Background / History

Michael's body originally belonged to an illegitimate son of Franz I, Holy Roman Emperor, and an Animusphere noblewoman. The original Michael was drained by a Dead Apostle, rose from his grave as an undead, and spent years fleeing Church Executors across half the world before reaching the Far East. There, the transmigrator Lu Jinyan consumed the body's original soul and inherited its identity. 2

Immediately after arriving in the Nasuverse, Lu Jinyan was killed by Executors of the Holy Church. He revived as a Dead Apostle, discovered the starlike radiance within his body, and resolved to survive by hiding, studying magecraft, and exploiting his immortality. He spent roughly two centuries building knowledge and infrastructure, though his mana accumulation remained painfully slow. 2

When Merlin Solomon located Michael's castle, Michael's Secondary Mana Capacity was only 13%. He escaped through an unknown spatial magecraft, abandoning the castle's magic circle and relying on the Ley Line-charged sapphire he called the Tear of the Goddess. 1

Appearance

Michael usually presents as a young man with an immaculate, composed bearing that contrasts with the oppressive magical presence others perceive from him. His reconstructed Origin Mana body is genuine flesh and blood rather than an aether-made substitute. 91 193

  • Azure or ice-blue eyes, often described as luminous when he mobilizes Mana. 1 107
  • Solidified Mana commonly manifests around him as ribbon-like bands, aurora-like light, or scattered blue particles. 1 112
  • Can dissolve into a hazy shadow or vanish entirely through Displacement Magic. 2 324
  • His presence can induce fear, mental pressure, or the sensation of being pulled into an abyss even through mental-defense equipment. 193 297

Personality

Michael is pragmatic, calculating, and strongly survival-oriented. He avoids wasting effort, favors traps and misdirection over fair fights, and is willing to create puppets, manipulate memories, or frame others if doing so advances his aims. 18 53 213

He is also playful in a cruel and provocative way. He teases allies, bargains aggressively, and enjoys watching arrogant opponents realize they have been outmaneuvered. His malice is often concealed behind relaxed speech and an outwardly courteous demeanor. 263 297 404

Despite this ruthlessness, Michael shows genuine attachment to selected companions and creations. He protects Sajo Aika from threats, worries about Alpha's condition, supports Toneri's decisions, and takes pride in the growth of his disciples—even when that pride is mixed with disappointment and control. 103 107 124 193

Abilities & Skills

Star Core and Origin Mana

Michael's central power source is the Prototype Fifth Tier Star Core, which absorbs ambient Mana and converts it into Origin Mana for his evolution.

  • Can briefly sustain a true Fifth Tier state for one three-millionth of a second. 91
  • Replicated the Root and altered the rules constituting the Apocalypse Beast during that interval. 91
  • Constructed a new physical body from Origin Mana after his prior body dissolved under the Root's pressure. 91
  • Can analyze fragments of Magic and reproduce phenomena such as manifestation from nothing. 46
  • His soul is unusually powerful but especially vulnerable within the Mental Domain, where other souls seek to consume it. 99

Displacement Magic

Michael's signature spatial magecraft lets him reposition himself, evade attacks, and traverse vast distances.

  • Can teleport with the incantation “Mitte (Teleport)”. 1
  • Can cross the Sea of Imaginary Numbers, though doing so severely strains his body even with Dead Apostle-level recovery. 2
  • Uses short-range displacement in combat to bypass defenses, evade Mystic Eyes, and strike from blind spots. 5 324
  • Developed disposable Mage's Garments based on Displacement Manac into permanent cards. 192
  • Can be restricted by specialized interference that disrupts the connection between the Sea of Imaginary Numbers and reality. 38

Magecraft Analysis and Replication

Through the Star Core and his Root analysis, Michael can understand, reproduce, and modify exceptionally complex magecraft.

