Background

Founding and early history

Konoha was founded jointly by the Senju and Uchiha clans under Hashirama Senju and Madara Uchiha, with the stated goal of ending the Warring States era and bringing peace to the shinobi world 35 128.

Madara's final battle with Hashirama created the Valley of the End, where Konoha erected enormous statues of the two founders facing one another across a waterfall 81. After Madara's disappearance and Hashirama's death, the Senju-led village government increasingly suppressed the Uchiha, who believed their role as co-founders had been disregarded 35.

Later accounts state that the Uchiha once held authority over Konoha's Anbu, but withdrew after a major internal clash and instead took control of the Military Police Force; the Uchiha Elder Council was thereafter barred from participating in battles except under special circumstances 1258 1359.

Government and security

Population and military strength

• At one point, Konoha had fewer than one hundred publicly known Jōnin and fewer than thirty elite Jōnin; twenty of the visible Jōnin belonged to the Uchiha clan 30.
• Before its war with Li Uchiha's faction, Konoha's full strength was estimated at roughly 20,000 ninja 177.
• Casualties, wounded personnel, civilian-defense assignments, and the defections of the Hyuga and Senju clans reduced its immediately available force to approximately 8,000 ninja during the crisis at Jikyo Castle 177.
• Konoha later retained significant high-end fighters, including Jiraiya and Orochimaru, despite its loss of manpower and finances 213.

History

Uchiha division and the Nine-Tails incident

The divide between Konoha and the Uchiha deepened as the clan split into Hardline and Moderate factions. The Hardliners continued to revere Madara's ideal of Uchiha supremacy, while the Moderates sought a peaceful life within Konoha despite enduring political marginalization 33.

During the Nine-Tails' attack, more than half of Konoha was destroyed. Uzumaki Mito died resealing the beast, and Ziling Uzumaki became its new jinchūriki 80. The disaster left countless homes ruined and imposed severe reconstruction costs on the village 80.

Soon afterward, Li Uchiha led more than two hundred Uchiha clansmen away from Konoha. He rejected immediate flight because the group lacked a secure base and expected Konoha to pursue them 81. Their departure, the Nine-Tails attack, and the destruction of a subsequent Konoha pursuit force severely weakened the village 100.

Return of the Senju

After more than twenty years in seclusion, the Senju clan returned to Konoha in response to the Uchiha defection 100. Their leader, Sennu Senju, demanded the restoration of the clan's former territory, then occupied by destroyed civilian housing and reconstruction work. Hiruzen accepted because Konoha's weakened condition left him unable to refuse 100.

The Senju presence did not resolve Konoha's instability. Sennu pressed Hiruzen to destroy Li's faction before it grew stronger, while the remaining Uchiha resented being collectively branded as rebels and endured further suppression 118 124.

War with the Uchiha faction

Konoha sent an army of 10,000 ninja, led by Jiraiya and Orochimaru, against Hozuki Castle 135. Li's forces used the surrounding terrain, river obstacles, cliffs, and concealed routes to stall and outmaneuver the invaders 135 139.

The conflict escalated into a direct attack on Jikyo Castle. Li's Perfect Susanoo towered over the fortress and ultimately cut through its defenses, placing the civilian population behind the castle at risk 172. During the battle, the Hyuga and Senju clans abandoned Konoha, further undermining its ability to resist 176 177.

The war ended in less than ten days with Konoha's defeat. Konoha signed an unequal treaty with the victorious Uchiha faction, while the Land of Fire's daimyō supplied funds to begin rebuilding the village 194 199.

Recovery and subordination

Four years after the war, Konoha remained too weakened in manpower and finances to pursue the defected Hyuga and Senju clans, fearing that other villages would exploit any new conflict 204. Jikyo Castle was rebuilt with support from the Land of Fire's daimyō, and Konoha's economy largely recovered even though its military manpower remained limited 214.

Konoha later joined the Five Great Shinobi Countries' alliance against Mirai Uchiha's forces. Following the alliance's defeat, Minato Namikaze surrendered on Konoha's behalf and was permitted to become the Fourth Hokage 326.

Under the subsequent treaty, Konoha remained in existence but became subordinate to the Uchiha clan. It was required to provide thirty percent of its annual revenue, obey Uchiha orders, and submit inter-village disputes to Uchiha judgment 332.

Relationships

• Uchiha Clan — Co-founder of Konoha alongside the Senju clan; later subjected to political suppression, divided internally, and ultimately fought a war that ended in Konoha's defeat 35 33 194.
