Background / History
Athrun is the only son of Patrick Zala, PLANT's Minister of Defense and later chairman. His privileged upbringing, talent, appearance, and engagement to Lacus Clyne make him a conspicuous figure at ZAFT's elite military academy, where he is one of the celebrated “F4” alongside Yzak Joule, Nicol Amalfi, and Dearka Elsman. Despite his family position, he is known as humble and melancholic rather than arrogant. 3
He is an elite student who graduates first in his academy class and is among the few cadets able to defeat combat instructor Blade Fred in a direct melee duel. He also develops a competitive training relationship with Ino Kamal. 27 53 212
Athrun's mother, Lenore Zala, was killed in the Bloody Valentine tragedy. Visiting her memorial on Junius strengthens his belief that peace must sometimes be protected through fighting, even as he remains deeply uneasy with the war's cost. 72
His engagement to Lacus was arranged by their fathers when Athrun was fourteen. Both understand the political responsibility attached to it, but neither is certain their affection is romantic love; Athrun is notably awkward and feels unworthy around her. 19 125
Appearance
Athrun is a handsome young Coordinator with blue hair, sharp green eyes, and a refined face that has grown more severe with age. 3 27 151
- Blue hair. 125 151
- Green eyes described as carrying a firm will. 27
- Often wears a ZAFT red pilot uniform while deployed. 137
- Pilots the deep-crimson Justice Gundam after losing the Aegis. 179
Personality
Athrun is thoughtful, courteous, and inclined to consider consequences others dismiss. During the Heliopolis operation, he questions whether seizing Orb-linked mobile suits could trigger a diplomatic incident, placing him at odds with Yzak and Dearka's more aggressive attitudes. 23
His strongest conflict is between duty to ZAFT and his personal bonds. He repeatedly hesitates to fight Kira Yamato, first attempting to bring him back to ZAFT rather than destroy him, then later becoming consumed by guilt and rage after Michel's death. 52 164
Although capable of ruthless resolve in battle, Athrun ultimately recognizes that he has been judging Kira, Lacus, and Ino from his own perspective rather than truly understanding them. This realization drives him to seek his own definition of justice rather than simply obey orders. 179
Abilities & Skills
Mobile Suit Piloting
Athrun is one of ZAFT's foremost mobile-suit pilots, credited with graduating first from his military academy class and regarded alongside Kira and Ino as one of the strongest known pilots. 212
- Can suppress Yzak in close combat and Dearka at range when fighting at full strength. 53
- Uses a rapid three-point ranged lock-on before accelerating into decisive close-quarters attacks. 81
- Heavily damages Kira's Strike Gundam in a one-on-one battle. 212
- Demonstrates exceptional control of the transformable Aegis Gundam in both Mobile Suit and Mobile Armor modes. 51 80
Close-Quarters Combat
Outside a cockpit, Athrun is an elite melee combatant.
- One of the few academy cadets able to defeat instructor Blade Fred in a head-on weapon duel. 27
- Disarms and subdues Cagalli after surviving a transport-plane attack and crash. 137
- His hesitation to kill Cagalli after overpowering her reflects his growing discomfort with killing outside immediate combat necessity. 137
Field Leadership
Athrun routinely directs small-team operations despite the difficult personalities within his unit.
