Background / History

Crocodile operated from a temporary Baroque Works office while pursuing Pluton. He regarded the Ancient Weapon as leverage sufficient to make the World Government fear him and began seeking someone able to translate Ancient Text 11.

After learning that Alabasta contained information related to Pluton, he entered the kingdom under the protection of his Shichibukai status. He built public support by eliminating nearby pirates, intending to marginalize the royal family, seize Alabasta, and claim Pluton for himself 82. He also used the kingdom's crisis involving the Golden Lion as an opportunity to gain King Cobra's trust 82.

Crocodile's plan was disrupted by Linley Barek, whose motives he could neither determine nor manipulate. Their first meeting escalated from a hostile handshake into a desert duel, but neither combatant could secure victory; they agreed to a temporary ceasefire while the Golden Lion remained a threat 76 77 82.

During the Alabasta conflict, Crocodile fought alongside Linley against the Golden Lion when their interests aligned. He later infiltrated the Flying Pirates' floating island, stole Pluton intelligence, and used Desert Spindrift to turn part of the falling island into sand, preventing its crash and preserving the document 89 105.

Crocodile subsequently formed a temporary alliance with Linley to investigate Water 7 for Pluton's blueprint. He acquired half of the blueprint, publicly submitted a copy to the World Government as protection, and retained his position as a Shichibukai 123 153 156. Because the annotations were written in Ancient Text, he sought an archaeologist to interpret the incomplete design 171.

After cooperating with Linley, Fisher Tiger, Aiden Cedia, and others against Doflamingo, Crocodile obtained the Gold-Gold Fruit and gave it to Tesoro. He then spent eight years researching and constructing the Little Pluton from half of Pluton's blueprint 239 259.

Personality

Crocodile is ambitious, calculating, and intensely self-assured. He treats his Shichibukai title as a tool rather than an end goal, using its legal protection to pursue Pluton and, ultimately, the position of Pirate King 76 173.

He favors preparation, intelligence gathering, misdirection, and exploiting others' motives. He is patient enough to build influence gradually, but becomes openly ruthless when obstacles threaten his objectives 82 90 208. He views many allies as disposable pawns, though repeated encounters with Linley force him to recognize strength that cannot be easily manipulated 90 190.

Crocodile is contemptuous of opponents he considers weak or unworthy. He rejected Doflamingo's proposed alliance as humiliating, regarding the Donquixote Family as beneath him 185. Despite this arrogance, he can reassess a situation pragmatically, such as refusing to continue fighting Linley after recognizing his growth 172.

He forms an alliance with Linley to search Water 7 for Pluton's blueprint. While fighting Moria's zombies and evading Marine scrutiny, Crocodile secures half of the blueprint and turns its public submission into political cover 123 125 153 156.

Fish-Man Island and the Doflamingo Hunt

Unable to decipher the blueprint's Ancient Text, Crocodile travels to Fish-Man Island. Linley recruits him to pursue Doflamingo, and Crocodile joins Aiden and Fisher Tiger in operations involving the Golden Cloud, Punk Hazard, and Dressrosa 171 172 189 228.

Dressrosa Conflict

Crocodile rejects Doflamingo's alliance, defeats Donquixote Family forces, battles Doflamingo directly, and leaves him alive as bait. He also gives Tesoro the Gold-Gold Fruit and begins preparing for the coming era 185 235 238 239.

Little Pluton and Marineford

After eight years of secrecy and construction, Crocodile returns aboard the Little Pluton, a weaponized ship built from half of Pluton's blueprint. He arrives at Marineford and departs with Linley and their companions to continue exploring the world 259 287.
