Background

During the Warring States period, the Uchiha were regarded as the foremost clan in the ninja world; only the Senju Clan could contend with them. Their Sharingan was considered superior to the Hyuga Clan's Byakugan, while the Hyuga themselves lived in the shadow of stronger clans. 5

The Uchiha and Senju jointly founded Konoha. After Madara Uchiha disappeared following his battle with Hashirama Senju, however, the clan ceased producing comparable powerhouses and gradually declined. Other clans—including the Hyuga—began openly challenging the Sharingan's prestige. 5 7

An early agreement reportedly cast the Senju as Konoha's public leadership and the Uchiha as its covert leadership through the Anbu. Following a violent conflict with Tobirama Senju, the clan relinquished its Anbu role, took control of the Konoha Military Police Force, and accepted restrictions on the Elder Council's involvement in combat. 1258 1359

The Military Police Force was not regarded as a prestigious posting by all clansmen. Core members were generally kept from its ranks, while younger Uchiha without advanced Sharingan or older members who had stalled at two tomoe were assigned there to satisfy Konoha. 31

Internal Politics

The clan was divided between two major ideological blocs:

• Hardline Faction — Revered Madara's legacy and sought to restore the Uchiha as the strongest clan in the ninja world. The Great Elder's faction was associated with this position and opposed Konoha's suppression. 33 35
• Moderate Faction — Favored peace, comfort, and continued submission to Konoha; it was described as the faction that had rejected Madara's return to war. 33

Although the clan had a formal head, its Elder Council controlled most resources and real authority. Competing elder factions routinely obstructed one another, weakening the clan through internal conflict. 1333

Sharingan

The Sharingan is the Uchiha's defining ocular inheritance. Though generally called a Kekkei Genkai, it is described as the manifestation of Yin power unique to the Uchiha bloodline: their eyes appear ordinary until that power is channeled. 291

• A One-Tomoe Sharingan can analyze an opponent's movement patterns, providing a major advantage against enemies of comparable rank. 12
• Sharingan awakenings may occur suddenly after emotional provocation. 10
• The Mangekyō Sharingan is an advanced state awakened through overwhelming negative emotion and grants powerful user-specific ocular techniques. 1286
• Transplanted Sharingan cannot be used to their full potential by non-Uchiha because they lack the clan's innate Yin power; once the eye's residual Yin power is exhausted, it can go blind. 291
• Not every Uchiha with a Sharingan becomes a capable shinobi. Clan members recognize that ocular inheritance alone does not guarantee talent in ninjutsu or taijutsu. 1394

Chakra Affinities

Most Uchiha possess Fire and Lightning chakra natures. Branch families that intermarried outside the clan may display other natures. 1291

• Fire Release — The clan's traditional specialty; its techniques include powerful large-scale flames. 36 49
• Lightning Release — Common enough within the clan to complement Sharingan-based combat perception; the Sharingan allows users to control high-speed techniques such as Chidori. 49 1290

Defection and Rise to Power

Under Li Uchiha's leadership, a large portion of the clan broke away from Konoha. The resulting conflict ended with Konoha's surrender and the imprisonment of captured Konoha shinobi at Hozuki Castle. 144 194

The victory transformed the Uchiha from a clan associated with Konoha into an independent military power feared across the ninja world. Even the revived Hashirama Senju ultimately compromised, and other villages struggled to accept that a single clan had defeated Konoha. 194

The clan subsequently expanded through conquest, coercion, and vassalage:

• The Kaguya Clan was forced into submission after Li used Kotoamatsukami on its leader, Kaguya Kuang. 200
• The Hyuga Clan swore fealty after being overwhelmed; Hiashi Hyuga was then controlled with Kotoamatsukami. 220
• The Yuki Clan accepted vassal status to escape Kirigakure's pursuit. 221
