Power Progression
Zeref’s documented changes involve divine mutation, curse research, acquired perception, and possession rather than a conventional cultivation sequence.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Beyond Second Dimension-level power | 689 | The System attributes his altered power to Ankhseram’s gaze. The same event changes the plane’s rules, bringing its effective strength to First Dimension level. |
| Conditional Saint-level power | 690 | Can reach Saint-level power when cherishing life; his Life Predation attack forces Li to flee. This is a conditional state, not a confirmed permanent Saint realm. |
| Fusion with Mavis’s curse | 810 | His stronger curse overwhelms hers and absorbs her accumulated life force. He reports obtaining something unusual after the curses fuse. |
| Enhanced dynamic vision | 846 | Gains exceptional movement perception during the battle after sealing Li’s advanced Sharingan abilities, allowing him to read and counter Li’s attacks. |
| Saint-rank power through divine descent | 1003 1004 1005 | A First Apostle descends into his body, rapidly heals his injuries, and produces an aura stronger than Li’s normal power. This is borrowed power; the sudden descent limits the possessor and damages the host. |
Background / History
Constructed Origin
Zeref believes that the Black Dragon Acnologia killed his family and that Ankhseram subsequently gave him a curse connected to his pursuit of forbidden arts. Ankhseram later reveals that this background was deliberately supplied: Zeref was created as a puppet, and his supposed personal history was part of that construction 809 851.
His immortality comes from carrying Ankhseram’s will. Ankhseram also implanted his belief that he needed to die, paradoxically using that desire to give him a reason to continue living. Zeref does not know his true nature until the revelation interrupts his battle with Li 851.
Mavis and Bradman
Zeref meets Mavis shortly after she and her companions establish their guild. Seeking someone who could help investigate his curse, he teaches her magic—including forbidden spells he warns her not to use, while expecting that she will eventually disregard the warning 808 809.
When Mavis uses one of those spells against a bone dragon, its life-force cost should kill her. Zeref intervenes and gives her part of his curse. He later acknowledges that he can reproduce much of the curse’s mechanism without having completely deciphered it 809.
Zeref conceals his responsibility and presents Mavis’s condition as a curse from Ankhseram. After leaving for another continent, he eventually returns, falsely declares his love, and triggers her Life Steal. His stronger curse consumes her life force instead of allowing hers to consume him 809 810.
He identifies Bradman as his son with Mavis. Later revelations distinguish Bradman’s body, which carries Zeref’s bloodline, from his soul, which originates in the divine realm of Order and Fate. Zeref personally guides that soul into the body 808 999.
Rise on the Western Continent
Originally from the Northern Continent, Zeref becomes the Western Continent’s dominant power. His followers elevate him into a religious figure, and rival religions lose influence as his worship spreads; the account of this expansion states that he did not deliberately initiate all of that displacement 694 764.
August describes his rule as operating through a cult rather than direct control of secular governments. Zeref later outlines schemes to increase his sect’s prestige through mercenary operations, supporting his wider ambitions for continental influence 691 810.
Appearance
- Youthful face: Appears sixteen or seventeen despite centuries of experience 688 809.
- Black hair and black eyes: August remarks that Li resembles him in these features 688 691.
- Expressionless first impression: Initially looks harmless, but his eyes convey pronounced contempt 688.
- Dark supernatural presence: Li’s divine sense perceives him as a mass of darkness spreading blackness wherever he passes 688.
- Aura of age: Li senses the passage of time in him despite his youthful body 688.
Personality
Zeref presents himself as a quiet, sometimes gentle youth trapped by immortality. His early pleas for death are desperate enough that he begs Li to kill him after his uncontrolled power kills a companion 688 690.
Behind that presentation, he is calculating and manipulative. He exploits Mavis’s trust, treats Bradman as an expendable instrument, and repeatedly supplies Li with different explanations for the same plans. Once Li ceases to be useful, Zeref openly calls him prospective experimental material 809 810 811 839.
