Organization and Leadership

Genya’s rules separate clan leadership from senior public office, while his support for individual members’ careers and businesses has reduced the authority that clan heads can exercise over their families. The Uchiha were among the first clans subjected to this division of power 177 454.

Clan assemblies are held at Naka Shrine. Any clan member who has awakened the Sharingan may attend, but speaking rights generally belong to Three-Tomoe users or those with jōnin-level strength 5. Hikari’s nominal leadership also extends to the Ninja Cats at the Empty District, who recognize her as clan head despite her limited authority over the human clan 177.

Background

During the Warring States Period, the Uchiha were nobles in the Land of Lightning and one of the major clans opposing the Senju. Their history includes the sealing of Uchiha Hikari, an ancestor whose own clan had raised her as a weapon before the Senju, Uzumaki, and Sarutobi joined forces against her 138 148. Hikari’s strength had so thoroughly intimidated the shinobi clans of her era that they maintained her seal rather than risk releasing her to kill her and claim her Mangekyō Sharingan 400.

The clan’s cultivation of Hikari involved using every Mangekyō it held in reserve to strengthen her eyes. The lack of sufficiently close blood relationships prevented the fusion from completing, leaving her just short of the Eternal Mangekyō until Genya’s later intervention 393. Her treatment left her deeply hostile to the Uchiha themselves, which was also a reason the clan did not release her after her sealing 139 146.

The Uchiha and Senju eventually founded Konoha together after Senju Hashirama defeated Uchiha Madara, temporarily suppressing their ancestral blood feud 138 326. The clan remained one of Konoha’s two founding families, yet later generations faced institutional distrust and political containment 6 19.

When Madara later sought to leave Konoha and take the Uchiha with him, not a single clan member followed. He interpreted their attachment to the village’s peace as complacency; Genya later invokes this rejection when opposing Madara’s renewed ambitions 462 492.

During the Third Great Ninja War, the Uchiha were deployed to the Land of Water despite poor battlefield compatibility, suffering severe losses. Their contributions were allegedly ignored by Konoha’s leadership, including delayed or absent pensions, intensifying resentment toward the village 1. Even after those losses, a clan meeting could gather five to six hundred Sharingan-awakened chūnin or stronger, demonstrating the clan’s remaining depth 5.

The clan’s control of the Police Force became a long-term constraint: its members were confined to low-value patrol and enforcement work, limiting income, mission experience, and the development of its middle and lower ranks 19. This situation changed when Genya turned the Security Division into a political and military power base for the clan 12 19.

Clan Culture

• The Uchiha prioritize demonstrated strength over age or seniority; a sufficiently powerful member can command broad respect throughout the clan 8 51.
• Clan members are portrayed as highly protective of Sharingan bloodline rights. Unauthorized transplantation is treated as a cause for life-or-death retaliation 48.
• The clan historically carried a hostile reputation among Konoha civilians and rival clans, a reputation Genya was willing to exploit rather than repair through appeasement 13 29.
• The Uchiha do not use a clan-wide equivalent of the Hyūga Caged Bird Seal, relying instead on retaliation to deter theft of their dōjutsu 48.
• Although outsiders may marry into the clan, the Uchiha seek to prevent Sharingan power from leaking beyond the family name and structure 227.
• Marriage within the clan is customary rather than compulsory. Abilities & Skills

Sharingan

The Sharingan is the clan’s defining dōjutsu. It grants exceptional visual perception, supports the copying of ninjutsu, and pairs especially well with high-speed linear techniques.

• Its dynamic vision allows users to track and exploit rapid movements, making techniques such as Chidori far more lethal in Uchiha hands 25.
• Three-Tomoe Sharingan users and jōnin are granted speaking rights at clan meetings, reflecting the eye’s importance to internal status 5.
• The clan’s battlefield reputation holds that one opponent facing an awakened Sharingan user is at a severe disadvantage; three opponents are considered necessary for a reliable victory 25.
• An elite Three-Tomoe Uchiha is stated to be comparable to three ordinary jōnin in combat value 79.
• The Sharingan can be deactivated, allowing its users to conceal their eyes when necessary 93.
• Strong emotions and personal loss can trigger awakening. Genya first awakened his Sharingan after his parents died during the Third Great Ninja War 1.

Fire Release and Yin Release

The Uchiha’s natural chakra tendencies are generally Fire Release and Yin Release.

