Background / History

Yumi was raised in an isolated mountain village in the Land of Hot Water, where she was prepared from childhood as a sacrifice for the Great Black Buddha Mother. She was made to pray, chant, study rituals, and await sacrifice, but secretly researched the entity and escaped after discovering that its weakness was its physical form. Her grandmother, Aikawa Mayu, later claimed that Yumi had only been allowed to leave because the village willed it. 50 51 52

After Uchiha Naoki was critically wounded and drifted to the Land of Hot Water, Yumi found him on a beach near Kannazuki Town. She nursed him through more than a month of unconsciousness, but used an untested procedure that saved his life by sacrificing his soul to the Great Black Buddha Mother. 34 50

Yumi initially sought to bind Naoki to her, demanding ten years of service in repayment and eventually making him submit as her servant under the name Anu. She could exploit the Buddha Mother’s connection to inflict soul erosion and warn Naoki that his nightmares could become reality. 35 37 38 39

Her relationship with Naoki changed after Todo Ichiro abducted her. Though initially resistant to her control, Naoki tracked the kidnappers to Todo’s castle and killed him before he could assault her. The rescue left Yumi more openly affectionate and dependent on Naoki, while he began protecting and treating her injuries. 41 42 43

As Naoki’s soul erosion worsened, Yumi admitted her responsibility and led him toward the mountain village and the Great Black Buddha Mother’s cave in search of a solution. The villagers captured them, identifying Naoki as the Buddha Mother’s chosen vessel. 46 50 51

Imprisoned by the villagers, Yumi escaped by deceiving and killing her guards. She confronted and killed Aikawa Mayu while trying to learn how to save Naoki, then entered the cave despite her fear of it. 52

Yumi endured severe injuries to reach Naoki and sacrificed herself to break the Great Black Buddha Mother’s hold over him. Her death enabled Naoki to resist the entity and destroy its physical form with her dagger. In Naoki’s later dream, she tells him that she never regretted finding him by the seaside. 53 54 56