  • Manifested furniture from nothing after analyzing Moon Oil, a fragment of the First Magic. 46
  • Performed rudimentary time manipulation. 46
  • Reproduced High-Speed Divine Words after analyzing the Root. 145
  • Instantly deciphered and reconstructed Gilgamesh's Ea, including its world-creating Mystery. 283
  • Modified invitations, barriers, and magical tools rather than merely breaking them by force. 99

Alchemy, Soulcraft, and Puppetry

Michael employs alchemy as both a combat discipline and a method of controlling others.

  • Created an alchemical virus that destroyed Fumihito Eiri's vocal cords and enabled his defeat. 18
  • Can perform human transmutation to build bodies from biological material, though he cannot restore the dead to life. 18
  • Uses fragmented souls to create unstable artificial souls for puppet bodies. 18
  • Collects collapsed soul particles from the Mental Domain for soul enhancement and alchemy. 100
  • Created the concept of Demi-Servants by fusing living humans with Unregistered Spirit Foundations. 269

Mental Interference

Michael can influence perception and thought through refined mental magecraft.

  • Erased a civilian driver's memory after escaping through the Sea of Imaginary Numbers. 2
  • Uses Suggestion Magecraft to pressure or manipulate targets without obvious Mana fluctuations. 14 155
  • Aozaki Aoko successfully resisted his Suggestion, demonstrating that the ability is not absolute. 14
  • His gaze can cause severe terror and induce bodily mutation in weaker targets such as Dawn. 297

Dead Apostle Physiology and Combat

Even before his later transformation, Michael possessed speed, durability, regeneration, and physical strength beyond modern magi.

  • Moves fast enough to create sonic booms and cross a forest before combat constructs can react. 4
  • Can shatter magecraft bindings with physical force alone. 15
  • Uses close-quarters combat, projected weapons, firearms, and Mana-enhanced strikes interchangeably. 4 52
  • His former Dead Apostle status is a deliberate tactical deception: anti-Dead Apostle measures such as the Lord's blessing fail against his current non-Dead Apostle form. 213 347
  • Modern magecraft can be suppressed by beings capable of restoring the Age of Gods, forcing Michael to retreat or rely on alchemy and preparation. 13

Servant Summoning and Spirit Foundations

Michael possesses extensive knowledge of the Holy Grail system and the Throne of Heroes.

  • Modified the Greater Grail to support the summoning of fourteen Servants. 196
  • Directly summoned Paracelsus using a Philosopher's Stone as a catalyst. 198
  • Provided Kischurche with a catalyst to summon Arash. 198
  • Can copy a Servant's Spirit Origin through his Mage's Garment cards and overlay Heroic Spirit power onto himself. 192
  • Pursues Spiritual Transfer research partly to study and counter the Throne of Heroes. 113

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Tear of the Goddess — A fist-sized teardrop sapphire charged from a Ley Line. Its stored Mana could sustain Michael for roughly one month without spellcasting; detonating it would be comparable to ten thousand tons of TNT. 1
  • Imaginary Pocket / Void Storage — Spatial storage used for weapons, alchemical materials, captives, and even his original soulless body. 5 265 294
  • Cross Longsword — An ancient projected sword that produces milky-white flames and can incinerate constructs. 4 5
  • Balmung — A weapon used during his battle against Merlin and the King of the Continent. 40
  • Displacement Manac Cards — Permanent Mage's Garments capable of copying Servant Spirit Origins. 192
  • Holy Burial Canon — An anti-Dead Apostle hand cannon recovered from Anshas after his defeat. 422
  • Modern firearms — Used efficiently against groups of Dead Apostles. 52

