Background

Hashirama is Senju Butsuma's son and Tobirama's older brother. He was arranged to marry Mito Uzumaki while still young, an alliance consistent with the Senju and Uzumaki clans' distant family ties. 3

Although Butsuma initially considered Hashirama somewhat cowardly, Hashirama's awakening of Wood Style made him the clan's prospective leader under its succession rules. His father subsequently placed him on the battlefield despite his age, intending to force his rapid growth. 8 15 20

Appearance

Hashirama is described as a youthful, watermelon-headed boy in his early appearance. Another description depicts him with brown hair and a cross-shaped scar on the right side of his face, received during training at age three. 3 8

Personality

Hashirama is notably kind, patient, and sincere. He responds gently to Madara's frustration during their first meeting and chooses not to treat a potential enemy as one without cause. 40

He can also be naïve and emotionally expressive. He is easily dejected when he believes he has failed as an older brother, yet he immediately reveals that he had been pretending in order to fool Hiugo. 3 His attachment to Hiugo is intense enough that he mistakes a disguised double for a kidnapped Hiugo and beats the impersonator in anger. 42

Hashirama is driven by an ideal of ending the cycle of clan hatred. He believes enemies can become friends and remains committed to that vision even after Madara rejects it. 41 46

Meeting Madara

Before another war begins, Hashirama meets Madara at a riverside while both are skipping stones. A Hagoromo corpse floating downstream warns them that the area is becoming a battlefield, yet neither boy attacks the other despite recognizing clues to the other's identity. 40

Pursuit of Peace

After training with Hiugo, Hashirama reveals his wish to achieve true peace beyond what the Senju Clan alone can accomplish. Hiugo encourages him to uphold his convictions and begins maneuvering to replace Butsuma with Hashirama as clan head. 41

Black Feather Ambush

Hashirama is sent on a mission based on false Black Feather Clan intelligence and is surrounded by Uchiha ninja. He uses Wood Armor to break through their initial encirclement but is injured and ultimately saved when Hiugo arrives. 43

Severance from Madara

During the Senju–Uchiha confrontation, Madara awakens the Three-Tomoe Sharingan and declares their friendship over, blaming the longstanding hatred between their clans and Hiugo's earlier conflict with Izuna. Hashirama refuses to abandon their shared dream. 46
