Hogg wasn't worried about Karama for even a moment. He barely knew her, and even if she was a Psyker, he could squash her with one finger. He'd just treat her like a hired hand.
As a local wealthy man, Karama naturally wasn't allowed to keep any of her belongings. Before she could officially enter the house, she had to clean herself up—at the very least, wash off all that dirt.
Watching the new maid sit at the dining table and wolf down food, Hogg and Dorn were both curious about why she'd fallen on such hard times. She didn't look bad at all, yet she couldn't even afford a meal.
After polishing off a full eleven pounds of whole-wheat bread, Karama finally looked satisfied. She slumped back in her chair, sipping wine as she explained:
"Take the cost of that meal out of my wages later. I usually don't eat much. I only ate so much this time because I'd been hungry for ages. You don't mind, do you?"
Hogg and Dorn hurriedly shook their heads, saying they ate even more than she did and that a wealthy household like theirs didn't care about a little food. But why was she in such a sorry state?
Hearing someone ask her that for the first time, Karama nearly burst into tears. She quickly gulped down a few mouthfuls of wine and began telling them about her life:
