Background / History

Early life on Macragge

Before the Emperor found him, Guilliman was adopted by Konor, the Governor of Macragge, and raised under the care of Konor’s steward, Tarasha Euten. Konor was later assassinated during a coup, leaving Euten as Guilliman’s surviving parental figure. 29

By the time the Emperor arrived, Guilliman had ruled Macragge for five years. The realm was self-sufficient, traded with nearby systems, and formed the core of the prosperous 500 Worlds of Ultramar. He later received the Ultramarines and conquered more worlds than any Primarch except the Luna Wolves, while continuing to prioritize the administration of Ultramar. 29

Alliance with Hogg

When Hogg Menethil visited Macragge, Guilliman received him publicly and later granted Blackwatch a remote sub-sector of Death Worlds near Alicia for Legion recruitment. He viewed the concession as inexpensive and useful for strengthening the relationship between their Legions. 30 31

Guilliman later helped educate Angron, teaching him combat command and operational logistics while Hogg handled science and Legion management. 40

Ork invasion and the Webway campaign

During the Ork assault on Ultramar, Guilliman commanded nearly 200,000 Ultramarines and rapidly mobilized almost 17 million Imperial Guard. Macragge endured a month-long campaign before he departed through the Webway to reinforce Alicia and support Hogg. 157

His force became stranded amid the Ork invasion around the Solar System. Commanding from the Macragge’s Honour, Guilliman ordered Exterminatus to force a path toward Terra and promised Perturabo that reinforcements were coming. 161

First Regency

Guilliman arrived late to the ruined Catachan battlefield and blamed himself for failing to prevent Hogg’s abduction by the Chaos Gods. The Emperor nevertheless named him his “proudest son” and entrusted the Imperium’s governance to him, ordering him to establish the State Church and support the Blacklight Sect as a counterweight to faith’s chaotic energy. 281

After the Great Heresy, Guilliman led the counter-offensive that stabilized the Solar System. A Terra conference recognized him as Imperial Regent, after which he issued decrees to reorganize the Imperium. 282

His Codex Astartes dismantled the immense Legions into Chapters. Blackwatch was partitioned under his supervision in 507.M31, leading Blackwatch to sever ties with the Ultramarines and denounce Guilliman as a traitor. 283

A later account records Guilliman’s health failing under the strain of rule, followed by his death and burial on Macragge after his choice of Angron as Regent was rejected by the Council of High Lords. 286

Imperium Secundus

Guilliman later became the public ruler of Imperium Secundus. Though Hogg maneuvered him into accepting the throne, Guilliman embraced the role before a galactic broadcast and led the vanguard of the Indomitus Crusade to reclaim Terra. 555

He concentrated on administration, development, and the separation of military and political authority, while other Primarchs handled their respective domains. Under his administrative oversight, Imperium Secundus developed rapidly through planned production, audits, anti-corruption measures, and expansion of its Star Gate and Nila Terminal Machine networks. 547 556

Corinne possession and the Kairos Fateweaver expedition

For six years, Guilliman secretly controlled Corinne’s body and mind to complete administrative work. He had acquired a Biotransference Device from Trazyn, allowing him to transfer his consciousness while preserving his Primarch thought model. 628 633

While investigating Kairos Fateweaver, he fought Sera using orbital bombardment and a psionic spear. Hogg subsequently used him as bait in a trap, severing Guilliman at the waist and extracting enough blood from him to leave him severely weakened after his body was restored. 729 732 747

Appearance

Guilliman is described as a blue Primarch giant. During operations as “Cat-lliman,” he wears enormous black-and-red power armor whose active frame reaches roughly five meters in height. 367 720

  • Associated with the Ultramarines’ blue image and the 500 Worlds of Ultramar. 29 157
  • Has adopted Hogg’s clothing and persona as part of disguises, unsuccessfully attempting to pass himself off as Hogg before Cat-folk merchants. 720
  • His Dark Knight armor features an ominous black-and-red scheme and scarlet eye lenses. 720

