Background / History

The Saiyans settled on Planet Plant, whose original inhabitants were the technologically advanced but physically weak Tuffles. During full moons, the Saiyans' Great Ape transformations enabled them to devastate the planet and exterminate the Tuffles. They then claimed the world as their own, renamed it Planet Vegeta after King Vegeta, and inherited Tuffle technology. 8

Saiyan society divides warriors at birth into elite, middle, and low classes according to genes and initial power. King Vegeta's elite warriors considered low-class Saiyans expendable, despite the race's capacity to improve dramatically through training. 9

Under Frieza's control, the Saiyans served as mercenaries while secretly resenting his authority. King Vegeta eventually initiated a rebellion by creating an Artificial Moon, allowing Saiyans across Planet Vegeta to transform into Great Apes. Frieza crushed the revolt and destroyed the planet, leaving Mu Chuan's squad among the few surviving Saiyans. 13 14

The survivors were retained as Frieza Force mercenaries, then departed to train at the edge of the universe under Mu Chuan. His gravity training, repeated sparring, and instruction in Great Ape Power allowed formerly imprisoned low-class warriors to grow far beyond their original limits. 15 17 20

After defeating Cooler's Armored Squadron, the squad traveled to Earth to learn ki control. Under Popo's guidance at the Heavenly Temple, the Saiyans rapidly learned to sense and manipulate ki, then continued their growth through the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. 25 34 37 50
