Background / History

Neji is a Branch House member of the Hyuga Clan, bound by the Caged Bird curse mark concealed beneath his forehead protector. The mark prevents a Branch House member’s Byakugan from being taken after death and gives the Main House the power to damage the marked person’s neural pathways. His father died in place of the current clan head, Hyuga Hiashi, making Neji’s position within the clan a particularly painful symbol of the Main House–Branch House divide. 32 34

Despite his Branch House status, Neji is acknowledged as the strongest of the Hyuga’s younger generation, including both Main House and Branch House members. He trains under Might Guy with Rock Lee and Tenten, and he initially regards Naruto as another naturally gifted rival who may affect the coming Chunin Exams. 14 15 31

His formal manner toward Hinata—whom he calls “Lady Hinata”—initially reflects emotional distance and the Hyuga hierarchy. However, he shows genuine concern for her condition, risks Main House displeasure to bring Naruto to her, and gradually becomes more protective of both Hinata and Naruto. 29 31 36

When Naruto asks about Hinata’s absence, Neji reveals that she has been comatose for a month after recurring nightmares. Though unsettled by Naruto’s contempt for the Hyuga Clan and alarmed by Kurama’s chakra, Neji agrees to take Naruto to see her. 29 30

Hyuga Estate Confrontation

Neji leads Naruto through the Hyuga compound while avoiding Main House elders, explaining the clan’s hierarchy and the isolation imposed by its bloodline politics. When Rokkaku rejects Naruto’s visit and belittles the Branch House, Neji defends Naruto’s character despite the danger to himself. 31 32
