Background
Saigo identified Sun Wukong as a Saiyan named Kakarot and entrusted Grandpa Gohan with raising and training him on Earth. Saigo specifically warned Gohan not to let Wukong see a full moon, while also instructing him to teach the child literacy, arithmetic, moral judgment, and martial-arts fundamentals. 73
The warning proved necessary when Wukong saw a full moon and transformed into a mindless Great Ape. He fought Grandpa Gohan, severely overwhelming him, until Saigo used Mental Enhancement to restore Wukong's sanity. Wukong then learned that the “monster” Gohan had warned him about was his own Saiyan transformation. 116 118
Afterward, Wukong accepted Korin's offer of Ultra Divine Water despite a stated ninety-percent risk of death. He survived the ordeal, recovered his dormant training talent, and pledged to repay Saigo and Korin by completing Saigo's tasks. 123 124
Saigo's first task was for Wukong to build a relationship with Chi-Chi; his second was to bring Krillin from Orin Temple so that Krillin could become his junior disciple. The latter mission exposed Wukong's poor sense of direction and tendency to trust strangers, as he was deceived into bringing back an impostor. 126 152 162
Wukong later met Turles, his older half-brother, and immediately proposed a sparring match. Following extended training and instruction from Saigo, the brothers returned to Planet Saiyan, where Wukong reunited with Bardock and Gine. He accepted Saigo's role in sending him to Earth without resentment, choosing to value the family and life he had gained there. 174 178 188 191
During the Dragon Ball journey on Earth, Wukong joined Bulma in gathering the Dragon Balls in hopes of reviving Turles's mother, Modosi. He successfully summoned Shenron, but the dragon could not fulfill the revival wish under its conditions. 415 420 437 438
Appearance
Sun Wukong resembles an Earthling in ordinary appearance but possesses the defining Saiyan brown tail, which he can coil around his waist. 73 421
- Has a brown Saiyan tail. 73
- Closely resembles Bardock and Turles, despite being smaller and fairer than Turles. 174 191
- Can be temporarily changed into an adult appearance resembling Turles through Saigo's Ruyi Transformation Technique. 416
- His Great Ape form has enormous size, scarlet eyes, and the ability to fire red energy beams. 116
Personality
Wukong is intensely battle-driven and treats training as an enjoyment rather than an obligation. He eagerly seeks out strong opponents, studies useful techniques, and can remain completely focused on martial arts for long periods. 87 174 176
His desire for strength is tied to both combat and protection. Even while afraid of death, he drank Ultra Divine Water because he wanted the power to protect Grandpa Gohan and the people he cared about, as well as to meet stronger opponents. 123
Grandpa Gohan's upbringing made this version of Wukong notably polite, educated, and capable of distinguishing good from evil. However, he remains naive in social situations, often speaks without thinking, trusts strangers too readily, and has little instinctive understanding of romance. 124 152 162 189 422
Wukong also values fair competition. After surpassing Turles, he refused to exploit his advantage and asked Saigo to give Limit-Breaking Fruits to his fellow disciples so that any future victory would be earned under equal conditions. 417 467