• Coordinated Uchiha Fire Release can combine into overwhelming large-scale attacks, as demonstrated when several elite members incinerated Aburame Torune’s nano-insect swarm 68.
• Yin Release affinity contributes to the clan’s aptitude for illusion techniques and ocular powers 110.
• Yang Release users are exceptionally rare among the Uchiha, contributing to the clan’s relative lack of medical and sealing specialists 110.
• Many Uchiha shinobi also possess both fire and lightning chakra natures, making Genya’s fusion of those elements particularly attractive to Fugaku as a potential source of clan strength 227.
• Madara’s Majestic Destroyer Flame overwhelms the combined Great Fireball Technique of several Allied Shinobi Forces members, illustrating the scale attainable by the clan’s foremost Fire Release specialists 467.

Mangekyō Sharingan

The Mangekyō Sharingan is the clan’s highest standard ocular evolution. It grants unique individual dōjutsu and access to Susanoo, but prolonged use risks blindness unless the user finds another means of restoring or evolving their ocular power 32 60.

• A Mangekyō’s abilities are not uniform; each user’s eyes can develop different techniques 302.
• Amaterasu, Tsukuyomi, and Kagutsuchi have appeared repeatedly throughout Uchiha history. Awakening driven principally by a desire for power is said generally to produce two of these three abilities rather than a more unusual technique 302.
• Hikari’s incomplete Eternal Mangekyō and fragmented Susanoo were attributed to transplantation from donors who were not close blood relatives 140 393.
• Genya achieved the Eternal Mangekyō by absorbing another Mangekyō’s ocular power. The fusion removed the danger of blindness and strengthened both of his techniques, with Kotoamatsukami’s power particularly enhancing Mirror Flower, Water Moon 60.

Susanoo

Mangekyō users can manifest Susanoo as a massive chakra construct for offense and defense.

• Genya’s Susanoo was capable of confronting the Nine-Tails and executing the terrain-cleaving Thoughtless Blade 38.
• His complete purple Susanoo reached hundreds of meters in height during the Kirigakure conflict, terrifying opposing forces into recognizing it as comparable to Uchiha Madara’s power 203.
• Hikari later deployed a crimson Susanoo against Ōtsutsuki Urashiki before completing her Eternal Mangekyō evolution 306.
• After completing that evolution, Hikari manifested a fully armored Complete Body Susanoo hundreds of meters tall against Pain’s summoned beasts and tore one apart with it 400.

Blaze Release

Genya develops a distinct Blaze Release by studying Matatabi’s chakra and fusing Lightning Release with Fire Release. Its blue flames possess enormous energy density, and loss of stability releases their energy as a massive explosion. This fusion is separate from the manipulation of Amaterasu flames through Kagutsuchi 194 195 302.

• Initial use requires Matatabi’s assistance or time to combine the two transformations. Its instability makes it at least S-rank in learning difficulty 194 195.
• Genya offers to make its training scroll public once the technique is stable, but the available accounts do not establish widespread mastery among the Uchiha 227.
• By his duel with Madara, Genya can direct a True Flame Great Ball’s explosion forward from his palm rather than releasing an indiscriminate blast. Its output briefly exceeds the rate at which Madara’s Rinnegan can absorb it 490.

Clan Limitations

• The clan lacks the Hyūga’s reconnaissance capacity; Genya sought Hyūga cooperation partly to compensate for this weakness 79.
• Most Uchiha are poorly suited to Kumogakure’s Lightning Release Chakra Mode because its physical demands exceed the clan’s typical constitution 179.
• The clan’s emotional extremes and scarcity of Yang Release specialists leave it vulnerable to imbalances in temperament and support capabilities 110.
• Reliance on powerful ocular techniques can create exploitable weaknesses. Hikari’s historical defeat and sealing followed her overconfidence in her own overwhelming abilities, while Itachi’s declining eyesight demonstrates the sustained cost of Mangekyō use 151 396.
• The Uchiha are primarily a ninjutsu clan rather than a taijutsu-focused family. Genya regards Lightning Release Chakra Mode as available to members who wish to develop their physical potential, but generally not worth the required effort for most of them 179.
• Ōtsutsuki chakra absorption can neutralize ordinary Amaterasu. Fugaku counters this problem by infusing his flame manipulation with Natural Energy through a Cursed Seal, allowing his Sage Art: Kagutsuchi to harm Urashiki 302 304.

