Background / History

As a child, Luffy grew up alongside Ace under Garp's care. He wanted to become stronger and sail to sea with Ace, despite Garp attempting to impose Marine discipline on them. Ace defended Luffy when Garp struck him with the “Fist of Love,” and the two later shared oath-wine to become brothers 74 78.

Luffy inherited an unusually influential lineage: Garp is the Marine Hero, while Dragon leads the Revolutionary Army. Shanks entrusted his straw hat to Luffy, marking him as part of the “new era” in Whitebeard's recollection 75 76 77.

Personality

Luffy is direct, reckless, and unafraid of figures vastly stronger than himself. He openly declares his ambition to become Pirate King before Whitebeard and refuses to retreat even when Kizaru and the other Admirals block his path 77 94.

His defining motivation at Marineford is loyalty to Ace. Ace's attempts to drive him away do not deter him; Luffy answers simply that he is Ace's brother and continues advancing through the battlefield 78.

Despite his impulsiveness, he can adapt quickly in battle. Against Mihawk, he uses Buggy's Chop-Chop abilities as a temporary shield and distraction, then escapes while Mihawk is occupied 84. He later uses a thrown mast and the resulting ice debris as a feint to bypass the Three Admirals rather than confronting them directly 94.

Luffy's determination also inspires those around him. His relentless charge toward Ace restores the morale of the pirates when the Marine encirclement and artillery fire have left them on the verge of collapse 93.

Marineford War

Luffy arrives at Marineford aboard a flying ship with Jinbe, Crocodile, Ivankov, and Impel Down prisoners. After sinking due to the seawater, he is rescued by Jinbe, locates Ace on the Execution Platform, and announces that he has come to save him 75.

His arrival disrupts both sides of the war. Jinbe abandons his Seven Warlord position to join him, while Luffy stops Crocodile from attacking Whitebeard because Ace respects Whitebeard 76.

Luffy challenges Whitebeard's claim to become Pirate King, then joins the advancing pirates after warning that Ace's execution will be brought forward 77. He repeatedly survives through the intervention of allies: Ivankov saves him from Kizaru, Jinbe confronts Moria and Mihawk for him, Hancock provides Ace's shackles key, and Vista engages Mihawk to secure his escape route 77 80 83 84.

Luffy's persistence becomes a rallying point for the pirate forces. After the Marines destroy their fleet and tighten the encirclement, his charge toward the route opened by Oars helps restore the Whitebeard Pirates' will to advance 93.

After reaching the Three Admirals, Luffy throws a mast as a diversion, activates Gear Second, and slips past them using scattered ice as cover. He defeats an elite Navy officer using the Six Powers but is then pierced through the shoulder by Aokiji's ice blade 94 95 96. Marco arrives in time to stop Aokiji's attempted finishing blow, allowing Luffy to survive and preserving the pirates' effort to rescue Ace 96.
