Chapter 25: The Tragic Fate of a Money-Spending Unlucky Player
Shen Mo knew that Sasuke's desire for jars might be the strongest among all his current customers.
First, it was because of his obsession.
His entire clan, including his parents, had been slaughtered overnight. Worse, the person who had done it was his beloved older brother. If someone with a weaker mind had gone through this, they might have gone completely insane. The fact that Sasuke had made it through could be attributed in large part to the hatred sustaining him.
Second, it was because he was young.
The younger someone was, the more emotional their judgment of things tended to be.
It was easy for them to get stuck in a dead end.
Perhaps he could guide him properly?
"Sasuke." Shen Mo called softly, looking at the boy in front of him. "I have to remind you that the value of the items in the jars varies."
"I know." Sasuke's voice gradually calmed down from its earlier excitement. "Take the Gourmet Series jars from before. Those few recipes would help a chef far more than some rare ingredients, and would therefore be much more precious."
"Exactly."
Shen Mo nodded slightly. It seemed Sasuke still retained a certain ability to think things through.
He continued, "But the strength you seek is far more complicated than becoming a chef. There are simply too many methods and paths to choose from. Have you thought about which direction you want to take to become stronger?"
Sasuke froze.
He had only thought about becoming stronger. How could he have considered the direction?
"Apparently not." Shen Mo started walking, signaling for him to continue talking as they went. "I've sold many jars, but among the customers who pursued strength, some spent tremendous costs and even exhausted themselves mentally, yet still ended up weaker than those who spent far less. Do you know why?"
"..." Sasuke thought for a while before giving his answer. "Talent?"
The treasures inside the jars could be used to increase one's strength, but even with treasures of equal value, talent still mattered.
Take that man, for example.
No matter how much Sasuke hated him, he had to admit that the man's talent was truly terrifying.
He had once been someone Sasuke worshiped immensely.
"Talent can also be obtained from me." Shen Mo gently shook his head and gave him the answer. "It's luck."
Opening chests was, of course, a contest of luck.
The only person who could stand against a European Dog was a god of wealth.
Sasuke was clearly somewhat confused.
In his mind, as long as he opened enough jars, he should be able to become stronger.
"You think those few recipes would help a chef more than rare ingredients." Shen Mo still used Teuchi as an example, then gave a mysterious smile. "But among the Gourmet Series jars, there is also a special ability known as the 'God Tongue.' It allows someone to easily identify the tiniest flaws in food. A person with such a tongue could rely on that alone to advance much faster and farther than an ordinary chef."
In layman's terms, it was a cheat ability.
The God Tongue naturally couldn't be this cheap.
But Shen Mo deliberately put it that way.
He wanted Sasuke to develop some expectations about luck.
Before the results were revealed.
Everyone hoped they might be blessed by the god of luck before opening a chest. Even after their African bloodline had already been confirmed, and they desperately mocked themselves, they would still look forward to the possibility of secretly immigrating to Europe the moment they opened a chest.
Sasuke's growth rate was definitely fast.
To prevent him from clearing the game in a short time and losing interest in the jars, Shen Mo had to cultivate and hint at certain things.
Or rather, tempt him!
"Such a miraculous ability can be obtained directly as well?" Sasuke found it unbelievable.
When he had just watched Teuchi open the Gourmet Series jars, what he had truly valued were the miraculous Experience Orbs, the fruits that could increase physical fitness, and the powerful skill books.
"Heh." Shen Mo chuckled twice. "In my jars, there are all kinds of items you could never imagine."
He suddenly stopped walking.
He reached out and lightly tapped Sasuke between the eyebrows.
In an instant.
Sasuke's expression went blank.
All kinds of horrifying images flashed through his mind.
He saw someone holding a seven-colored lotus and smashing open the continent, flames scorching the heavens. It was known as a Strange Fire.
He saw someone controlling a gigantic Puppet that transformed into a drill and broke through the sky. It was known as a Mecha!
He also saw the incredibly miraculous Devil Fruit, the Sword Immortal who could split heaven and earth with a single strike, and a Stand possessing countless unbelievable abilities.
All of these were real powers, mighty forces that did not belong to this world!
Sasuke's body began trembling uncontrollably.
His face was filled with crazed excitement and longing.
With such infinite possibilities...
What did that man, who considered himself powerful, amount to?
Sasuke was even starting to impatiently imagine what kind of astonished and shocked expression his older brother—that powerful and cruel man—would reveal when confronted with these unimaginable powers.
It would be truly wonderful.
Just imagining the scene in his mind gave him such a pleasant feeling that he almost wanted to laugh aloud in the middle of the night.
Sasuke had suddenly been shown the gates to a new world. His long-desperate, gloomy, and anguished heart unexpectedly began to look forward to the future!
"Now you should understand what kind of existence my jars truly are, right?" Shen Mo looked at him meaningfully and spread his arms wide. "Endless worlds, endless powers, endless possibilities. If your luck is good enough, you might even obtain the power to change your fate tonight."
"I can't hold back any longer!"
Sasuke covered his forehead, a crazed smile on his face that he could no longer suppress.
After all, he was still just a child around middle-school age.
At this moment, his mind had already begun imagining it.
What kind of power would he obtain tonight?
Unfortunately.
Shen Mo looked at him with considerable amusement.
Poor child. He would probably never know in this lifetime what would come out of the jars, and it had very little to do with luck.
Because—
The official in charge was secretly manipulating the odds.
"Then..." Shen Mo wore a sincere smile. "I wish you good luck in advance."
"I'll definitely open something powerful!" Sasuke was inexplicably confident. Then he quickened his pace and led the way.
Shen Mo suppressed his laughter, picked Hikari—who had already begun dozing and was barely holding on to his shoulder—up into his arms, and followed beside Sasuke. When they passed the alley where they had just discarded the Anbu ninja, he glanced inside.
It was empty.
Had they left?
His methods had been crude, but apart from the mental terror, they had not caused any serious harm. After all, his objective had already been achieved, and there was no need to waste more money.
He simply didn't know.
What kind of reaction the already aged Third Hokage would have.
And Danzo, known as Konoha's pot king.
Shen Mo glanced at the system in his mind. The number representing his Trading Points remained calm and steady.
Don't stop voting for recommendations. I'll do my best to keep updating every day.