Assets and Institutions

• Konoha Military Police Force / Security Division — Historically monopolized by the Uchiha; later transformed into the clan’s central political and enforcement instrument 1 19. It subsequently recruited shinobi from other clans and civilian backgrounds, rather than remaining an exclusively Uchiha force 93 94 295. As its role shifted toward internal security, most elite fighters left; Fugaku’s later force consisted mainly of chūnin and genin with very few jōnin, and inexperienced genin could assist it through D-rank missions 144 276.
• Uchiha elite forces — Three-Tomoe users can operate in coordinated groups for large-scale Fire Release and high-intensity law-enforcement actions 68 118. Under Genya’s administration, elite Uchiha were also transferred from policing into the Anbu 108. Itachi later serves in the Shogun’s personal guard, with intelligence access exceeding even Fugaku’s 384.
• Ninja Cats — A clan-associated network based around the Empty District and Cat Granny. They cooperate with Genya’s requests, including intelligence work, but refuse to work alongside ninja dogs 79 179. The Empty District houses hundreds of Ninja Cats and serves as an important Uchiha base 177.
• Ancestral assets — The clan’s accumulated wealth helped sustain it despite declining mission opportunities and wartime losses 19.
• Uchiha Gunbai — An ancestral token of clan leadership and a powerful divine weapon. Madara reclaimed it from Obito after his reanimation, but Genya subsequently took it during their duel and passed it to Hikari 466 486 487.
• Commercial expansion — With Hokage support, Uchiha members have spread through the Land of Fire to seize markets and establish businesses as part of Konoha’s wider economic development 276.

Relationships

• Konohagakure — Co-founded by the Uchiha and Senju, but later became the source of the clan’s political isolation, surveillance, and economic stagnation 19 326. Genya’s accession fulfills the clan’s long-standing wish to produce a Hokage, while the opening of the Security Division to outsiders creates a path toward fuller integration into village life 51 115 143.
• Senju Clan — Historical mortal enemies during the Warring States Period; the two clans ultimately founded Konoha together 138 148. Genya later disputed Tobirama’s characterization of the Uchiha as inherently evil, arguing against punishing an entire clan for an individual’s actions 416. Hashirama viewed Genya’s relationship with Tsunade as the genuine reconciliation he had once hoped to achieve through marriage; Tsunade is subsequently described as having married into the Uchiha family 325 415.
• Hyūga Clan — Allied with the Uchiha through the Security Division, combining Sharingan combat strength with Byakugan reconnaissance 89 91 118. By Akatsuki’s invasion, their unity is identified as a major component of Konoha’s growing strength 379.

• Other great villages — Their leaders regard both Madara and Genya as overwhelming threats. A, Ōnoki, Mei Terumi, and Rasa move toward cooperation against Genya as Konoha’s expansion raises fears that he intends to annex the entire ninja world 481.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Marginalization and Internal Radicalization

The Uchiha begin the story alienated from Konoha after the Third Great Ninja War. Genya’s speeches transform existing resentment into organized political pressure, challenging Fugaku’s passive leadership and pushing the clan toward direct action 1 6 10.

At this stage, the clan has not yet reached the point of staging a coup, and its grounds have not been forcibly relocated outside the village 6. Genya argues that its strength constitutes at least a quarter, and perhaps a third, of Konoha’s fighting power, making outright suppression potentially ruinous for the village 10.

Control of the Security Division

Genya assumes authority over the Security Division and reframes the clan’s Police Force from a burden into a tool for accumulating wealth, influence, and leverage over rival factions 12 19. The Uchiha use this authority aggressively against clans connected to Root, including demanding compensation for the death of Yamanaka Fu 28 29.

Defeat of Root and Rise to Power

After Genya defeats Root operatives and exposes Danzō’s possession of Uchiha eyes, the clan openly moves against Root. Genya’s execution of Danzō and seizure of Root’s assets establish the Uchiha as Konoha’s dominant military-political faction 30 68 70.

The Nine-Tails incident also places the clan under renewed suspicion. Danzō cites the Sharingan seen in the beast’s eyes as evidence against the Uchiha, while Genya counters that a transplanted eye could produce the same result and that the sighting alone does not establish collective responsibility 45.

Uchiha Hokage Administration

Genya’s accession to the Hokage position turns the clan’s influence into village-wide authority. The Uchiha gain allies among the Hyūga, restructure Konoha’s institutions, and use financial pressure against clans tied to the former Hokage faction 91 115 168.

