When Gaino said he was going to train them, they were all filled with joy. Bardack, the warrior who was especially excited, showed it most of all.
Bardack said, "The King is going to lead our training himself? That's wonderful! When do we start?"
Seeing Bardack's expression, Gaino thought, As expected, he's a training-obsessed battle maniac. Kakarot later became just as devoted to martial arts. He probably inherited that strength from Bardack. Though Bardack is a Low-Class Warrior, he gradually rose to become a high-class warrior through his own efforts. Talent doesn't determine how far you'll go. Only through constant effort can you become the one standing at the top.
Gaino said, "Training starts now. Every one of you has a Gravity Chamber at home. Go back and set it to twenty times normal gravity. Getting used to the gravity inside is the first step."
At last, everyone understood why a Gravity Chamber had been built in every home. So that was the reason. It seemed their King really had planned far ahead.
Bardack gave Gaino a brief bow, then hurried back home. Seeing how eager he was, Gaino shook his head.
After all the Saiyans had gone home, Laiya appeared beside Gaino and said, "Big brother Gaino, Planet Saiyan's gravity is ten times Earth's. Our old spaceships were calibrated for Earth's gravity, but the Gravity Chambers are calibrated for Planet Saiyan's. Can they handle that much weight?"
"No," Gaino said.
"But there is one person who can withstand that much gravity."
"Oh? Who? Dad or Mom?"
Gaino shook his head.
"Not them? Dad and Mom are both elite warriors! Who else could withstand that kind of gravitational pressure?"
Gaino said slowly, "The warrior Bardack."
"Bardack? You mean he can withstand the gravitational pressure?"
"Yes, Bardack. His strength isn't much to speak of right now, but the farther he goes, the faster he'll improve. He might even catch up to you."
Laiya said, "Impossible. How could Bardack catch up to me? I can already transform into a Super Saiyan. He's nowhere near becoming one! He hasn't even reached the required base power. How could he possibly catch up?"
"Laiya, don't be overconfident. Anything is possible. Bardack's pursuit of strength surpasses that of every other Saiyan. His passion for it is etched into his bones. We still need to work hard, or someone might surpass us. Then where would that leave me, the King of the Saiyans?"
Laiya covered her mouth and laughed. "So big brother Gaino gets scared, too. You're really that reluctant to give up the Saiyan throne?"
"How could I be attached to something like that? My goal is to become the strongest person in All Universe. These worldly things are only fleeting. Once I reach a certain level of strength, I'll give up the throne and pursue new heights."
Laiya said, "I know you wouldn't be attached to something like that, big brother Gaino. I was only teasing you!"
"Big brother Gaino, sense them. Most of them couldn't withstand twenty times normal gravity. Huh, you were right! Bardack really did withstand it."
Gaino and Laiya sensed Bardack's energy together.
At that moment, Bardack was drenched in sweat inside the Gravity Chamber at home. The pressure had bent his body forward, but he held on. His face was red as he used every bit of strength he had to resist the tremendous force. Little by little, he straightened his back, until he was standing upright.
As Laiya sensed everything Bardack was doing, she realized that he really wasn't someone to underestimate. He had withstood such tremendous pressure. She remembered how, during her first gravity training session, the pressure had made it difficult for her even to walk. Bardack had adapted to the Gravity Chamber's pressure in an incredibly short time.
Big brother Gaino was right. Even though she could now transform into a Super Saiyan, that didn't mean someone else couldn't overtake her. She needed to work hard. Since arriving on Planet Saiyan, Laiya hadn't trained much at all.
Bardack straightened up and slowly walked forward, one step at a time. As time passed, his steps grew faster and faster. At last, he began throwing punches and kicking. Sensing Bardack's progress, Gaino said, "Looks like Bardack has adapted to the pressure of twenty times normal gravity."
Then he turned to Laiya. "Laiya, everyone else is training, so let's train too. Planet Saiyan isn't suitable for us to train on. Let's go somewhere else."
"Sure! I haven't trained much since I came to Planet Saiyan. Come on, big brother Gaino, let's go!"
"Let's go." As soon as Gaino said the words, he and Laiya vanished from where they stood.
They arrived on a desolate planet. There, Gaino and Laiya activated the Gravity Technique. Gaino increased the gravitational pressure to one hundred times normal, while Laiya set hers to seventy times. She didn't want to be crushed flat—that would be embarrassing.
As Gaino and Laiya activated the Gravity Technique, the ground beneath them cracked apart. The planet's surface couldn't withstand such immense pressure.
The pressure weighed down on Gaino. He tested it and decided that one hundred times normal gravity was manageable and just right for training. He immediately got started.
First, he ran and jumped to warm up. Then he powered up and began practicing punches and kicks.
Watching Gaino, Laiya thought, What a freak. He makes one hundred times normal gravity look so easy. Seventy times is already making me miserable. Big brother Gaino really is as powerful as ever.
She would start by adapting to the seventyfold gravity. Laiya began walking forward. A deep footprint appeared beneath her with every step. The immense pressure caused the cells in her body to keep changing, transforming toward the full-power Super Saiyan 1 form.
Before they knew it, a whole day had passed on the planet. When Gaino finally stopped training, the sky had darkened.
"It's already night. We should head back, Laiya." Gaino turned around and saw her asleep, leaning against a large rock. It seemed the little girl had worn herself out today.
Gaino picked Laiya up and used Instant Transmission to return to Planet Saiyan. He carried her straight to his room, laid her on the bed, then went to find Dr. Laika. He wanted Dr. Laika to study the Senzu Beans and see if technology could be used to cultivate them.
