Background

Madara was once the central figure behind the Moon Eye Plan, believing the altered Naka Shrine stone tablet and Black Zetsu’s claim that the Infinite Tsukuyomi could bring peace. By the time Black Zetsu reported Tobirama Uchiha’s rise, Madara was an aged, frail man sustained by tubes connected to the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path. Rather than viewing Tobirama as an immediate threat, he considered the young Uchiha a possible pawn to be guided toward the Infinite Tsukuyomi. 34

Tobirama captured Black Zetsu and confronted Madara in his underground lair. He revealed that the tablet had been falsified, that the Moon Eye Plan would revive Kaguya and convert humanity into White Zetsu, and that Madara himself had been cultivated as a pawn. 55 Using Soul Sever, Tobirama extracted Black Zetsu’s millennia of memories and allowed Madara to witness the manipulation directly. Madara learned that Black Zetsu had altered the tablet, guided his acquisition of Hashirama’s cells, and used Obito and Nagato as links in Kaguya’s resurrection scheme. 56

With his lifelong ideal destroyed, Madara initially accepted death. Tobirama instead offered him a place in a shinobi-led world without feudal lords or nobles, then restored his body to its youthful peak. Madara refused to submit solely out of gratitude and challenged Tobirama to prove his right to command him. 56

Appearance

Madara first appears as a shriveled elderly man tethered to the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path by life-sustaining tubes. After Tobirama restores him, he returns to the appearance and physical condition of an eighteen-year-old warrior. 55 56

  • Long black hair and a youthful, muscular physique after rejuvenation. 56
  • Commonly wears layered dark-red battle armor. 58 59
  • Possesses purple, ripple-patterned Rinnegan after reclaiming his original eyes. 58
  • Carries an oppressive chakra presence capable of making ordinary jōnin kneel. 59

Personality

Madara is intensely proud and recognizes strength as the only legitimate basis for authority. Even after Tobirama restores his life, he insists on a battle before offering allegiance, declaring that only the strong are worthy to command him. 56 His final loyalty to Tobirama is therefore based on personal conviction after witnessing an insurmountable gap in power, not coercion alone. 57

He is battle-hungry, dismissive of weaker opponents, and quickly bored by resistance that cannot challenge him. He initially enjoys discovering unfamiliar powers such as Haki, but abandons interest once he judges an opponent inadequate. 155 As Tobirama’s war minister, he embraces his role as an instrument of intimidation and conquest, often treating foreign opposition as beneath notice. 59 65

Madara’s old conviction in the Infinite Tsukuyomi collapses completely when Black Zetsu’s memories expose it as a fraud. The revelation leaves him devastated, but Tobirama’s offer of a new world order gives him a purpose beyond the plan that consumed his former life. 56

Abilities & Skills

Rinnegan

After reclaiming his eyes from Nagato, Madara regains his original Rinnegan and his complete combat form. 58

  • Uses the Preta Path to absorb Whitebeard’s Devil Fruit-based attacks. 164
  • Manifests Truth-Seeking Orbs that withstand powerful coordinated attacks and extinguish abilities on contact. 165
  • Wields enough ocular pressure to terrify high-level opponents through presence alone. 58 59

Susanoo

Madara can form and pilot a blue Perfect Susanoo, using it for aerial combat, large-scale destruction, and defense. 155

  • A single Susanoo sword slash destroys Vegapunk’s laser barrage and breaches the Red Line’s defensive rock face. 155
  • His Susanoo withstands a direct Haki-enhanced strike from Rocks D. Xebec, though the impact produces a visible crack. 155
  • Coats Hashirama’s Sage Art: True Several Thousand Hands with Majestic Attire Susanoo, creating the Six Paths: Majestic Attire True Several Thousand Hands. 155

Wood Release

Madara can use Wood Release in direct combat. 57

  • Forms the Wood Human Technique during his duel with Tobirama. 57
  • Combines Wood Release with Susanoo-based techniques alongside Hashirama at Six Paths tier. 155

Taijutsu and Combat Instinct

Madara is a close-combat specialist who willingly dismisses defenses to fight opponents directly when their strength interests him. 155

  • Trades hand-to-hand attacks with Rocks after recognizing the power of Haki. 155
  • Overpowers the Whitebeard Pirates through chakra-enhanced strikes, shattering Jozu’s diamond defense and incapacitating Marco. 165
  • Fights with enough speed that elite opponents appear slow under his Rinnegan’s perception. 165

Karma State

Madara can activate a Karma state to increase his power when ordinary physical combat is insufficient. 164

  • Uses it against Whitebeard after being pressured in raw physical strength. 164
  • Follows it by employing the Rinnegan and Perfect Susanoo. 164

  • Truth-Seeking Orbs — Black spheres used for defense and offense. 165

Relationships

  • Black Zetsu — Madara trusted him as the manifestation of his own will until Black Zetsu’s memories revealed that he had manipulated Madara’s life and Moon Eye Plan for Kaguya’s resurrection. 55 56
  • Hashirama Senju — His longtime rival and closest friend. Madara reacts with overwhelming joy upon Hashirama’s reincarnation, and the two later fight as coordinated partners. 70 155
  • Tobirama Senju — Openly hostile toward Madara and distrustful of the Uchiha; their old antagonism resumes immediately upon Tobirama Senju’s reincarnation. 68 70
  • Nagato — Madara’s Rinnegan had been transplanted into Nagato. Tobirama removes the eyes and returns them to Madara, giving Nagato ordinary eyes in exchange. 58
  • Whitebeard — A foreign-world opponent Madara challenges over the title of “strongest man”; Madara eventually kills him and takes the Tremor-Tremor Fruit. 164