- Assigns Nicol and Yzak to secure three mobile suits while leading Rusty during the Morgenroete infiltration. 26
- Encourages Nicol when his teammate becomes nervous before combat. 26
- Relies on Yzak's abilities during the Orb search rather than forcing obedience through rank. 151
- Arrives to support Ino and Shiho during an Orb ambush. 154
Mobile Suits & Equipment
GAT-X303 Aegis Gundam — Athrun's primary machine through the Heliopolis and Earth campaigns. Its transformable Mobile Armor form uses mechanical claws to seize enemy units and mounts the 580mm Scylla Multi-Phase Energy Cannon. 51
- Uses the Aegis to shield and capture Kira's Strike Gundam rather than allow Yzak to destroy it. 51 52
- Destroys multiple Mobile Armors and an escort ship during his resolved assault on the Archangel's forces. 80
- Activates its self-destruct sequence after its battle with Kira leaves both machines heavily damaged. 164
ZGMF-X09A Justice Gundam — Athrun's successor unit after the Aegis's destruction. 179
Haros — Athrun gifts Lacus several Haro robots and had previously repaired one during an early visit to her home. 125
Relationships
- Kira Yamato — Childhood friend from the Lunar Childhood School and fellow Coordinator. Their reunion places them on opposing sides of the war; Athrun tries to capture Kira rather than kill him, later fights him with deadly intent, and eventually saves him in Orb. 45 52 164 195
- Lacus Clyne — Arranged fiancée. Their relationship is polite and caring but strained by political expectations, Athrun's guilt, and Lacus's eventual break with the Zala regime. 19 125 178
- Patrick Zala — Father. Patrick treats Athrun primarily as a soldier and places immense expectations on him, creating a distant and painful father-son relationship. 67 177 212
- Lenore Zala — Mother, killed in Bloody Valentine. Her death remains central to Athrun's reasons for fighting and his hatred of war. 72
- Nicol Amalfi — Teammate and one of Athrun's most steadfast supporters. Athrun encourages Nicol before combat, while Nicol later tries unsuccessfully to mediate the conflict between Athrun and the other pilots. 26 55
- Yzak Joule — Fellow F4 member and frequent critic. Yzak resents Athrun's hesitation and physically assaults him after the failed Strike operation, though Athrun continues to acknowledge Yzak's ability. 55 151
- Dearka Elsman — Fellow F4 member whose mocking attitude often aggravates Athrun's conflicts with the team. 23 55
- Ino Kamal — Academy acquaintance and later battlefield comrade. Ino knows Athrun's strengths from repeated sparring and eventually fights beside him while encouraging Athrun to find his own answers. 53 154 177
- Cagalli — Initially meets Athrun as an enemy after both crash on an uninhabited island. Their hostile encounter becomes an important challenge to Athrun's assumptions about enemies and justice. 137 195
- Michel Aiman — Teammate whose death becomes a major source of Athrun's guilt and pushes him into his most violent confrontation with Kira. 164
Story Role / Major Arcs
Heliopolis Operation
Athrun participates in ZAFT's operation to seize the Earth Alliance's G-series mobile suits at Heliopolis. He leads parts of the infiltration, worries about the diplomatic consequences of attacking Orb-related facilities, and discovers that the Strike Gundam's pilot is Kira, his childhood friend. 23 26 27 45
During the following battles, Athrun protects Kira from Yzak's attack by wrapping the Aegis around the Strike. He then attempts to take Kira back to ZAFT, believing Kira should not remain with the Earth Alliance, but Ino and Mu La Flaga prevent the capture. 51 52
Resolve and Conflict with Kira
After returning to PLANT, Athrun visits Lenore's grave and resolves to fight for what he wishes to protect. He subsequently devastates enemy Mobile Armors and an escort ship with the Aegis, then engages Kira directly while trying to destroy the Archangel. 72 80 81
The death of Michel shatters Athrun's remaining restraint. Believing his hesitation caused Michel's death, he fights Kira with the intention of killing him, eventually activating the Aegis's self-destruct sequence after their machines are critically damaged. 164 166
Break with Patrick Zala's Orders
After Patrick labels Lacus and Siegel Clyne traitors, Athrun struggles to reconcile the accusation with the people he knows. He visits the devastated Clyne residence, finds Lacus at an abandoned opera house, and ultimately lets her go rather than carrying out the regime's will. 177 178 179
Athrun receives the Justice Gundam and launches to find his own path. When he encounters Kira's Freedom Gundam under attack at Orb, he defies his mission to recover or destroy Freedom and intervenes to save Kira. 179 195
Final War
Athrun later confronts Patrick directly after recognizing how far his father's ideology has moved toward endless conflict. By the defense of PLANT, he launches with Kira and Lacus to intercept the Earth Alliance's nuclear missiles. 212 221
