Background

Zabuza was born a commoner in Kirigakure during the Bloody Mist era. At age nine, he slaughtered every student in his graduating class—most of them children of major clans—earning his fearsome reputation as a “Demon” and deepening the village’s conflict between commoner and clan ninja. He also killed Terumi Mei’s younger brother during that graduation massacre. 22 23 46

As a commoner, Zabuza had little path into Kirigakure’s clan-dominated political positions. He therefore sought advancement through the Seven Ninja Swordsmen, whose challenge-based selection favored individual strength over birth. 24

Before obtaining Nuibari, Zabuza was aligned with Suikazan Fuguki’s commoner faction alongside Kisame Hoshigaki and supported Fuguki’s proposal to attack Konoha. 20 22

Appearance

Zabuza is described as a tall figure. After becoming a Seven Ninja Swordsman, he is consistently identified by the oversized steel needle-like sword Nuibari. 44

Personality

Zabuza is intensely ambitious, blunt, and combative. He challenged Hozuki Mangetsu directly for the position of a Seven Ninja Swordsman, refusing to accept the limitations that Kirigakure’s social hierarchy placed on civilian-born ninja. 24

Initially shaped by the Bloody Mist belief that ninja exist only as killing tools, Zabuza places great value on strength and accepts death as the cost of defeat. Mangetsu’s recognition changes his outlook: he begins to understand loyalty, trust, and contribution to the village as motivations beyond slaughter. 25 45 47

He is deeply loyal once he accepts someone as a benefactor. After Mangetsu grants him Nuibari and later rescues him from Kisame’s ambush, Zabuza pledges his life to Mangetsu. 26 45