His confidence often becomes arrogance. He assumes that sealing Li’s eyes has settled their battle and waits for mental exhaustion to finish his opponent. When merit-infused attacks demonstrate that he can actually die, however, he abandons his earlier death-seeking posture and struggles to survive 846 847 849 850.
Abilities & Skills
Life and Death Curse
The System describes Zeref’s power as both deprivation of life and the imposition of death. Some effects do more than drain vitality: they directly change a target’s attribute from life to death 689.
- Cherishing life: Causes him to take surrounding lives involuntarily 689 690.
- Leaning toward death: Allows him to deliberately wield death-dealing power 689.
- Life Predation / Death Predation: A lethal attack capable of threatening Li despite Li’s greater underlying strength 690 808.
- Wide-area attacks: Splits black light into multiplying beams that cover everything within Li’s view 689.
- Automatic protection: When he is endangered or defeated, the curse feeds on surrounding life to sustain and protect him 711 712.
Immortality and Its Limits
Zeref can survive injuries that ordinary opponents could not, but his immortality is not absolute against every kind of power 808 849.
- World-bound existence: He states that Ankhseram’s blessing prevents him from leaving the world; its destruction would also destroy him 839.
- Merit and karma vulnerability: Li’s merit-infused attacks wound him, while a strike carrying merit and karma leaves him facing death 849 850.
- Streaming Starlight: Mavis’s body can drain his life force, provoking his own curse into counter-draining and creating a deadlock 810.
- Possession damage: A First Apostle’s descent brings severe aftereffects and likely worsens his already poor bodily condition 1005.
Spatial Manipulation
Zeref uses spatial laws without visible strain from his first battle with Li 689.
- Teleportation: Moves himself and others across great distances, including transporting Li to Ankhseram’s tower 712 840.
- Portal barriers: Surrounds himself with a black rectangular defense whose surfaces lead into another space, removing attacks that touch them 837 838.
- Partial intangibility: Displaces only the body parts touched by an attack, allowing a blade to pass through harmlessly 839.
- Attack redirection: Transfers Li’s blade through a small opening and sends it back toward Li from behind 839 840.
- Spatial rifts and traps: Creates overlapping tears, layered defenses, and attacks from between dimensions 841 848.
- Return after collapse: Survives Li’s spatial-collapse attack by causing another collapse around his body to force his way back 838.
- Countermeasure: Li’s Cross Sharingan and Crimson Canopy can seal or disrupt his spatial techniques 842 843 844.
Curse Research and Forbidden Magic
Zeref identifies himself primarily as a researcher rather than a battle-oriented mage. His study nevertheless produces lethal techniques and ways to reproduce portions of Ankhseram’s curse 809.
- Curse transfer: Places a similar life-draining curse on Mavis 809.
- Forbidden instruction: Teaches magic whose cost consumes the caster’s life force in proportion to the lives it destroys 809.
- Aura recognition: Recognizes Li despite the Soul Reincarnation Spell and his use of August’s body 712.
- Bone and Flesh Separation: Severely damages Li’s arm, rupturing blood vessels and injuring bone 847.
- Illusions: Uses deception in combat, although Li eventually sees through it 836.
Spirit Summoning and Restraint
- Pain Banshee: Summons it against Li, who blocks the attack with the Supreme Purity Way 835.
- Earthbound spirits: Uses them to pressure Li and force him away from the ground 835 836.
- Night Parade of a Hundred Demons: Releases hundreds of resentful spirits from a small sphere; Li repels them with the Nine Revolutions Mystic Art 836.
- Shadow Binding Curse Technique: Restrains Li, who escapes and turns the technique against him 836.
- Pillar of light: Imprisons Serena when she attacks him 835.
- Wind God Garuda: Summons the powerful barbarian god during the confrontation at the execution platform 1001.
Heart-Based Mental and Sealing Attacks
Zeref can tear out his own heart and use it as a conduit for curses, resentment, and mental interference 844.
- Spatial-seal disruption: The heart counters the Crimson Canopy’s lockdown 844.
- Mental assault: Forces Li to devote nearly half his attention to remaining clear-headed 845.
