Background / History

Goku was one of three Saiyans born in the same room on Planet Vegeta, alongside Wang Yang and Broly. His birth combat power was only 2, and he was sent to Earth because of it; Wang Yang identifies him as a low-class Saiyan. 27 42

He arrived on Earth in a space pod and became known as Son Goku. Kami later removed his tail because it was considered a weakness that interfered with his fighting. 26 27

At some point before Wang Yang’s arrival on Earth, Goku defeated King Piccolo and gained recognition as the world’s strongest person. 24

Appearance

Goku has distinctive crab-like hair and a lean build. He later wears an orange martial-arts uniform while training on King Kai’s Planet. 26 40

Personality

He is exceptionally stubborn about fighting his own battles. When King Piccolo severely injures him through a sneak attack, Goku refuses Wang Yang’s offer of help and insists on winning alone. 31

Despite his training obsession, Goku cares deeply for his family. He misses Chi-Chi and Gohan while staying with King Kai, though he delays returning because travel from King Kai’s Planet is difficult. 40 His poor control over his own strength can create problems, as he accidentally sends Chi-Chi flying with a light pat. 49

Goku meets Wang Yang at the tournament and learns that he is a Saiyan from Planet Vegeta, with Kakarot being his original name. 26 27 He witnesses Wang Yang’s fights against Shen, Tien Shinhan, and King Piccolo, using them to study Wang Yang’s combat style. 28 30 31

After defeating King Piccolo, Goku faces Wang Yang in the final. Though he matches Wang Yang in speed and exchanges powerful techniques with him, Wang Yang exploits every opening and defeats him by ring-out. 32

Training Under King Kai

Motivated by his loss, Goku trains relentlessly and repeatedly challenges Wang Yang, though he remains slightly behind. Wang Yang eventually directs him to Kami, who sends him to train under King Kai. 33

Following two years of training on King Kai’s Planet, Goku displays King Kai’s Fist against Wang Yang. Even at fivefold and tenfold amplification, he cannot decisively overcome Wang Yang, who remains composed after the spar. 40 41

Saiyan Invasion

When Vegeta and Nappa attack Earth, Goku returns with Wang Yang through Instant Transmission. 41 He agrees to let Gohan and Wang Sheng face the invaders first, but insists that the risk of permanent deaths must be considered. 41
