Background / History
Neji is a Branch House member of the Hyuga Clan, bound by the Caged Bird curse mark concealed beneath his forehead protector. The mark prevents a Branch House member’s Byakugan from being taken after death and gives the Main House the power to damage the marked person’s neural pathways. His father died in place of the current clan head, Hyuga Hiashi, making Neji’s position within the clan a particularly painful symbol of the Main House–Branch House divide. 32 34
Despite his Branch House status, Neji is acknowledged as the strongest of the Hyuga’s younger generation, including both Main House and Branch House members. He trains under Might Guy with Rock Lee and Tenten, and he initially regards Naruto as another naturally gifted rival who may affect the coming Chunin Exams. 14 15 31
Appearance
Neji is a pale-eyed Hyuga youth who usually keeps his Caged Bird mark hidden beneath a forehead protector. 31 32
- Pale Byakugan eyes. 31
- A blue Caged Bird curse mark on his forehead. 32
- Often wears a forehead protector and has bandaged hands from intensive training. 32
- Wears a plain white training uniform while at the Hyuga compound. 31
Personality
Neji is quiet, observant, and intensely self-assured. He recognizes Naruto’s extraordinary chakra and talent through the Byakugan, yet remains convinced of his own superiority rather than dismissing Naruto outright. 15
His formal manner toward Hinata—whom he calls “Lady Hinata”—initially reflects emotional distance and the Hyuga hierarchy. However, he shows genuine concern for her condition, risks Main House displeasure to bring Naruto to her, and gradually becomes more protective of both Hinata and Naruto. 29 31 36
Neji values sincerity over manipulation. After Naruto’s reckless defense of the Branch House, he tells him that speaking honestly is a rare strength rather than a weakness. 36
Abilities & Skills
Byakugan
Neji’s Byakugan lets him perceive chakra at a level others cannot, enabling him to recognize Naruto’s enormous chakra reserves and monitor physical signs during confrontations. 15 32
- Identifies Naruto’s chakra as vast and nearly overflowing. 15
- Is recognized as a bearer of one of the Ninja World’s remaining great dojutsu. 31

Hyuga Combat Standing
Neji is considered the strongest member of the Hyuga’s younger generation, a reputation recognized by both Branch House and Main House members. 31

- Is confident enough to regard Naruto as a fellow born genius rather than an inferior opponent. 15
- His status is significant enough that Hyuga Rokkaku sees him as a threat to Main House control over the Branch House. 32
Caged Bird Curse Mark
The Caged Bird is not a voluntary technique but the defining restraint imposed upon Neji as a Branch House member. 32
- Conceals the distinction between Main House and Branch House beneath his forehead protector. 32
- Destroys a Branch House member’s Byakugan optic nerves upon their death. 32
- Allows the Main House to attack a Branch House member’s neural pathways. 32
- Leaves Neji vulnerable to Main House commands, particularly when Rokkaku orders him to kneel. 32

- Hyuga Rokkaku — A Main House elder who humiliates Neji over his Branch House status and attempts to force him to kneel using the Caged Bird. 32

Story Role / Major Arcs
Training with Naruto
While Naruto trains with Might Guy’s group, Neji observes his rapid growth through the Byakugan. He acknowledges Naruto’s unusual talent and chakra reserves but remains certain that he himself is the strongest. 14 15
Hinata’s Coma
When Naruto asks about Hinata’s absence, Neji reveals that she has been comatose for a month after recurring nightmares. Though unsettled by Naruto’s contempt for the Hyuga Clan and alarmed by Kurama’s chakra, Neji agrees to take Naruto to see her. 29 30
Hyuga Estate Confrontation
Neji leads Naruto through the Hyuga compound while avoiding Main House elders, explaining the clan’s hierarchy and the isolation imposed by its bloodline politics. Rokkaku exposes Neji’s curse mark and orders him to kneel. Naruto forcibly keeps Neji standing and openly challenges the Main House’s treatment of the Branch House. Neji ultimately refuses to act against Naruto, becoming an unwilling but crucial symbol of resistance for the watching Branch House members. 32 33
Aftermath
After Hiashi punishes Rokkaku and the immediate conflict ends, Neji thanks Naruto for standing up for the Branch House. He later reassures Naruto that sincerity is Naruto’s personal strength, even if Naruto considers himself clumsy with words. 34 36
