Background / History
Kira was raised by Caridad Yamato after his biological parents, Ulen Hibiki and his wife, died at Mendel Laboratory. Ulen, a leading genetic researcher, created Kira as the strongest Coordinator of the Cosmic Era. 155
At sixteen, Kira lived as a civilian on neutral Heliopolis and had no prior battlefield experience. When ZAFT infiltrated the colony to seize the Earth Alliance’s new Mobile Suits, he protected Lacus Clyne during the attack and was pushed into the cockpit of the X105 Strike Gundam by Murrue Ramius. There, he discovered that childhood friend Athrun Zala had become a ZAFT soldier. 27 43
After Heliopolis collapsed, Kira was left adrift amid the remains of his home before regaining his composure and returning to the Archangel. His status as a Coordinator was soon exposed to Alliance personnel, drawing hostility from soldiers but support from Tolle and Murrue. 36 38
Though Kira repeatedly insisted that he was a civilian who hated war, he accepted the Strike’s role because the Archangel, its refugees, and his friends could not otherwise survive. His early battles were defined by fear of killing, guilt over the lives inside enemy machines, and anguish over fighting Athrun. 43 46
Kira’s outlook hardened after successive conflicts with Ino and Athrun. Following Captain Flaga’s presumed death, he pursued Ino in fury; their confrontation forced him to acknowledge that battle required fighting to protect the people he cared about, even while he remained deeply troubled by taking lives. 162 163
He later operated the Freedom Gundam during Orb’s defense, fighting alongside Athrun and Ino against the Earth Alliance’s enhanced Mobile Suits. By the final battles, Kira and Athrun deployed together to intercept nuclear missiles aimed at PLANT. 196 221 222
Personality
Kira initially seeks an ordinary, peaceful life and reacts strongly to being treated as a weapon because of his Coordinator abilities. The thought of killing other people to survive leaves him fearful, angry, and guilt-ridden. 43 46
He is compassionate even toward enemies: he worries about Lacus becoming a political bargaining chip, is relieved that a captured ZAFT soldier will not be harmed, and pursues Eno during the retreat from Orb out of concern for his safety. 38 79 197
Combat and loss gradually make him more decisive. He comes to reject hesitation when it endangers those he wants to protect, but this resolve can become uncontrolled rage, particularly in his battles with Ino and Athrun. 112 163 164
