Background / History

Celestial Dragon upbringing

Doflamingo was born into the Donquixote Family, a Celestial Dragon household that had lived in Mary Geoise for generations. His father, Donquixote Homing, renounced their privileges and relocated the family to live as commoners. Rather than accepting them, ordinary people persecuted Doflamingo, Homing, and Doflamingo's younger brother Rosinante for the crimes of the Celestial Dragons. Their mother later died from illness amid the family's poverty. 178

At age ten, Doflamingo blamed Homing for their suffering and shot him despite Rosinante's pleas. He returned to Mary Geoise carrying his father's head, only for the Celestial Dragons to reject him as the child of a traitorous family. Cast out again, Doflamingo vowed to overturn the world ruled by the Celestial Dragons. 178

After leaving Mary Geoise, he met Trebol, Pica, Diamante, and Vergo. The four recognized his potential for Conqueror's Haki and gave him the Ito Ito no Mi, establishing the foundation of the Donquixote Family. 178

Rise as JOKER

Doflamingo built the Donquixote Family into an underworld force while using its members as tightly controlled assets. He dispatched Vergo, the first Corazon, to infiltrate the Marines, while Rosinante became the second Corazon and Trafalgar Law was brought into the family. 178 235

Seeking the World Government's recognition as a Shichibukai, Doflamingo arranged for Vergo to collect evidence of cooperation between Celestial Dragons and pirates in an assassination plot against Linley Barek. He intended to use the resulting scandal as leverage against the World Government. 33 34

Conflict with Linley Barek

After Linley declared war on the Celestial Dragons, Doflamingo initially regarded him as an amusing fool and ordered Trebol to monitor him. As Linley's actions escalated, however, Doflamingo reassessed him as a dangerous, strategically capable opponent whose objective was a direct battle with him. 11 179

Doflamingo used the Golden Cloud as bait to draw Linley's group toward Punk Hazard, working with World Government agents and Caesar Clown while preparing layered defenses. He personally intervened when his subordinates could not delay Linley's approach. 186 188 195

On Punk Hazard, Doflamingo deployed thread puppets, the Birdcage, a second Birdcage, and Caesar's lethal stimulant gas. His prolonged battle with Linley pushed both fighters into a self-repairing, stimulant-fueled struggle, but Linley's Great Extinction ultimately overwhelmed him. Doflamingo escaped the island through Sky Walk while severely injured. 192 195 205 207 211

Dressrosa defeat and imprisonment

After retreating to Dressrosa, Doflamingo regrouped his remaining combatants, arranged emergency care for Sugar and Trebol, and assigned Diamante, Pica, and his thread clones to divide Linley's allies. 232

He later attempted to form a pirate alliance with Crocodile, but their meeting immediately devolved into battle. The wider conflict ended with Vice Admiral Tsuru's arrival and the arrest of Doflamingo and the Donquixote Family. 235 242

Doflamingo's plan to become a Shichibukai was thwarted; eight years later, he remained imprisoned in Impel Down, carrying numerous crimes assigned to him by the World Government. 244

Appearance

Doflamingo is a tall blond man known for his flamboyant clothing and red sunglasses. He wears a pink feathered cloak; during the Punk Hazard conflict, he wore a tailored black suit beneath it. 11 190

  • Pink feathered cloak.
  • Exaggerated red sunglasses.
  • Blond hair.
  • Tailored black suit beneath his cloak during the Punk Hazard operation. 190

Personality

Doflamingo presents violence, political maneuvering, and personal conflict as a game. He laughs at threats, responds to provocation with excitement, and treats the World Government's Shichibukai system as an irony to exploit rather than an institution to respect. 11 33 57

He is calculating and adaptable, gathering intelligence, manipulating multiple factions, and preparing backup plans when direct plans fail. He recognizes strength in opponents such as Linley and adjusts his approach rather than dismissing danger outright. 179 181 206

Doflamingo also demands control. He sees himself as the “King” of the Donquixote Family and expects even relatives and senior executives to remain within his authority. Despite this possessiveness, he regards the family as central to his ambitions and attempted to retrieve his injured executives during his escape from Punk Hazard. 209 211 235

Abilities & Skills

Ito Ito no Mi

Doflamingo wields the Paramecia-type Ito Ito no Mi, which allows him to create and manipulate exceptionally fine threads. His intensive development of the fruit is stated to have reached awakening. 178 204

  • Produces cutting threads capable of killing large numbers of prisoners in a surprise attack. 190
  • Uses strings offensively at close range, including the crimson-thread technique Over-Whip. 206
  • Can stitch damaged blood vessels, skin, muscles, and bones with thread to keep fighting. 205
  • His strings provide temporary repair rather than true recovery; fractures and internal injuries still require time to heal. 211
  • As a Paramecia user, he remains vulnerable to physical collision damage. 204

Shadow Rider Thread

Shadow Rider Thread creates humanoid thread puppets that resemble Doflamingo closely enough to mislead opponents.

  • Puppets can speak and perform Doflamingo's techniques. 192
  • At least five apparent “Doflamingos” were used to place traps and execute coordinated attacks around Punk Hazard. 191 192
  • A damaged puppet can be dispersed back into threads and replaced. 195

Birdcage

Doflamingo can convert the threads of Shadow Rider puppets into a massive enclosing cage.

  • The Birdcage surrounds an entire island and contracts, slicing through trees, rock, and ground in its path. 192
  • He used it to isolate Linley from his allies and force a negotiation from a position of control. 192
  • He later created a second Birdcage to prevent the Golden Cloud from escaping Punk Hazard. 195
  • Maintaining two Birdcages at once visibly exhausts him. 196
  • Linley's offensive-focused Armament Haki was capable of breaking its threads. 193

Sky Walk

Doflamingo uses threads attached to clouds as footholds, allowing rapid aerial movement.

  • Can travel at high speed through the air by pulling himself across near-invisible thread connections. 188
  • Allowed him to flee Punk Hazard despite losing access to a ship. 211
  • Requires cloud or similar anchor points and cannot carry substantial weight, preventing him from evacuating multiple injured executives. 211

Observation Haki

Doflamingo uses Observation Haki to sense attacks that approach from outside his direct field of vision.

  • Detected Linley's blind-spot assaults within the poison-filled Punk Hazard institute. 202
  • Relied on it defensively when Linley's speed exceeded what he could follow visually. 202

Relationships

  • Trebol — Elder, mentor, and supreme commander of the Special Ability Division; Trebol is fiercely loyal and helped guide Doflamingo to his position. 179
  • Vergo — Highest executive and first Corazon; Doflamingo ordered him to infiltrate the Marines and gather leverage against the World Government. 34 178
  • Donquixote Rosinante — Younger brother and second Corazon; unbeknownst to Doflamingo, Rosinante secretly joined the Marines to obstruct the family's activities. 178
  • Linley Barek — Primary adversary whose investigation, pursuit, and battle dismantled Doflamingo's plans at Punk Hazard and Dressrosa. 179 207 242
  • Crocodile — A powerful, untrustworthy figure Doflamingo repeatedly sought to recruit into a pirate alliance; their negotiations culminated in open conflict. 235 238
  • Caesar Clown — Research partner who provided the lethal stimulant gas used in Doflamingo's Punk Hazard trap. 195
  • Kaido — Partner in Doflamingo's planned Artificial Devil Fruit enterprise; Doflamingo contacted him as a final contingency when defeat became imminent. 256 257
  • Vice Admiral Tsuru — Longtime pursuer who led the Marines in arresting Doflamingo and his family in Dressrosa. 173 242
