the orphanage shapes his ambitions. He initially hopes his work will buy them a better life; believing Nonō dead turns that determination into hatred. His resolve carries him through Ryūchi Cave’s trial, but the White Snake Sage observes that his anger also blinds him to signs that others have arranged his journey 331 343 344.
