Monkey came from an impoverished family in Mentougou. Before his family could afford a boat when he was fifteen, he routinely crossed mountain roads to reach nearby markets; even afterward, he worked the waterways and became familiar with the routes around True Martial, Yusheng, and Pingze. Unable to make a living from fishing, he joined the Fish Dragon Gang and became one of Xu Meng's trusted men. 79 80 122

After Monkey's mother died, his clan seized his family's small plots of land, consumed the household's remaining money during the funeral, and even took its only wooden board. He left home for Yusheng to survive, while maintaining ties with his younger sister, Chen Qinghe. He later rejected the clan's attempts at reconciliation and considers their fate irrelevant to him. 121 122

Personality

Monkey is deeply loyal and values repaying kindness. Qin Fang's repeated rescues of both Monkey and Xu Meng make him willing to follow Qin Fang into dangerous situations, including the pursuit of Wang Hu and the investigation of the mysterious cult. When forced to choose, he considers his debt to Xu Meng repaid and chooses Qin Fang without hesitation. 79 107

He is deferential toward Qin Fang and openly awed by his strength, but he is not fearless. Qin Fang's ruthless killings leave him shaken, and he is terrified when Qin Fang inadvertently carries him up a cliff to observe the abandoned temple. Monkey first assists Qin Fang after returning Qin Fang's throwing dart with Stone and Mouse. During the conflict with the Water Dragon Gang, he accompanies Qin Fang to Zhao Cheng's residence, witnesses Qin Fang's overwhelming combat ability, searches the burning compound, and discovers a hidden compartment containing more than one hundred taels in silver notes. Qin Fang rewards him with roughly thirty taels. 63 74 76

Journey to Pingze

After Xu Meng's gang suffers heavy losses, Monkey volunteers to guide Qin Fang to Pingze despite being warned that the mission may be dangerous. He supplies Qin Fang with local information about Wang Hu and the Treasure Fish, then helps him navigate the region and establish a temporary base. 79 80 81

Trusted Messenger

Following the Pingze events, Monkey becomes Qin Fang's principal courier. He delivers letters, purchases Blood-Qi Pills, carries money to Qin Fang's master and senior brother, and continues gathering intelligence from Yusheng and Pingze. 90 92 97
