Background / History
Four thousand years after its defeat in a war against the Douluo Continent’s powers, the Sun Moon Empire remains strategically disadvantaged against the three empires. Its superiority in Soul Tools has nevertheless allowed it to preserve its scale and contend with the Star Luo and Heaven Dou Empires. 38
The empire’s technological advantage is rooted in Mingde Hall, its premier Soul Tool research and manufacturing center, and in its control of rare-metal resources. It restricts raw-material exports rather than Soul Tool sales, keeping rival states dependent on scarce and prohibitively expensive metals. 38
Its Soul Master development has historically constrained its highest-end research: the empire had not produced a native Super Douluo for four thousand years, hindering work on Level 9 and theoretical Level 10 Soul Tools. 38 By the present era, however, Mu En states that the empire possesses at least twenty Level 9 Soul Masters and formidable Soul Tools in their hands. 115
The Holy Spirit Cult established a foundation within the empire more than five hundred years earlier. Although Mu En initially describes their cooperation as limited, later assessments regard the Cult’s alliance with the empire as a major shift in continental power, compensating for the empire’s shortage of top-tier Soul Masters. 104 131
Technology and Military Capacity
Soul Tool Industry
- Mingde Hall is described as the continent’s highest-level Soul Tool research and manufacturing center. 38
- The empire’s Level 3 Soul Barriers are normally superior to comparable devices elsewhere, though Shrek Academy develops a barrier whose materials, Core Array inscription, and layout alarm Jing Hongchen. 38
- It permits some high-level Soul Tools to reach foreign buyers, partly because their complex and non-mainstream techniques can misdirect outside research efforts. 38
- Level 9 Soul Tools are rarely exported because their creators treat them as personal treasures. 38
- Ming Capital contains Soul Tools powerful enough that Mu En, a Limit Douluo, believes they could threaten his life. 104
Resources and Technological Blockade
- The empire possesses more rare-metal veins than the Douluo Continent and has more advanced prospecting and refining techniques. 135
- Its export controls are intended to prevent rival nations from mass-deploying advanced Soul Tools. 38
- Smuggling weakens these restrictions, but the empire’s faster research pace remains a critical advantage. 77
- Its technological superiority is considered vital to national survival; Jing Hongchen fears that losing this edge would leave the empire vulnerable to collapse. 38
Military Forces
- The empire fields Soul Engineer Legions, which are central to its ability to seize targets and project force. 128 131
- It maintains a larger-than-publicly-believed stockpile of Level 9 Fixed Soul Tool Shells, creating a military threat the three continental empires cannot readily answer. 131
- A Sun Moon soul engineer’s attack on Mu En near the border nearly provided the Star Luo Empire with a pretext for war. 66
- Its military strength makes warfare a dangerous brinkmanship contest centered on Level 9 Fixed Soul Tool Shells. 131
Institutions
Mingde Hall
Mingde Hall serves as the empire’s foremost Soul Tool research and manufacturing institution. It conducts advanced research, develops high-end equipment, and maintains technological espionage efforts against Shrek Academy. 38
Sun Moon Imperial Soul Engineer Academy
The Sun Moon Imperial Soul Engineer Academy represents the empire in major competitions and trains elite Soul Engineers. Its tournament team includes a seventh-level Soul Engineer and the Hongchen Siblings, who became Soul Kings before age fifteen. 68 69
The academy later begins an exchange program with Shrek Academy. Jing Hongchen leads its teachers and students to Shrek using an advanced flying Soul Tool. 142
Relationships
- Mingde Hall — The empire’s leading Soul Tool research and manufacturing center; a foundation of its technological power. 38
- Sun Moon Imperial Soul Engineer Academy — Its elite Soul Engineer academy and tournament representative institution. 68 69
- Holy Spirit Cult — An Evil Soul Master organization with a five-hundred-year foundation inside the empire; their cooperation is initially described as limited but later treated as a dangerous alliance. 104 131
- Shrek Academy — Technological rival, espionage target, tournament opponent, and later exchange-program partner. 38 97 142
- Star Luo Empire — A strategic rival against whom the empire has maintained parity through Soul Tool advantages; border tensions nearly escalate into open conflict. 38 66
- Jing Hongchen — Mingde Hall’s leader and a key figure concerned with preserving the empire’s Soul Tool dominance. 38 102
- Long Xiaoyao — Dragon Emperor Douluo associated with the Holy Spirit Cult; his position helps connect concerns about the Cult to the empire. 104 129
Story Role / Major Arcs
Soul Tool Rivalry
The empire’s monopoly on rare metals and advanced Soul Tool production establishes it as the Douluo Continent’s foremost technological power. Shrek Academy’s refined Level 3 Soul Barrier becomes a major warning sign to Jing Hongchen, who sees it as evidence that Shrek may be closing the gap. 38
Continental Advanced Soul Master Tournament
After four thousand years, the Sun Moon Imperial Soul Engineer Academy seeks to take the tournament championship from Shrek Academy. Its representative team reaches the final but is defeated after You Jie’s Meteor Dragon overwhelms its defenses and tactics. 69 94 95 96 97
Holy Spirit Cult Threat
The discovery that the Holy Spirit Cult has operated within the empire for centuries raises fears that the organization may exploit or deepen its cooperation with the state. Its combined strength is viewed as capable of destabilizing the balance between the empire, Shrek Academy, and the three continental nations. 103 104 115 131
Sunrise City Conspiracy
Investigators uncover an underground prison in Sunrise City and conclude that the empire may intend to host a tournament, capture eliminated academy teams and sect participants separately, and use them as leverage against the continent’s rising generation and combat forces. 122 124 125 128
Information War and Exchange Program
In response to the empire’s suspected cooperation with the Holy Spirit Cult, You Jie proposes spreading rumors linking imperial elites to Evil Soul Masters in order to strain that partnership and cause internal instability. 134 135
Despite these tensions, the Sun Moon Imperial Soul Engineer Academy later begins an exchange program at Shrek Academy, creating an opportunity for both institutions to observe each other’s Soul Tool methods. 142 144