Relationships

  • Sajo Aika — His fiancée and, during the Tokyo Holy Grail War, his Master. Her connection provides him effectively limitless Mana, while Michael is openly protective of her. 54 96 107
  • Merlin Solomon — Initially hunted Michael as a Burial Agency-affiliated Progenitor. Michael defeated him to become the twentieth Progenitor; they later cooperate through the Tarot Society and joint hunts. 38 97 264
  • Aozaki Aoko — Began as a hostile encounter during the conflict over Misaki's Ley Line. Michael later trained, traveled with, and supported her in multiple incidents. 4 21 46 565
  • Aozaki Tōko — A dangerous old acquaintance and recurring rival. Both understand the other's duplicity, yet continue trading information, favors, and barbed conversation. 12 18 404
  • Marisbury Animusphere — Michael's former disciple and Chaldea's later head. Michael monitored him through Chaldea's remaining circuits, judged his betrayal, and had him assassinated through controlled researchers. 103 104
  • Kischurche Vordem — His disciple. Michael accepted him for the Vordem alliance and supplied him with a catalyst to summon Arash. 196 198
  • Toneri — A close ally from the Britain Lostbelt. Michael protects and encourages her while providing Mana when she overextends herself. 124 147
  • Paracelsus — A trusted but subordinate collaborator whose research Michael supports and directs. 60 198
  • Michael's Shadow — A formless extension of Michael's will that serves as his eyes in Chaldea and carries out his orders. 103
  • Sedwick Ashborn — Michael's illegitimate son and Grivan's selected successor. 630

Story Role / Major Arcs

Misaki City Conflict

Michael enters Misaki seeking control of its Ley Line, choosing to eliminate its controller rather than dismantle the network. He defeats Alice Kuonji's constructs and familiars, wounds and captures Alice, then becomes entangled with Aozaki Aoko and Tōko Aozaki. 3 4 5

His conflict with Tōko escalates into a battle involving the Golden Wolf, hostile dolls, and a Phantasmal Species that can suppress modern magecraft by restoring the Age of Gods. The crisis culminates in Michael activating the Star Core against Merlin's King of the Continent. 13 35 39 41

Tokyo Holy Grail War

Michael enters a parallel-world Holy Grail War to study the Root and the rules of the world. He uses Dead Apostles as bait to expose Masters and Servants, forms hidden arrangements with Paracelsus, and becomes connected to Sajo Aika as her Servant. 48 53 54 60

At the Greater Grail, he activates Star-Forged Armament, replicates the Root, modifies the Apocalypse Beast's structure, and creates his Origin Mana body. 91

Clock Tower and Chaldea Politics

As Lord Animusphere, Michael teaches at the Clock Tower while navigating factional politics around the Spaulding/Sbolde Awakening Ritual, the Mental Domain, and the Moon Elixir. He leverages his status as The Fool to negotiate with Lords while pursuing his own interests. 96 98 110 112

At Chaldea, Michael discovers Marisbury's concealed preparations against him. He gives Marisbury the Quicksilver Blade as a “graduation gift” before arranging his death through researchers under Michael's control. 103 104

Britain Lostbelt

Michael travels through Britain alongside Toneri, fighting Moss outbreaks, investigating the coming Calamity, and assisting in the defense and evacuation of Darlington. He identifies the linear pattern of the Moss attacks and deduces that Manchester is the swarm's target. 124 141 145

After two thousand years in the Lostbelt, Michael returns to Proper Human History only four to five years later by its own time flow. 191

Babel Tower Holy Grail War

Michael reveals himself to Kiritsugu Emiya as The Fool and brings him to Babel Tower, a BT Group stronghold whose partial Otherworldization suppresses unauthorized magi. He alters the Greater Grail system, recruits Servants, and treats the war's outcome as less interesting than the process itself. 196 198

Primate Murder Hunt

Michael joins Merlin, Dawn, and eventually Lorelei Bartholomew's force against the seventh Progenitor, Primate Murder Anash. He secures a temporary agreement with Lorelei by emphasizing his Animusphere identity rather than his Dead Apostle title. 297 305 307

Later Investigations

Michael participates in hunts and investigations involving Dimitri Stachira, the Ryōgi family, the Katori Town murder case, and the Spiral of Contradictions incidents.