Jiraiya publicly supports allowing an Uchiha to become Hokage, and Genya assures him that he does not intend a political purge of the former Hokage faction 105. As the administration develops, the Security Division becomes less exclusively Uchiha, while elite clan members gain positions in other military institutions 108 143 144.

Return of Uchiha Hikari

Genya and Itachi unseal Hikari, a Mangekyō-wielding ancestor traumatized by being raised as a weapon. After defeating and restraining her, Genya installs her as clan head while retaining practical control through his Hokage authority and Fugaku’s oversight 138 143 153.

Genya initially presents the position as a way for Hikari to rule over the descendants of those who persecuted her 147. Her chakra remains sealed while she adjusts to modern life and improves her basic combat skills; after she admits that she cannot defeat Itachi under those restrictions, Genya removes the Eight Trigrams Seal with Rule Breaker, warning her not to use her power on anyone in Konoha without permission 151 275.

Expansion Beyond Konoha

Under Genya, the Uchiha become central to Konoha’s wars and expansion. The clan’s power is displayed against Kumogakure, Kirigakure, Akatsuki-linked threats, and Ōtsutsuki Urashiki 122 203 302 307.

During the Urashiki battle, Fugaku reveals his Mangekyō abilities to outsiders for the first time and uses senjutsu-enhanced flame manipulation to overcome the alien’s absorption 302. Hikari’s attempt to drain Urashiki also stimulates her stalled ocular fusion, demonstrating the value of Ōtsutsuki chakra to the clan’s inherited powers 307.

Eternal Eye and Akatsuki Conflict

During the conflict involving Akatsuki’s invasion, Hikari completes her Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan fusion and uses Yachihoko to defeat Deidara and Biwa Jūzō by controlling their minds and draining their chakra 393. The ongoing fighting also exposes the physical cost borne by the clan’s Mangekyō users, as Itachi continues fighting despite severe deterioration in his right eye 396. Hikari subsequently finds Yachihoko ineffective against Pain’s Rinnegan-bearing summons and responds by deploying her newly complete, fully armored Susanoo 400. Genya later promises to restore Itachi’s depleted ocular power and guide his Mangekyō toward an Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan 423.

Clan Authority Under the Shogunate

After combining the Daimyō’s and Kage’s offices, Genya continues to strengthen Konoha while loosening the hold of traditional clan leadership. Uchiha members benefit from opportunities in government and commerce, but their increasing independence also divides authority within the family, mirroring a wider pattern among Konoha’s clans 177 276 350 454.

Genya makes Konoha his capital and replaces the former Hokage office with a large Castle Keep serving as his residence and administrative headquarters. Foreign daimyō condemn his seizure of power, but the other great villages initially refuse their demands to attack him 341.

Madara’s Return and Defeat

Kabuto reanimates Madara after Akatsuki’s collapse leaves Obito and Black Zetsu searching for a stronger opponent to Genya. Madara learns that a younger Uchiha has become Fifth Hokage, recalling both his own former ambition and the clan’s refusal to follow him out of Konoha 420 462.

After overwhelming Allied Shinobi Forces and confronting the Kage, Madara appears before Genya with Obito 466 467 484. Their duel tests close combat, genjutsu, domain-type ocular techniques, Susanoo, and the combined powers of the Uchiha and Senju. Genya takes Madara’s Gunbai and gives it to Hikari, while repeatedly overcoming Madara’s attacks 486 487 488 489 490.

Madara ultimately acknowledges that Genya has surpassed every Uchiha in history. Genya rejects the notion that the clan would follow Madara’s ambitions, and Madara later admits that his defeat was comprehensive and that Genya took his Rinnegan 492 511.

Emotional Crisis and the Pure Land

Hikari experiences a severe emotional crisis when she believes she has lost Genya. Her childhood trauma and despair overwhelm her reason, and bloody tears accompany the activation of Yachihoko’s Inscribed Tsukuyomi 495.

Madara subsequently awakens in the Pure Land after the Golden Wheel Reincarnation Explosion interrupted his transformation. Hagoromo explains that he intervened to preserve Madara’s consciousness, prompting suspicion that the Sage intends to use him 508. Hagoromo later identifies Genya as a threat capable of undermining the chakra system itself and offers Madara the power of the Sage of Six Paths. Madara, disillusioned by Black Zetsu’s manipulation and his defeat, hesitates rather than immediately accepting 511.
