Background / History

Shisui was an elite Uchiha and one of the few clan members whose perspective extended beyond the clan itself. He disclosed his Mangekyo Sharingan to Konoha’s leadership, though the wider Uchiha Clan did not know of it. His ocular abilities were therefore treated as a top-level village secret. 18

While leading a squad near Konoha’s border, Shisui drove off a Kirigakure reconnaissance team with Sharingan genjutsu. The Mist operatives had been manipulated into serving as explosive traps, however, and Orochimaru used the resulting chaos to ambush Shisui’s squad. Two of Shisui’s comrades were killed, while a third was captured and badly injured. 12 13

Shisui refused to abandon his surviving teammate. He treated the chunin’s broken leg, ordered him to seek reinforcements, and returned alone to delay Orochimaru. 13

During the ensuing battle, Shisui awakened his Mangekyo Sharingan and manifested Susanoo. When Orochimaru’s Eight-Headed Serpent overwhelmed his defenses, he used Kotoamatsukami to force Orochimaru into sleep, but the technique left his eyes weakened and temporarily unavailable. Gu Mangetsu then emerged from hiding and seized Shisui’s eyes. 14 15

A fabricated illusion later convinced Konoha Anbu that Shisui had been taken by Root and Orochimaru. His body was never recovered, fueling political suspicion between Konoha’s leadership, Root, Orochimaru, and the Uchiha Clan. 15 17 18

Personality

Shisui is fiercely loyal to Konoha and his comrades. Even after Orochimaru had killed two members of his squad and captured another, Shisui chose rescue and protection over retreat. 13

He is confident in his abilities and willing to confront overwhelming opponents directly. However, he can recognize an enemy’s preparation and adjust his approach, shifting from genjutsu to nintaijutsu when Orochimaru neutralized his initial ocular techniques. 13