- Sharingan sealing: Reduces Li’s eyes to the Three-Tomoe state, removing his advanced ocular abilities 845.
- Heartbeat interference: Manipulates Li’s heartbeat and causes pain in his eyes 846.
- Recovery limitation: Power removed with the heart gradually returns to Zeref’s body 846.
Sensory Deprivation
Zeref traps Li in darkness without sensation, producing loneliness, confusion, and doubt about his own existence. Li eventually escapes by concentrating on his determination to kill Zeref 849 850.
- Six Sense Deprivation, Heavenly Dance Treasure Wheel: Later defeats Li and leaves him without his senses 990.
- Psychological effect: The earlier imprisonment feels to Li as though tens of thousands of years have passed, despite its uncertain duration outside the spell 851.
Close-Quarters Combat
Centuries of experience make Zeref considerably more capable in physical combat than his researcher identity suggests 809.
- Evasion: Finds openings beyond Li’s reach while avoiding sustained attacks 809.
- Magical blades: Conjures two forearm-length black blades with immense destructive power and high upkeep; Li breaks both 845.
- Enhanced perception: Uses acquired dynamic vision to read Li’s movements and counterattack 846.
- Physical limitation: Blunt attacks cannot meaningfully injure Li’s body without a substantial increase in strength 846.
Faith-Powered Miracles
- Uses immense faith power to project a goddess’s image and scatter blessing-like particles over the people of Badlia City 896.
- Performs the miracle in the Ankhseram Church’s name as part of Li’s plan to secure religious backing for political expansion 895 896.
Authority and Followers
- Twelve Shields: Commands powerful subordinates who have descended as apostles; Shaka serves as their leader 997 1056.
- Religious establishment: His organization includes dozens of apostles, hundreds of thousands of knights, hundreds of thousands of clergymen, and tens of millions of subjects 991.
- Cardinals and ritual personnel: Mobilizes cardinals, zealots, and mages for the planned execution of black-clad Layla 997.
- Strategic expendability: Later admits using Li to eliminate some of the Twelve Shields and directs Shaka to manage the remaining members 1057.
Relationships
- Ankhseram — Master, creator, and source of his immortality. Zeref seeks revenge against Ankhseram, unaware that his creator already knows about his dealings with outside powers 809 837 851.
- Li — Initially a prospective executioner, later a fellow disciple, collaborator, controlled rival, and enemy. Their cooperation ultimately collapses through Zeref’s betrayal 688 712 808 895 1005.
- Mavis — Mother of the body Zeref identifies as his son. He deceives her, curses her, absorbs her life force, and later seeks the recovery of her body from Streaming Starlight 808 809 810.
- Bradman — Son or bodily descendant, creation, and subordinate. Zeref guides his otherworldly soul into a prepared body that enables loyalty and control; Shaka later recalls Zeref effortlessly killing him 999 1000 1056.
- Another Supreme God — Receives Zeref’s allegiance and promises to destroy Ankhseram 837.
- Shaka — Leader of the Twelve Shields. Initially dismisses Zeref as a worldly representative, then comes to regard his strength as immeasurable 991 1056 1057.
- Serena and Celia — Targets whom Zeref dismisses as “trash” and attempts to capture, prompting Li’s intervention 835.
- Timaria — Li tells her that Zeref values her family’s influence rather than her personally 1110.

Notable Quotes
“My name is Zeref. I seek death. You are strong, so please kill me. Kill me seriously. Otherwise, I think the one who dies will be you.” 688
“How could the big boss possibly tell the hero the truth before the end?” 839
“No! No! I can't die yet! I still have something extremely important to do! I have to save this world—I must destroy Ankhseram!” 850
Trivia
- The System recognizes Zeref from Li’s memories of Fairy Tail, but confirms that their current plane is not the Fairy Tail world 688 689.
- Bradman’s attainment of level 19 places him in the same broad tier as Li and Zeref; the passage does not document a corresponding level breakthrough for Zeref 910.
- Li observes that many of Zeref’s earlier creations were intended to deal with Zeref himself, rather than indiscriminately threaten others 943.
