Background / History

When Mu Chuan and his Saiyan squad arrived on Earth, Popo and the Guardian sensed their overwhelming energy from the Heavenly Temple. Popo recognized their tails as resembling that of a previous Earth visitor, but initially feared that the group had come to invade the planet. 32

Mu Chuan brought the Saiyans to the Heavenly Temple and requested Popo's instruction in ki control. Popo agreed to teach them after securing Mu Chuan's promise to protect Earth should it face danger. 33

Popo began the Saiyans' training by having them meditate and sense their own ki. To demonstrate the value of this discipline, he concealed his presence from Greta and the other Saiyans despite standing near them, convincing the group that ki control could overcome their reliance on raw combat power. 34

While Mu Chuan trained in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, Popo continued overseeing the Saiyans' progress. He observed Cal become the first among them to sense ki and later confirmed that the group had mastered its control well enough to begin adapting it for practical use. 36 37

Popo remained at the Heavenly Temple through Frieza's pursuit of the Saiyans. He sensed Mu Chuan's transformations and distant clashes with Frieza, then witnessed Mu Chuan return after defeating the Emperor of the Universe. 38 43 49

Although physically far weaker than the Saiyans, Popo is composed and quietly confident in his knowledge of ki. He does not argue at length with the skeptical Saiyans; instead, he demonstrates the practical effect of concealing his presence and lets them experience their own inability to detect him. 34

He values alliances that can safeguard Earth. Popo and the Guardian support Mu Chuan's training because they recognize both the danger of the wider universe and the protection that a friendship with him could provide. 35 36
