"I really don't know."
Facing George's questioning, Bai Ye told the truth. God knew what was going on with those vampires, chasing after him one by one for no reason.
"What about Gwen? Where is she now?"
"Gwen? Don't worry about that. I sent her back ahead of time," Bai Ye assured him. Then he leaned closer and said familiarly, "So what comes next? Do we follow procedure and go back to the station for questioning? After all, several thousand... humans infected by mutants died."
As he spoke, Bai Ye looked around at the surroundings. Scattered corpses were still visible on the bloodstained ground, while damaged buildings stood everywhere. The repair bill would definitely be huge.
"No need. You can go home directly. We'll summon you again if anything comes up," George said.
Thinking of the calls from General Ross and the higher-ups earlier, it was obvious that whether Bai Ye wanted it or not, they intended to use him as their main publicity tool to suppress the attention surrounding mutants as much as possible.
"However, while we won't hold you accountable, you may still need to pay a fine for the damage to the surrounding environment. Of course, we'll also give you a bonus for righteous conduct and a Glorious Citizen Medal," George said, leaving Bai Ye dumbfounded.
It was too realistic. After a Super Hero finished fighting, he still had to compensate for the damaged streets.
"How about I cover all the losses suffered by this Super Hero?" A deep male voice sounded beside them. When George turned and saw the newcomer, his expression changed slightly.
The newcomer was an enormous fat man, over two meters tall. A white suit was stretched tight over his massive body, and he walked toward them step by step with a slender cane.
"Who is this?" Bai Ye pretended not to know.
Yet the moment this fat man appeared, Bai Ye recognized him even faster than George did: Wilson Grant Fisk, the underground emperor who ruled the entire United States underworld, known as Kingpin.
More than ninety percent of his body was supposedly muscle. His physical abilities absolutely surpassed those of ordinary humans. Spider-Man was called the Little Kingpin, and Kingpin was the enemy of every street-level hero in New York.
All Bai Ye could say was that tonight had truly drawn together a storm of powerful figures. All kinds of influential people had focused their attention here, each harboring different schemes.
George's expression was somewhat unpleasant as he introduced him to Bai Ye. "This is Mr. Fisk, a famous philanthropist in New York and an important candidate in this mayoral election."
He had no intention of telling Bai Ye about Kingpin's glorious deeds. He did not want Bai Ye getting involved. Yet he had no idea that while he himself stood irreconcilably opposed to vice, gambling, and drugs, Bai Ye had long since become one with them.
To George's astonishment, Bai Ye approached with a smile. "Mr. Fisk, did you just say you'd help me pay for the damage to the streets? How could I possibly accept that?"
George: ???
"Of course. As a member of New York City, I can't let Super Heroes bleed and shed tears. Since you put in the effort, I'll merely contribute a trifling sum. It's what I should do."
Leaning on his cane with a smile on his face, Kingpin exuded the aura of a wealthy tycoon with every gesture.
In fact, he did not even need to make the first move. After Bai Ye displayed extraordinary combat ability as a pure human, the catfish effect meant that a large number of wealthy people would inevitably pay to associate themselves with his name.
The same thing had happened during the bank robbery case. Plenty of people had wanted to contact Bai Ye through all sorts of connections and ask him for endorsements and such. But Bai Ye had been too weak at the time, so he had simply cut off contact with the outside world. Now, there was no need to be so cautious.
"Mr. Fisk's awareness is truly admirable. No wonder you're New York's famous philanthropist and great benefactor. If everyone had your level of awareness, public safety in New York City would surely rise to another level," Bai Ye said, openly exchanging commercial flattery with Kingpin right in front of George.
Their conversation was then "coincidentally" recorded by reporters who had not yet left. By tomorrow, one of the headlines would definitely read: "Super Hero Saves New York, Mayoral Candidate Gives Generously."
"I've admired Super Heroes for a long time. I wonder when you might have time? I would like to treat you to a meal," Kingpin said with a gentle smile on his fat face. Anyone who did not know him might think he was a good man.
"Of course, no problem. I have time right now. Shall we go?" Thinking of a certain possibility, Bai Ye answered eagerly.
Then, under George's twitching gaze, Bai Ye and Kingpin chatted more and more enthusiastically. They were practically about to become sworn brothers on the spot.
Just as they were about to get into the black sedan together and leave, George finally could not hold himself back. "Bai Ye, wait."
"What is it, Chief? Didn't you say I could leave?" Bai Ye asked as he turned around. Kingpin, sitting inside the car, also looked over. Though he wore a smile, his eyes were icy cold, hoping the chief would not ruin his plans.
With both of them staring at him, George's mouth twitched before he said, "Be careful."
"Of course. Take care, Chief. I'll go to your house in a few days to play with Gwen," Bai Ye reassured him, but those words only made George feel more stabbed in the heart. It would be better if Bai Ye did not come at all.
Hearing that Bai Ye had ties to the chief's family, Kingpin's previously cold gaze immediately turned warm, and the small thought of warning him vanished at once.
Watching the black sedan slowly pull away and disappear into the distance, George waved dejectedly and signaled his officers to hurry up and clean up the scene.
Inside the car, Bai Ye had the sedan stop in a corner. After picking up Camilla, who had been waiting for a long time, they drove toward Kingpin's residence.
On the way, Bai Ye's previously gentle expression gradually returned to calm. Looking evenly at the steadily seated Kingpin beside him, he said, "Mr. Fisk, you must have something you need my help with if you invited me this time."
"Of course. As Chief George mentioned earlier, I would like to compete for the position of New York City mayor in this election," Kingpin said modestly.
But Bai Ye instantly understood what he meant. He simply wanted Bai Ye to endorse him, much like George's earlier idea.
"I understand, I understand." Bai Ye wore an expression of realization. Then his face turned stern the next moment. "This is very simple for me. First, V me 50 million so I can see your sincerity."
"V... V 50 million to see my sincerity?" Even Kingpin could barely keep his expression composed. Looking at Bai Ye, who was asking an outrageous price, he did not know what to say for a moment.
"That's right. As long as you pay enough, I guarantee you'll become the mayor of New York City this time," Bai Ye said confidently.