Personality

Guilliman is intensely responsible, methodical, and driven to impose order through planning. He processes workloads that would overwhelm mortal administrators, tracks military strength in exact figures, and repeatedly attempts to solve systemic problems through standardization, logistics, and institutional reform. 29 220 667 669

He is also highly conscious of dignity and public image. He can maintain a polished political smile while privately furious, but humiliation—particularly at the hands of his brothers or the Emperor—often provokes resentment, self-doubt, or reckless attempts to reclaim his reputation. 529 530 691

Despite his reputation as an administrator, Guilliman seeks direct combat and duels. He recognizes that his habit of overthinking can make him hesitate in battle, yet he insists that humanity can overcome fate through will and preparation. 596 721 729

His attachment to Lady Euten remains one of his greatest vulnerabilities. Her disappointment devastates him, while her approval of Hogg repeatedly fuels his jealousy and insecurity. 157 530

Abilities & Skills

Administrative mastery

Guilliman’s defining talent is administration and operational management, disparagingly termed “Super Office Work.”

  • Completes routine reports that would be chaotic for mortal officials in less than an hour. 29
  • Processed the City of Perfection’s entire personnel list, including executions and repatriations, within days. 220
  • Restored the half-paralyzed Imperium’s southern frontier and accumulated major reserves for the Indomitus Crusade within 173 years of the Council of High Lords’ purge. 728
  • Advanced standardized equipment, modular supply systems, and mass-production infrastructure across the Imperium’s forces. 669
  • His administrative burden has repeatedly driven him toward exhaustion; during an earlier Regency, two millennia of rule left him gray-haired and near death. 691

Strategic command and logistics

Guilliman combines large-scale mobilization with detailed logistical oversight.

  • Mobilized nearly 17 million Imperial Guard and his Ultramarines to defend Macragge from an Ork invasion. 157
  • Commanded an Ultramarines force of 150,000 while forcing a route through the Ork blockade around the Solar System. 161
  • Claimed he could commit 250,000 Ultramarines to an expedition and possessed sufficient Astra Militarum strength to seize Holy Terra if given the opportunity. 667
  • Uses orbital firepower pragmatically, ordering Exterminatus or sustained Lance bombardment when ground engagements risk becoming prolonged. 161 729

Dueling and combat skill

Despite the administrative reputation imposed on him, Guilliman is a highly capable Primarch combatant.

  • His combat technique is described as top-tier, and he trained Angron in battlefield command. 40
  • He is repeatedly called the “Strongest Duelist,” though the title is also used mockingly by his brothers. 29 367
  • His confidence can become a liability: Hogg defeated him easily during Guilliman’s attack on Macragge, and Nurgle incapacitated him with a single strike during a later battle. 530 368

Psychic power

Guilliman initially suppressed his psychic potential and maintained a “psychic muggle” facade. 220

  • Awakened as a psionic warrior while defending Holy Terra, using flight, shields, and thrown psionic spears to suppress a Khorne daemon army alone. 312
  • His psychic outburst alongside Hogg and Jonson caused widespread battlefield destruction. 312
  • By the Kairos Fateweaver campaign, he considered himself capable of bombarding an entire planet with sufficient time and used a psionic spear against Sera. 720 729
  • Received temporary blessings from Khorne, Nurgle, and the Emperor, granting increased strength, resilience, anti-sorcery protection, resistance to corruption, and golden flames effective against Chaos entities. 367

Biotransference and consciousness control

Through a deal with Trazyn, Guilliman obtained a Biotransference Device capable of transferring his consciousness into another body. 628

  • Controlled Corinne’s body and mind for six years to perform administrative work covertly. 628
  • The technology can replicate a Primarch’s thought model without data corruption. 633
  • His use of Corinne’s body caused conflict with Hogg, Dorn, the Emperor, and Lady Euten. 628 630
