Background / History

Kushina arrived in Konoha from the Land of Whirlpools and enrolled in the Ninja Academy. On her first day, she declared her goal of becoming Konoha's first female Hokage, only to be mocked by her classmates. Li Uchiha offered her friendship despite her initial anger at being pitied; she accepted in her characteristically proud manner. 8 9

Although she acted fearless toward bullies and trained intensely to improve, Kushina was lonely in Konoha. Li became her first friend in the village and helped her develop basic kunai-throwing skill, eventually enabling her to hit three bullseyes. 11 18 19

She was targeted by Sunagakure ninja because of her value as an Uzumaki and a potential jinchuriki. After being kidnapped, she was rescued by Li, an experience that deepened both her trust in him and her guilt over the risks he took for her. 19 21 22 28

The destruction of the Uzumaki clan devastated Kushina. Her parents were killed in the attack, leaving her traumatized, catatonic, and initially unable to eat or speak. Li remained at her side until she gradually returned to her usual lively disposition. 69 70 71 72

Kushina had been sent to Konoha to eventually become the Nine-Tails' jinchuriki. When Uzumaki Mito neared death, Kushina confided this fate to Li and Mikoto; she feared both the burden of containing the Tailed Beast and Mito's impending death.
