Background / History

Mangetsu was a Hōzuki Clan prodigy from Kirigakure, known as the second wielder of Hiramekarei and a youth capable of using all Seven Ninja Swords of the Mist. At roughly sixteen or seventeen, he was already a Kirigakure jōnin, but was outmatched when Orochimaru cornered him while seeking the Hōzuki Clan’s Hydrification Technique. 1 3

During the encounter, a lightning strike interrupted Mangetsu’s Hydrification Technique and left him comatose. Gu Mangetsu, a Naruto fan from another world, then transmigrated into his body and merged with his memories. To survive Orochimaru, the new Mangetsu exchanged the Hydrification Technique and intelligence on the ninja world for cooperation, later trading the secret of the Mangekyō Sharingan’s awakening for a Kusanagi Sword. 2 3 4

Upon returning to Kirigakure, Mangetsu discovered that Suikazan Fuguki had leaked his whereabouts to Orochimaru in an attempt to remove him. He defeated Kisame Hoshigaki and Fuguki’s Anbu at the village gate, then accepted Terumi Mei’s alliance rather than repeat the original Mangetsu’s implied fate of being eliminated in Kirigakure’s political struggle. 5 7

Mangetsu rebuilt influence around himself by accepting Chōjūrō as a disciple, retrieving the Giant Clam contract and clan techniques from the Hōzuki shrine, defeating Raiga Kurosuki, and recruiting Ranmaru. He later exploited Orochimaru’s clash with Uchiha Shisui to steal Shisui’s eyes and frame Orochimaru and Danzō for the incident. 8 11 15

While seeking strength beyond Kirigakure, Mangetsu stole and sealed Hoshigakure’s Ten-Tails fragment, acquired Hashirama’s cells from Orochimaru, and secured Amachi’s cooperation. He subsequently transplanted Shisui’s Sharingan and used implanted genjutsu to establish direct control over Chūkichi and Amachi. 17 28 30 43 44

Within Kirigakure, Mangetsu positioned himself between Suikazan Fuguki’s and Terumi Mei’s factions. His arguments delayed an immediate war with Konoha, earning the Neutral Faction’s attention. He later recruited Momochi Zabuza into the Seven Ninja Swordsmen, protected him from Fuguki’s forces, and gained Harusame’s factional support after defending Kirigakure from Utakata’s Tailed Beast Bomb. 21 25 45 50

Mangetsu is a long-haired teenage ninja with a face that still retains some childishness. He wears standard ninja attire and a Kirigakure forehead protector. 1

Personality

Mangetsu is intensely pragmatic and survival-driven. After transmigrating, he abandons a direct confrontation with Orochimaru in favor of bargaining, repeatedly using intelligence, rare techniques, and political leverage to secure advantages from stronger opponents. 2 4

He pursues power openly, seeking Shisui’s eyes, Hashirama’s cells, the Ten-Tails fragment, and techniques that could elevate him beyond his original quasi-Kage potential. His long-term ambition is to accumulate enough strength, followers, and accomplishments to compete for the position of Mizukage. 3 17 19

Despite his manipulative methods, Mangetsu is capable of genuine mentorship and attachment. He gives the Kusanagi Sword to his younger brother, trains Chōjūrō and Ranmaru, protects Zabuza, and refuses to evade Utakata’s Tailed Beast Bomb because doing so would endanger Kirigakure. 6 8 11 45 49
