Background / History

Orochimaru trained under the Third, Sarutobi Hiruzen, alongside Jiraiya and Tsunade. The three were classmates who became the Sannin, but Orochimaru eventually abandoned the loyalties his former teammates retained toward Konoha 2 84 100.

He was present during the aftermath of Nawaki’s death. While Jiraiya warned Tsunade against viewing her brother’s body, Orochimaru coldly remarked that she would not be able to recognize it 78.

Orochimaru later recruited Kabuto Yakushi after explaining that Danzō had engineered Kabuto’s fatal confrontation with Nonō. Kabuto joined him while searching for his own identity and became his subordinate 90.

Before the events surrounding Tsunade’s recruitment, Orochimaru had also left an organization because Itachi Uchiha was stronger than him. He admitted that obtaining Itachi was an unattainable ambition and turned his attention toward Sasuke instead 26.

Appearance

  • Serpentlike eyes: Narrow, sinister slit pupils are repeatedly emphasized 6 60.
  • Long tongue: Used both as a threatening mannerism and as a weapon capable of binding and throwing opponents 6 96 101.
  • Alterable body: Can stretch his neck, twist around an opponent, and transform his lower body into a snake’s tail 2 98.
  • Female guise: Initially encounters Lin Mu in the appearance of a beautiful woman. When enraged over the stolen cells, this form develops a green face, fangs, and a snake’s tail 2 3.
  • Injured arms: After fighting Hiruzen, his arms are heavily bandaged; beneath the wrappings, they appear blackened and skeletal 60 90.
  • Borrowed appearance: Tsunade’s blows eventually strip away part of his outer face, exposing the different face of the body he has taken over 102.

Personality

Orochimaru is cautious and calculating when facing an unknown threat. Rather than immediately attack Lin Mu, he offers personal instruction while privately assessing the boy’s unexplained growth, his own depleted chakra, and the risk of defeat 97.

His scientific curiosity is inseparable from cruelty. Lin Mu’s regeneration and Wood Style Body excite him enough to continue fighting despite a deep shoulder wound. He deliberately breaks the boy’s bones and intensifies his pain in an attempt to expose greater potential 98.

He treats grief, insecurity, and personal attachment as tools of manipulation. He offers Tsunade the return of her loved ones, exploits her fear of blood, and arranges for Sasuke to be overwhelmed so that the boy will seek power from him 68 143. His confidence is not absolute: he fears Itachi and experiences genuine terror when Lin Mu’s senjutsu-enhanced attack threatens his life 26 98.

Abilities & Skills

Living Corpse Reincarnation

Orochimaru can take over another person’s body through Living Corpse Reincarnation, making powerful bodies central to his pursuit of prolonged life 2 82.

  • The female form encountered by Lin Mu is identified as one of his previously used bodies 2.
  • His borrowed body becomes visible beneath his damaged outer face during the battle with Tsunade 102.
  • He targets Lin Mu’s Wood Style Body and Sasuke’s body as prospective vessels 82 143.
  • His existing vessel is not indefinitely sustainable; its deterioration creates urgency in his plan to obtain Sasuke 143.
  • His declaration of “true immortality” is his own claim, not proof that he cannot be killed 98 102.

Serpentine Physiology and Survival

Special ninjutsu and bodily modifications have made Orochimaru’s body almost serpentine 98.

  • Constriction: Wraps around Lin Mu tightly enough to break multiple bones 98.
  • Extensible tongue: Throws Jiraiya into the ground and restrains Tsunade 96 101.
  • Body shedding: Escapes the damage from Lin Mu’s senjutsu-infused Rasengan by emerging unharmed from his damaged body 99.
  • Underground escape: Sinks into the ground to withdraw after the Sannin battle 102.
  • Limits: His resilience does not eliminate pain or exhaustion, and his crippled arms leave him dependent on Kabuto for assistance 60 86 98.

Impure World Reincarnation

Orochimaru uses the forbidden Impure World Reincarnation technique to summon the dead as combatants 7.

  • Summons Senju Hashirama and Senju Tobirama against Hiruzen 7.
  • Inserts talisman-bearing kunai into their heads and directs them to attack 7.
  • Attempts to raise a third coffin, which Hiruzen prevents from fully emerging 7.
  • Offers to resurrect Nawaki and Dan Katō in exchange for Tsunade healing his arms; the proposed resurrection requires two living sacrifices 68 83.

Snake Techniques and Summons

Orochimaru employs snakes as weapons, proxies, and large-scale combat support 6 82 90.

  • Hidden Shadow Snake Hands: Releases a massive python from his mouth during his fight with Hiruzen 6.
  • Snake clone: Speaks through a giant snake to interrogate Lin Mu without placing his real body at risk 81 82.
  • Two-Headed Giant Snake: A summon with exceptional defenses and brute strength; Lin Mu ultimately kills it 92 97.
  • Manda: The Snake King fights for Orochimaru through an exchange of benefits rather than unconditional loyalty. He demands sacrifices and may turn against Orochimaru if he cannot maintain sufficient strength 100.
  • Concealed snake attack: A tiny snake is discovered inside Lin Mu’s chest, only centimeters from his heart. Lin Mu and Tsunade conclude it was likely planted while Orochimaru coiled around him 107 108.

Scientific Research and Cursed Seals

Orochimaru maintains hidden laboratories equipped with precision instruments and tanks containing experimental subjects that are neither fully human nor beast 1.

  • Studies Hashirama cells, though he admits that his experiments almost never succeeded 82.
  • Recognizes that Lin Mu’s Wood Release is purer and stronger than his experimental results could explain 82.
  • Incorrectly attributes Lin Mu’s abilities to dormant Senju ancestry awakened by the stolen cells 82.
  • Personally trains the Sound Four, whose abilities include Cursed Seals, barriers, and sealing techniques 5 149.
  • Uses Sasuke’s desire for strength to draw him toward the dangerous power of the Cursed Seal 143 145.

Combat and Infiltration

Orochimaru combines technical superiority with deception and psychological pressure 6 97.

  • Impersonates the Kazekage during the attack on Konoha 5 6.
  • Emerges unscathed from Hiruzen’s combined Earth and Fire Style attack 6.
  • Overwhelms Lin Mu’s sword defense and pierces his chest despite being injured and low on chakra 97.
  • Wields a longsword from his mouth while using his body to restrain opponents 98.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Longsword: Used for thrusts against Lin Mu and attacks on Tsunade; its name is not given in the supplied chapters 96 97 98.
  • Kunai with paper talismans: Embedded in the reincarnated Hokages to establish control 7.
  • Hashirama cells: Kept in his secret laboratory before Lin Mu steals and absorbs them 1 3.
  • Secret laboratories: Include a concealed facility in the forest beside Konoha, stocked with research instruments and experimental subjects 1.
