Background
Aozaki inheritance
Tōko was raised from birth as the intended heir to the Aozaki family’s Magic, isolated and educated as an “egg of a Magic User.” Despite exceptional Mage Circuits and a reputation as a genius, her grandfather revoked her qualification at age eighteen and named her younger sister, Aoko, as heir instead. 360
Her grandfather believed Tōko lacked the particular talent required to inherit the Fifth Magic, despite her aptitude for magecraft. His decision deliberately set the sisters on a path toward conflict. 360
During the aftermath of the announcement, Fumihito Eiri attacked Tōko’s grandfather. Although Tōko attempted to stop him, the event was widely believed to have been Tōko’s own act of rage, leaving a lasting stain on her relationship with the Aozaki family. 360 361
Pursuit of the human archetype
After leaving the family, Tōko spent years attempting to reclaim the Magic from Aoko. She ultimately failed, attained an extraordinarily high level of magecraft, and abandoned the goal of reaching the Root through conventional magus pursuits. 361
Her research instead focused on the Perfect Human Archetype through doll-making. In the process, she developed a technique that created a puppet completely identical to herself—an achievement considered impossible under a foundational law of medieval magecraft. She discarded her original body and transferred her soul and consciousness into an identical vessel. 292 310
Sealing Designation
Tōko’s identical-body technique led Inolai and the Clock Tower’s Lords to unanimously propose her for Sealing Designation. Rather than resist directly, she arranged funding and an exchange of her puppet-making techniques with Michael, then fled the Sealing Designation Bureau’s enforcers. 292 293
Appearance
Tōko is a mature-looking woman with Eastern features, red-orange hair, and a composed, intellectual presentation. Her hair has been described as long and orange as well as short and crimson, consistent with her use of replacement bodies. 292 667
- Black half-rim glasses, often used as a visible part of her controlled, intellectual demeanor 292 361
- Orange earrings set with small diamonds; their Rune Script helped restore her memories within the Katori Town mental world 292 360
- Frequently carries and lights slim ladies’ cigarettes with magecraft 11 314
- Wears a brown trench coat fashioned as a personal Mystic Code when expecting combat 313
Personality
Tōko is calm, observant, and sharply calculating. She can negotiate casually while assessing a situation’s risks, such as when she set increasingly demanding terms for Atlas Galiasta’s request to delay Aoko. 676
Her outward politeness often conceals mockery, hostility, or lethal intent. She treats Cornelius Alba with open contempt, dismisses his ambitions as flashy nonsense, and reacts violently to the title “The Crimson of Pain.” 310 433 434
She is independent to the point of rejecting the goals others laid out for her. After confronting the memories of her family’s manipulation, she resolved never again to be used as her grandfather’s chess piece. 361
Tōko also has a playful, teasing streak, particularly toward Aoko and Michael. Despite their fractured relationship, she retains concern for Aoko and once acted as a dependable older sister who listened to and advised her. 293 361 684
Abilities & Skills
Puppetry and replacement bodies
Tōko’s foremost discipline is doll-making, particularly the manufacture of human-equivalent bodies.
- Created a puppet body completely identical to herself, surpassing the medieval restriction against making a puppet identical to a human 292
- Transfers her soul and consciousness between identical vessels, allowing her to resume functioning after a body is destroyed 432 433
- States that every identical body is a genuine instance of Tōko Aozaki rather than an imitation 433
- Produces custom bodies, limbs, and combat-capable dolls for clients 293 368
- Works with synthetic materials that support artificial muscles, nervous systems, and the installation of Mage Circuits 372
- Can attach the power of Mystic Eyes to a puppet 35
Rune magecraft
Tōko is an Archmage proficient in Rune Script. 11
- Prepared Shamaki Park with indeterminate Rune Script that only revealed itself after contact with powerful magical energy 32
- Turned the park into a mystical “daytime” domain with a massive spell composed of approximately 300,000 runic characters, neutralizing Alice Kuonji’s night-dependent magecraft 32 33
- Uses Rune Script on personal items, including her earrings 360
- Formed a massive Yggdrasil-like tree from Rune Script to dissolve the Katori Town mental world 361
Mystic Eyes
Tōko possesses multiple Mystic Eyes and can employ them in combat.
- Broke through Alice Kuonji’s Mystic Eye binding with her own ability 32
- Used Mystic Eyes through a puppet to immobilize Alice’s pig Familiars 35
- Her Mystic Eyes were ineffective against the colossal Bridge Giant, prompting her to concede the immediate confrontation 33
Shadow Familiar
Tōko can create a feline Shadow Familiar through projection magecraft.
- Appears as a two-dimensional cat-shaped darkness with Egyptian hieroglyphs for eyes 314
- Can swallow physical attacks, including an information-magecraft-enhanced bullet 316
- Continuously regenerates as long as the original projection machine remains intact 314
- Was deployed against “Teacher Sakamoto” at Miki Middle School 314
Combat puppets and allies
Tōko supplements her own magecraft with powerful constructs and allies.
