Background / History

Son Goku meets Ye Ming shortly after the latter arrives in Universe 7. Though immediately alert to Ye Ming’s immense ki, Goku senses no hostility and introduces himself with a request to spar. He is unconcerned by Ye Ming’s unexplained origins so long as Earth is not threatened. 1

He trains with Ye Ming in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, escalating from Super Saiyan through Super Saiyan 3 when Ye Ming’s rapidly developing strength surpasses his lower forms. Rather than being discouraged, Goku is exhilarated by Ye Ming’s adaptability and power. 2 3

After three years of joint training, Goku and Ye Ming become close enough to openly discuss the dangerous forces approaching Earth. Goku responds to the warning of Beerus’s arrival with excitement at the prospect of facing a powerful opponent. 6

Goku is intensely battle-driven. He challenges Beerus despite Vegeta’s warnings and Beerus’s explicit statement that people could die, because he wants to measure the gap between himself and the universe’s strongest god. 8

He is trusting and open toward fellow fighters, quickly accepting Ye Ming after sensing his lack of malice. His battles are driven not only by the wish to improve, but also by a desire to protect Earth, his family, and his comrades. Those thoughts help him awaken Ultra Instinct Sign against AF Son Goku. 1 26 27

Goku is also unusually bold around higher beings. After Lord Zeno reprimands Beerus and Champa for their private tournament, Goku directly requests a larger Universal Martial Arts Tournament. 32
