Background / History

Planet Vegeta was originally called Planet Plant and was inhabited by the Tuffles, a physically frail but highly intelligent and technologically advanced people. The Saiyans arrived on the planet, transformed into Great Apes during a full moon, and exterminated the Tuffles before taking possession of their world and technology. King Vegeta renamed it Planet Vegeta after becoming the first Saiyan king. 8

Under King Vegeta, the planet served as the Saiyans' homeworld and the base of a warrior race employed as mercenaries by the Frieza Force. The Saiyans resented Frieza's exploitation and increasingly disobeyed his orders, while King Vegeta secretly planned to overthrow him and establish Saiyans as the universe's strongest race. 7

Frieza arrived with his fleet ostensibly to secure Saiyan loyalty and form a dedicated Saiyan squad. He tasked Mu Chuan with taking control of the planet and forcing its inhabitants to submit, while King Vegeta supplied imprisoned low-class Saiyan criminals for Mu Chuan's new legion. 8 9 11

Rebellion and Destruction

Mu Chuan's attempt to take over the planet drove King Vegeta into open rebellion. King Vegeta created an Artificial Moon, causing Saiyans across the planet to transform into Great Apes and attack the Frieza Force. Most low-level Saiyans lost their reason during the transformation, while high-class warriors retained control. 12 13

King Vegeta confronted Frieza in Great Ape form with a combat power of 100,000, but Frieza easily deflected his attack and revealed a combat power of 540,000. Bardock attempted to stop Frieza's final attack but could not prevent it. 13

Frieza launched a massive purple energy sphere into the planet's core. Cracks spread across the surface before Planet Vegeta exploded, killing the Saiyans still on it and leaving only dust in its place. Mu Chuan's squad survived because it had already evacuated by spacecraft. 14

Society and Technology

• Saiyans were divided at birth into elite, middle-class, and low-class warriors according to genes and initial power levels, though Mu Chuan considered this system inaccurate because training could unlock greater potential. 9
• The planet retained Tuffle technology after the Saiyan conquest, allowing equipment such as gravity chambers to be manufactured despite Saiyan technological limitations. 8 11
• Saiyans could create Artificial Moons to trigger Great Ape transformations, multiplying their combat power tenfold. 12 13
• Planet Vegeta maintained prisons for violent Saiyan criminals, most of whom were low-class warriors with combat powers between 1,600 and 2,300. 9 10
