History and Influence
Over ten thousand years, Shrek grew from a small school into an independent city and a holy land for soul masters. Shrek City is outside imperial jurisdiction and has its own laws and military. The academy recruits elite students from across the continent, while its graduates hold positions in the empires’ militaries, sects, and courts 3 5 24.
Shrek backs the three great empires in their conflict with the Sun Moon Empire. Its influence also makes it an obstacle to Gu Yuan’s plans: he identifies the academy as central to Tang San’s control of the continent’s elite soul master resources 5 14.
Admissions and Education
- Entrance screening — Ordinary applicants undergo an assessment that includes an Innate Soul Power check. A boy with level-three Innate Soul Power is turned away 24.
- Recommendations — Academy-issued tokens and letters of recommendation allow access through a separate “green channel.” A letter from Douluo Hall secures admission for Gu Yuan, Gu Yuena, Huo Yuhao, and Jin Ruiqiu without the entrance exam 24.
- Departments — The academy has a Martial Soul Department and a Soul Guidance Department. The latter maintains laboratories for soul-tool work 28.
- Freshman assessment — Freshmen compete in teams of three in an elimination tournament. Results affect class assignments, resources, and eligibility for Inner Court preparatory status; students who have reached Soul Ancestor may apply for exemption 35.
- Accommodation — Dormitories are divided among the Outer Court, Inner Court, and Core Area. The four Douluo Hall students receive individual Core Area dormitories through their recommendation 24.
Leadership and Faculty
- Mu En — Sea God Pavilion Master and a level-99 Limit Douluo. He initially directs the academy to treat the four Douluo Hall students according to their talent and conduct rather than their origins 24 34.
- Yan Shaozhe — Martial Soul Department dean. He advocates giving the four students top-level resources and repeatedly tries to recruit Huo Yuhao 33 39 48.
- Qian Duoduo — Soul Guidance Department dean. He recognizes Huo Yuhao’s aptitude for soul guidance and later opposes forcibly detaining him 33 49.
- Zhou Yi — Freshman Class One’s homeroom teacher, known for demanding training and a stated fifty-percent elimination rate for her class 26 27.
- Fan Yu — Soul Guidance Department teacher who offers to personally teach Huo Yuhao and seek core-disciple status for him 28 29.
Relationship with Douluo Hall
Douluo Hall rises over two hundred years to become a continental power comparable to Shrek. The two organizations avoid open conflict, but Shrek’s elders worry about Douluo Hall’s reach among commoner soul masters and its resemblance to the former Martial Soul Hall 18 24 34.
The admission of four Douluo Hall-recommended students brings that rivalry inside the academy. After the students demonstrate exceptional abilities, Sea God Pavilion elders debate whether to cultivate them or view them as potential agents of a rival power. Mu En rules that they should receive appropriate guidance without discrimination, while remaining under observation 32 33 34.
The relationship deteriorates when Huo Yuhao chooses to leave for Douluo Hall. Yan Shaozhe offers him greater resources, but Shrek then closes the city gates and sends seven Titled Douluos to intercept his group. Mu En ultimately orders them to let the group leave after Douluo Hall reinforcements arrive 49 50.
