After reading the planetary logs from a millennium ago, Hogg understood what had happened to the unfortunate Coral.
The plague mentioned in the logs was actually a Pariah Nexus activated by the Necrons. To the soulless Necrons, the Pariah Nexus was a battlefield weapon from the War in Heaven, capable of perfectly dampening the soul fluctuations and Warp links of the Old Ones' creations—the equivalent of a "cutting off the supply line" strategy.
Utilizing the properties of Blackstone, the Pariah Nexus directly enveloped Coral a thousand years ago. The local humans were not the Psionic Energy-wielding brats of the War in Heaven; their souls quickly withered, and they slowly turned into living dead in the literal sense, though they managed to seal the Necrons away before their own extinction.
One has to admit that the humans of a millennium ago, still possessing remnants of advanced technology, were truly fierce. Even trapped on a planet without spacefaring capabilities, they managed to seal a Necron tomb by mutually assured destruction.
After recounting the truth of what happened here and giving a primer on basic Necron units, the reconnaissance team continued toward the coordinates marked in the data. The fleet docked in orbit also dispatched a large number of engineers and landing craft to begin excavations.
The reunited team arrived at the location from the logs. It was a massive basin where several rift valleys tore through the rock layers. Destroyed vehicles and weapons were everywhere; the ground was covered in fine, glass-like shards melted by high-temperature energy weapons. Human skeletons and Necron remains were buried in the soil, and deep within the fissures, massive alloy plates sealed the Necron nest below.
As the saying goes, the rougher the seas, the more valuable the fish. Beneath Coral might lie the slumbering tomb of a Necron dynasty. As the ceiling of physical technology in the Warhammer universe, a Necron tomb was a massive treasure trove for humanity.
Captain Ginny of the 4th Company, who had arrived via landing craft as reinforcements, raised a question after sharing data with the recon team:
"Father, why is this race called the Necrons?"
Seeing his little darling had arrived, Hogg patiently explained:
"Just like the Eldar created by the Old Ones that I told you about before, the Necrons were once a short-lived race called the Necrontyr. Later, they grew jealous of the Old Ones' longevity and power and launched a war. Of course, they got beaten so badly by the Old Ones that they couldn't even recognize their own mothers and were driven back to their home world. That's when the turning point came."
The surrounding soldiers, full of gossip, listened to their old man's tale and couldn't help but stop their work. Annoyed, Hogg kicked Ross, who was hovering in front of him with a mohawk.
"Father, why did you hit me?" A bewildered Ross looked confused; could it be that his father didn't love him anymore?
"Cut the crap! Bragging is one thing, but don't stop working," Hogg continued his lecture.
"Later, The Deceiver, one of the gods of the physical universe known as the C'tan, appeared before the Necrontyr and tricked them, claiming he could strengthen them with a Biotransference technology.
But the truth was that after the conversion, the Necrontyr became skeleton robots made of Living Metal, and their souls were devoured by The Deceiver like a light snack.
The Necrontyr perished; all that remained was the AI race known as the Necrons, who refused to accept the facts. Later, the War in Heaven broke out, and the Necrons, having rapidly developed through C'tan technology, became the C'tan's slave army and began a brutal war against the Old Ones' faction.
Back then, the Warp was still a calm river. It was this war that stirred the waters, which is why today's Warp is like a septic tank."
The outpost was quickly established, and after a long burn from a melta, a hole was cut into the metal plate door. A vast underground space appeared before the Blackwatch.
The ground was paved with human skeletons and decomposed remains. The entire underground space originally had only a small passage; it had been blasted into its current state by the weapons of the humans at the time.
Buildings emitting a peculiar green light appeared before everyone's eyes. Some Tech-priests screamed in binary with excitement, performing strange dances on the ground to praise the Father of Black Light.
Ignoring these embarrassing creatures, the group organized their gear and began to enter. The sturdy and durable Hogg took the lead as a meat shield, followed by the guard in Terminator armor, while the Tech-priests and the physically fragile Eldar were protected in the center as ranged fire support.
Hogg, who was a loyalist Imperium player in his past life, didn't know much about the Necron codex background, and it was only thanks to his good brother's introduction that he could distinguish the size of the current Necron tomb. A candle was stuck on top of everyone's heads and lit, with the explanation that this was a necessary ritual for archaeological work on ancient Terra.
The passage, crafted entirely from black metal, was seamless. On the ground lay the remains of destroyed Necron soldiers and Gauss Flayers; soon, these items would be packed and sent to the surface for study.
The cluttered ground and damaged buildings proved that this tomb world was essentially paralyzed. Even the Canoptek Scarabs, which served as basic engineers, did not appear, likely because they had been asleep for too long. Hogg felt relieved; after all, the Necrons' weapons dealt true damage, and one careless mistake could lead to casualties.
As they pushed further, chamber after chamber was discovered, containing sealed Necron soldiers. Hogg didn't disturb them, merely resealing the chambers.
The finished weapons in the armory were well-preserved and immediately packed for transport, but an accident occurred when they reached the core area.
As Hogg entered the core area, a squad of Necron soldiers appeared before him. Their silver-gray Living Metal skeletons and terrifying skulls flashing with green light looked exactly like T-800 Terminators. The moment they spotted the intruders, the Gauss Blasters in the Necrons' hands fired green disintegration beams.
Bolters began to roar, and at the same time, shields emitting emerald-green barriers blocked the team's front. The Ork skulls mounted on them began to laugh maniacally, emitting a massive Waaaagh battle cry, perfectly resisting the destruction of the disintegration beams.
The shield-bearing guard followed Hogg as they charged into the Necrons. Their smaller stature gave them more agile footwork and a smaller target profile.
Bolters fired at point-blank range, shattering the Necrons with 30-round magazines. Then, they switched to melee weapons and began to charge at the increasing number of Necrons.
Two mechanical tentacles unfurled to lash at the enemies, and the power claws, flashing with disintegration fields, could tear apart the Living Metal bodies with a single strike. The powerful Gauss Blaster beams were neutralized by dark red Psionic Energy. Hogg's destructive power was perfectly displayed, like a sharp blade grinding the Necron swarm to dust. A shrill alarm sounded, and more Necron soldiers appeared, but they were all slaughtered by Hogg one by one.
The team began to advance, the sound of magnetic boots colliding with the ground ringing out. The Banshees, unable to disrupt the enemy with Psionic Energy screams, held a shuriken pistol in one hand and a monofilament blade in the other, using the Space Marine cover to split the battlefield.
Soon, the Necron reinforcements couldn't keep up with the Blackwatch's slaughter. Just then, Hogg felt an anomaly in the spatial fluctuations. His fire platform locked onto a target via his consciousness and fired a preemptive shot at a corner. The plasma spark hit a suddenly appearing target: a Deathmark sniper.
"Idiot! Sniping indoors? In such a hurry to visit your own grave on Qingming Festival, are you!"
"Boys, charge with me! There's a Deathmark sniper, this tomb must have good stuff! Kill them, and the loot is ours... Waaaagh!" Hearing there was good loot, everyone's eyes glowed green as they charged forward for their lives.
"Waaaagh!!!! Charge!! Kill these damn xenos!"
I read basically all the comments. The author plays tabletop games and usually likes to focus on the fighting. If there are any vague or inaccurate settings, feel free to point them out, hehe.