- Deployed a humanoid mercury-based puppet derived from Moon Cell Liquid against Cornelius Alba 419
- Used a mercury Giant Eagle with high magic resistance; it could ignore binding magecraft, smash barriers, and resist cursing magecraft 420
- Keeps Beowulf, the Golden Wolf, as a Garan no Dō ally and emergency combat asset 434
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Brown trench-coat Mystic Code — Provides physical resistance, wards off some curses, and can negate two spells before its defensive barrier fails 313 420
- Orange half-rim glasses — A treasured personal item associated with her past and her decision to reject her grandfather’s control 361
- Orange runic earrings — Restored her memories through a combination of Rune Script and impact 360
- Mercury-based puppet material — Derived from Moon Cell Liquid and used for high-performance combat puppets 419
- Cigarettes — A habitual accessory which she can ignite with a snap of her fingers 11 314
Relationships
- Aozaki Aoko — Younger sister and former rival for the Aozaki family’s Magic. Their estrangement followed Tōko’s removal as heir, though both retain traces of familial concern beneath their antagonism. 360 361 683 684
- Michael Stefan Animusphere — An old acquaintance defined by mutual scheming, verbal sparring, and transactional cooperation. Michael informed her of the Sealing Designation, financially aided her escape, and acquired her puppet-making techniques. 11 292 293
- Alice Kuonji — A hostile rival in Misaki City. Tōko carefully countered Alice’s Night’s Feast and regarded her as a serious opponent rather than a child. 32 33
- Cornelius Alba — A bitter rival who destroyed Tōko’s workshop and killed one of her bodies. Tōko later confronted him through a replacement vessel; Beowulf killed him after he invoked Tōko’s forbidden title. 432 433 434
- Ryougi Shiki — Garan no Dō associate. Tōko coordinated with Shiki during the assault on Ogawa Apartments, with Tōko facing Cornelius while Shiki confronted Souren Araya. 432 433
- Beowulf / Beo — Phantasmal Species and Garan no Dō ally whom Tōko summoned through a Teleportation Array as backup against Cornelius. 434
- Inolai — Tōko’s teacher, who took pride in her breakthrough in puppet research while still supporting her preservation through Sealing Designation. 292 294
- Fumihito Eiri — Tōko’s teacher and a central figure in the memory of her grandfather’s attempted assassination. 360
- Senka Kiritsugu and Asagami Fujino — Students whom Tōko teaches magecraft, while warning them that entering the hidden world of mystery permanently changes one’s life. 408 367
- Tsibiah El Nahat Atla Aias — Head of the Atlas Institute, who uses a puppet body made by Tōko. 553
Story Role / Major Arcs
Misaki City conflict
Tōko first appears in Misaki City as Michael’s magical rival, meeting him during a Pachinko contest fought through magecraft. Their cordial conversation masks mutual intentions to exploit or eliminate the other. 10 11
She becomes an enemy of Aoko and Alice while pursuing Misaki City’s spiritual land. Tōko attacks through dolls, controls stray dogs, dismantles barrier anchors, and uses her extensive preparation to establish tactical dominance. 12 31 32
Her battle with Alice demonstrates her ability to alter terrain and magical conditions, though Alice’s preparation allows the Bridge Giant to destroy Tōko’s artificial “sun” and force her surrender. 32 33
Sealing Designation and escape
Following the Fourth Holy Grail War, Tōko’s identical-puppet breakthrough results in a unanimous Sealing Designation proposal from the Clock Tower’s Lords. She sells her techniques to Michael for financial support and flees before the Bureau can seize her. 292 293
Garan no Dō and Ogawa Apartments
Tōko returns to active work in Kanbōzi City, confronts “Teacher Sakamoto” with her Shadow Familiar, and continues teaching younger magi. 314 408
When Cornelius Alba attacks, he destroys the Garan no Dō office and kills one of Tōko’s bodies. Tōko reappears through a spare vessel, reveals the nature of her manufactured existence, and confronts Cornelius alongside Beowulf and Ryougi Shiki. 432 433 434
Izeluma incident
At Twin-Faced Tower Izeluma, Tōko joins El-Melloi II’s faction in backing Animusphere during the investigation into the Golden Princess’s death. She assists Aoko and Olga Marie in examining Tiadra’s staged murder. 667 668
Atlas Galiasta later hires Tōko to delay Aoko during his operation against Animusphere. Tōko accepts for payment rather than loyalty to Atlas, openly framing the arrangement as a practical contract. 676 677 684
Notable Quotes
“Because I am Tōko Aozaki!” 361
“What a boring question, Cornelius. That question has no meaning whatsoever to me.” 433
“I’m not on Atlas Galli Michael’s side. He simply offered me a very good price to hold back a certain renowned Magic User.” 684
Trivia
- A standard identical puppet body costs Tōko roughly 20 million pounds, while failed research and materials pushed some bodies’ effective cost to 50 million pounds. 293
- Tōko’s self-identical puppet technique is valuable enough that the Mage’s Association sought to preserve her as a Sealing Designation specimen. 292
- Tsibiah El Nahat Atla Aias’s current body is one of Tōko’s puppets. 553
