Academy years

Sasuke entered the Ninja Academy determined to match his brother Itachi's reputation. He impressed Iruka with a flawless curved shuriken throw, motivated in part by Naruto's own strong exam performance. 9

At home, Fugaku frequently compared Sasuke unfavorably to Itachi, leaving Sasuke embarrassed but resolved to improve. 14 Although he initially rejected Naruto's attempts at friendship, Fugaku accepted Naruto's proposal that the two become sworn brothers. Sasuke continued to resist the arrangement outwardly, even as Naruto increasingly treated him as a younger brother. 15

Uchiha Clan attack

During the assault on the Uchiha Clan, Orochimaru targeted Sasuke after identifying his potential. Mikoto was impaled while protecting him, and Orochimaru's snakes poisoned both Mikoto and Izumi. Sasuke's despair and hatred triggered the awakening of his Three-Tomoe Sharingan. 27

He secretly visited Mikoto, who had survived but retained a snake-bite scar on her neck. 38

During the same return, Sasuke infiltrated Hiruzen Sarutobi's residence by transforming into a black cat and stole the Scroll of Seals for Orochimaru's research.
