Background
Whitebeard was once a leading combatant of the Rocks Pirates, where he stood second only to Rocks D. Xebec in strength. His former crewmates included Kaido, Charlotte Linlin, Shiki, and others who later became major powers of the sea. 1226
After founding the Whitebeard Pirates, he built his crew around a family ideal: his commanders and subordinates were treated as sons rather than expendable followers. He was also sworn brother to Kozuki Oden, whose daughter Hiyori calls him “Old Man.” 776 931
Appearance
Whitebeard is an elderly but imposing pirate who carries a massive naginata and is commonly attended by medical equipment and IV treatment. Despite his visibly deteriorating condition, he can still project overwhelming pressure in battle. 510 1155
- Clouded old eyes and an aged body strained by years of combat. 1112 1223
- Usually carries an enormous naginata, also called a bisento. 1155 1203
- Often wears a large cloak. 1155
- Requires routine medical treatment due to the burden placed on his body by the Tremor-Tremor Fruit. 510 1155
Personality
Whitebeard is fiercely protective of those he accepts as family. He recruits sons, values unity above wealth and status, and regards harm done to his crew as a personal wound. Satch’s murder drives him to mobilize against Blackbeard, while his refusal to aid Wano stems from his unwillingness to sacrifice more family members. 700 776 1079
He is proud, blunt, and easily provoked by perceived disrespect, particularly from rivals such as Red-Haired Shanks. However, he is not reckless by default: he assesses shifting power balances, recognizes threats to the old order, and eventually accepts the need to seek Uchiha Qin Yu’s knowledge when Laugh Tale’s secrets become critical. 747 1112 1136
Abilities & Skills
Tremor-Tremor Fruit
Whitebeard possesses the Tremor-Tremor Fruit, described as the strongest Paramecia-type Devil Fruit. Its shockwaves can shatter space, devastate the sea, and overwhelm powerful opponents. 1228 1241
- Uses Air Quake to generate destructive shockwaves through his fists or naginata. 1034 1177
- Used Airquake: Wave Fist against Charlotte Linlin after her ambush at Laugh Tale. 1175
- Defeated a Thunder Eel Serpent and tens of thousands of Sea Kings with a single all-out strike, creating a massive tsunami. 1155 1156
- His fruit’s strain has contributed to his declining health and need for medical treatment. 1155
Haki
Whitebeard possesses powerful Haki, including Observation Haki sufficient to participate in long-range threat detection and locate targets hidden beneath the sea. 1156 1162
- Clashed evenly with Scopper Gaban’s Haki, splitting the clouds overhead with their collision. 1203
- Was considered capable of using Haki to lock onto the submerged Mirage Clams and attack them from the surface. 1162
- His Haki and combat presence remain formidable despite age and illness. 1155 1156
Naginata Combat
Whitebeard wields an enormous naginata as his primary weapon, pairing broad, forceful swings with Tremor-Tremor Fruit shockwaves. 1155 1203
- Used a single horizontal slash to test Scopper Gaban immediately upon his arrival. 1203
- Delivered a direct, shockwave-infused slash against Blackbeard during their final confrontation. 1241
- Broke through the Thunder Eel Serpent’s lightning defense with a follow-up naginata strike. 1156

Story Role / Major Arcs
Recruiting Ace
Whitebeard sends his crew to bring Ace aboard after Ace challenges him. Recognizing Ace’s potential and inherited Conqueror’s Haki, he accepts him as a son and promises to personally ensure his training in all three forms of Haki. 479 511
The Changing Era
As Qin Yu, the Skeleton Archfiend, and other new forces upset the balance of the seas, Whitebeard recognizes that the “gears of the era” are changing. He sees Ace as the most promising means of preserving his crew’s position and cultivating a rival capable of challenging Qin Yu. 610 617 747
Satch’s Death and the Hunt for Blackbeard
Satch’s murder by Teach devastates Whitebeard and exposes a betrayal at the heart of his family. Whitebeard allows Ace to pursue Teach to defend the crew’s rules and build his own reputation, but his anger intensifies as Blackbeard’s influence grows. 700 747 1081
Pursuit of Laugh Tale
After the route map to Laugh Tale is publicized, Whitebeard verifies its authenticity with Shanks and commits to reaching the final island. He does so despite his worsening health, determined to claim the Pirate King’s throne before time runs out. 1136 1155
On the route, he destroys the Thunder Eel Serpent and its surrounding Sea Kings, demonstrating that his battle power remains among the world’s highest. 1155 1156
Laugh Tale Conflict
At Laugh Tale, Whitebeard clashes with Charlotte Linlin, mechanical guardians, and the gathering forces competing for the island’s secret. Though he personally disdains using Guardian Power to improve himself, he permits his crew to secure it so they will not fall behind rival forces. 1175 1177 1199
War Against the World Government
When the God Tree’s growth and the World Government’s modified-human legion threaten every faction present, Whitebeard sets aside pride and offers to follow Qin Yu’s command against their shared enemy. 1213 1221
He later confronts resurrected figures from the old era, including Roger and Rocks. After Blackbeard’s betrayal leaves him poisoned and gravely injured, Qin Yu heals him, allowing Whitebeard to resume his assault on Teach. 1223 1228 1231 1241
Trivia
- Whitebeard’s ideal of family is repeatedly contrasted with Kaido’s desire to build an army and Charlotte Linlin’s ambition to build a nation. 931 1162
- He refuses to use Guardian Power on himself because he considers externally gained strength beneath someone who reached his position through personal training and tempering. 1199
- He once knew the Thunder Eel Serpent from the Rocks era, when Rocks attempted to capture it to pull a ship. 1155
