Zhang Meizhu's parents died in a rat plague six years before her partnership with Gao Teng, leaving her without family support. Her father had worked for the Public Security Bureau; after he brought down a criminal gang, a surviving member targeted their family. When the attacker broke into their home to abduct her and her mother, Zhang Meizhu caught him off guard and stabbed him to death. 5 14

She became one of Third Middle School's strongest students, ranking fifth in the school and studying in the Gold Medal Class. Despite her talent, she works as a Public Security Bureau auxiliary in the sewers to fund cultivation resources, preferring medicine from major manufacturers over sponsorship from local pharmaceutical companies. 5 19

Zhang Meizhu initially partnered with Gao Teng only for sewer work and was suspicious that his eagerness to take dangerous tasks meant he was interested in her. Once he explained that he wanted to improve his strength, the two developed an effective working relationship. 5 6

Zhang Meizhu later investigated her neighbor Wang He after noticing that women entering his apartment never left. She and Gao Teng broke into his home and killed the Tier 3 Green Snake he had been feeding with victims. When Wang showed no remorse and attempted to bribe them, Zhang Meizhu killed him in anger and accepted Gao Teng's help in concealing the incident. 11 12 13

Following the Green Snake incident, she chose to begin hunting monsters with Gao Teng. Although she presented the decision as a way to hone herself before the college entrance examination, Gao Teng recognized that she also wanted to help him deal with his debts. 14
